larly was to see that this
room is presided over by a
fine, sensible and friendly
woman who serves as a host
ess and a comforter. When
one of her guests gets very
anxious, she goes to the' door
of the operating-room, and
returns perhaps to say that all
is going well.
Instead of the relative of a
patient sitting anxiously alone
in a cheerless room, as is the
custom in most hospitals, here
he or she sits in a cheery
place with others, all drawn
together by a common anx
iety. Those who wish can chat;
others can read the current
magazines that are supplied.
In the room there is a kitchen
ette from which the hostess,
from time to time, serves cof
fee or tea, with cookies.
The wonderful feature of
this room is that the hostess
does not let the waiting ones
feel that they are . alone, de
serted, and unable to find out
what is happening to their
loved ones.

For many years I have been
suggesting to the managers of
hospitals and clinics that they
have several kindly hostesses
around the place, but they
never showed any interest.
As one manager said to me,
"Do you mean to infer that
we need an intermediary be
tween our doctors and nurses
and our patients?" And I said,
"I most certainly do." .
Just as I was standing there,
I heard a man come up to ask
if he could see the eye spe
cialist; he said ha had just
gone blind in one eye and
was afraid the other eye was
going bad.- The girl consulted
an appointment book and told
him he could be seen in 10
days. When the man protested
that by then he might be com
pletely blind, she shrugged
her shoulders and inferred
that that was "his funeral,"
not hers.
I overheard another man,
while paying his bill, say he
had gotten nothing for his
money! He liad traveled far
to consult a certain disting
uished specialist, but had been
seen, instead, by a young man
who, inferring that he was as
good as the specialist, refused
to call "him, even in consul
tation. As I . said, "Of course,
you 'need : a good hostess
around here. She could save
you many thousands of dol
lars a year." ,
