So often the Dr. Alvare doctor con cerned feels that he just hasn't the time to stop and talk to the parents. He sees no need for telling them why certain things are planned, or being done, or he sees no need for giving them hope, or explain ing in simple English what was found and what is wrong. Perhaps he thinks he hasn't the time; but he should find the time and take the time. I never have had any diffi culty in finding time in which to answer the questions of patients. Often the taking of one minute to explain some thing makes the difference between having on one's hands an angry family or a very grateful one. We doctors have never, been noted for having any sense when it comes to maintaining good public re lations in our offices and clinics and hospitals. A few of us doctors get the "God Complex," which is very sad. I often marvel that even in books on psychiatry there is rarely even a short section on the very difficult ar;t of handling mentally disturbed persons who are perhaps diffi cult, hostile, or frightened. I have spent much of my life trying to learn how to handle such people and still I often don't know how to do it suc cessfully. I have searched textbooks for chapters on the subject, but rarely have found much to help me. Early this year a little book called, "Peggy," written in France by an outraged and angry mother, Micheline Vernhes, became in a few days a best seller. Mrs. Vernhes' description of the stupidity and heartlessness and lack of any consideration for the feel ings of the . parents of her dying child in a hospital bed made such a stir that even a bumbling bureaucracy felt compelled to do something to improve matters. A Dr. Leclainche decreed that in at- least seven of the hospitals of Paris parents of a very sick and possibly dying child may stay with him around the clock. The chil dren may have with them in bed some of their own be loved belongings. , and even their own pet nightgown. A waiting-room has been sup plied for parents whose chil dren are to be operated on, and plans have been made for having a hostess present. I have heard that m one of the Children's Hospitals in this country in which a host Help Available On Tax Returns Special help in filling out state income tax returns will be offered again this year in the Medford area by repre sentatives of the state tax commission, according to O. D. Binegar, field auditor for the commission. Assistance will be available almost every Monday in the Medford office, Room 320, Leverette building, Binegar said. Dates the office will be open are Jan. 12, 19, 26; Feb. 2, 9, 16 and 23; March 9, 16 and April 1 through 15. Hours will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dates for other places in Jackson and Josephine coun ties, scheduled for March, will be announced later. It is requested that those needing help or having ques tions, bring all necessary in formation pertaining to total income for 1958. Also, it is requested that copies of 1957 state anc federal tax returns be made available. Anyone paying additional federal in come taxes during 1958 must be able to state date and amount of each payment made.
