New York-fUPD-Jim Brown of the Cleveland Browns, pos sibly the most powerful run ner in National Football league history, today was named the professional cir cuit's "Player of the Year" for 1958 in the annual United Press Internationzl poll. The other vote went to Del Shofner, speedy offensive end for the Los Angeles Rams During the past season Brown shattered the oldNFL rushing mark of 1,146 yards set by Steve Van Buren jf the Philadelphia Eagles in 1949 by 391 yards. Brown carried the ball 257 times in J958, averaging 127 yards per game and 5.9 per carry. His 18 touchdowns tied the season record set by Van Buren in 1945. Forest Service Man Will Talk To Waltonians Howard G. Hopkins, Rogue River National forest timber management staff assistant, will be speaker on Monday, Jan. 12, at the meeting of the Jackson County chapter of the Izaak Walton league. Hopkins, giving an illus trated talk, will discuss the importance of the forest to Oregon, current management and the future outlook. The meeting will be at 8 pxtt. at Girls Community club Fishing regulations will be discussed by Waltonians with a view toward making rec ommendations to the Oregon state game commission. Matters include the opening date of trout season in the Rogue River and its; tributar ies and the possibility of changing from six to eight inches the size of trout caught from Rogue River that anglers may legally keep. Limit in the coast zone already is eight inches. Aim is to protect young steelhead trout which migrate to the ocean when they are-about 7Vi inches long. - Information from the Army Engineers on the Rogue Ba sin study will be available. It will show the effects of amendments of the Coordin ation Act that were made in to law by the last Congress. The legislation has been pro claimed the most important for conservation in 25 years. The public is invited to the Monday meeting. There will be refreshments. Seas Subsiding Along East Coast By United Press International Seas slowly subsided along the Atlantic Seaboard today, marking the expiring gasp of a week-long weather on slaught that flailed the nation from coast to coast- Mild seasonal weather re placed the wintry extremes that saw heavy rams along the West Coast, sub-zero tem peratures throughout the Plains and Midwest, and an icy gale off the New England coast. At the gale's peak at least four ships had been disabled in the Atlantic. But reports from the Boston Coast Guard today said the only vessel still in trouble was the 110-foot fishing trawler Lillian B., 140 miles off Cape Cod. Across the border in Can ada, hundreds of travelers and families were stranded by mammoth snows swept into huge drifts by , freezing winds. ' Weather blamed deaths, of which at least 68 were caused by fires, came to at least 96 in the past week. Delegates Divided On Proposed Bill Gearhart -flJPD- Delegates to the 65th annual meeting of the Oregon Dairymen's as sociation today appeared di vided on a proposed bill to change the method of appoint ing the state agriculture direc tor. The bill, by Sen. Walter Leth (R-Salem), would give authority for appointment of the agriculture director to the State Board of Agriculture. The governor now holds the authority. Also discussed at the open ing meeting Wednesday was a bill which would put meat inspection under a veterinar ian and separate it from the animal industry division. A bounty of $3 is paid for a fox killed in New Jersey. Waterborne Traffic Falls to Low Point Portland -UPD- Waterborne traffic fell to its lowest point in 20 years at Willamette Falls locks during 1958. But at the same time water borne traffic through Bonne ville and The Dalles dams reached new highs. Last year, 161 Americans over 100 years of age were receiving social security checks. Bayonne, N.J.-(tJPl)-A general-alarm fire raged out of control for almost four hours Wednesday night in the heart of the business district. Mere than 150 firemen battled the fire before it was brought un der control and scores of resi dents were forced to leave their apartments. Six stores were damaged and two fire men injured. . . , Musser Elevated To Commissioner Salem-fllPD-V. Dean Musser, 43, was elevated to insurance commissioner today by Gov. elect Mark Hatfield. He has been chief deputy insurance commissioner for four years. Musser succeeds Hugh Earle who resigned orally this week. . He will take office Jan. 11. Formerly, Musser was ath letic coach in Idaho and a graduate of Idaho State. He had seven years experience in the insurance business be fore joining the State Insur ance Department. The insurance commission er is also state fire marshal by law. "Dean Musser's famifiarity with the department, its budget, and the need to con' tinue a sound program of reg ulation and education in the public interest have caused me to choose a man who has chosen government as a career," Hatfield said. Sears Employees May Be Organized San Francisco-flJPlHOfficials of the Western Conference of Teamsters will meet here next Tuesday to formulate plans tor organizing nonunion em ployees of Sears Roebuck and company stores. The conference said those attending will include Mur ray W.. Miller, Dallas, inter national vice president and coordinator of the organizing drive. - Teamster President James Hoffa has estimated that Sears stores in 21 states and Canada have a potential of 70,000 ad ditional union members. The fourth largest of the 48 states, New Mexico, has only 155 square miles of surface water. Experimentation On Salmon Starts Portland-fUPD-The' Bureau of Commercial Fisheries said Wednesday it was launching a new phase of experimenta tion in rearing salmon under controlled but natural condi tions. The bureau today is releas ing 25,000 spring chinook fry into the Happy Valley reser voir north of Madras in the Warm Springs Indian reser vation. Later, it will dump an equal number of silver sal mon in the same waters. A bureau biologist said the purpose of the experiment is to compare productivity re sults under hatchery condi tions with those in a natural habitat. The biologist said the proj ect is the first fishery man agement effort to rear salmon under hatchery conditions with no control over water temperatures, flow or feeding. Initial results are expected in about a year, he said. Morgan Named Defendant in Suit Salem-tCPD-West Coast Tele phone company Wednesday named Public Utility Commis sioner Howard Morgan as. de fendant in a Marion county Circuit Court complaint at tacking a Dee. 12 PUC order which limited exchange-rate increases to less than half the figure requested by the utility. West Coast said that the $250,543 increase granted de nied the company a reason able return on its Oregon investment. The company said lack of the full increase deprived it of its property "without due process of law, contrary to the 14th amendment of the constitution of the United States." . ( The complaint said that 23 findings in Morgan's order were not supported by evi dence. Lengthy proceedings were conducted on the rate hike at North Bend, Milwaukie, La Grande and Salem. Escape Artist on Most Wanted List Portland (CPD Youthful escape artist, David Lynn Thurston, Portland, has been placed on the FBI's list of 10 most wanted fugitives. Thurston last April escaped from the Multnomah county courthouse while being escort ed on a cham by police. He used a homemade key to un lock a handcuff. The FBI said Thurston "may be armed and should be con sidered extremely dangerous." Thurston was arrested last February on a charge of par ticipating in the armed rob bery of a grocery in Portland He is described as about 5 feet 8V2 inches tall weighing 135 to 145 pounds with brown hair, hazel eyes and a fair complexion. He has a IVi-inch scar under his left eyebrow. The FBI said he may be working on a ranch in Idaho or Montana. Thurston had ex pressed such an intention be fore his escape. Cattle Rancher Named To Soil Committee Salem -(UP&- Merritt Parks, Lake county cattle rancher, was appointed to the State Soil Conservation Committee by Gov. Robert D. Holmes Wednesday. Parks, of Fort Rock, suc ceeds Leroy Geinger, Chilo quin, who resigned because of the press of private business. Also announced was the appointment of Dr. S. E. Mc Gough, partner in the Pen dleton veterinary clinic, to the State Board of Livestock Auction Markets. McGough succeeds Dr. R. L. Lewis, Redmond. 3.
