NEALON Table Rock - The recent community Christmas tree and program proved to be one of the most interesting witnessed here for some time. The varied program . con sisted of appropriate songs, a puppet show, instrumental music, an exercise by three girls and tape recordings of conversation and singing in the homes about the commu nity. . This feature was arranged by Dan Matteson, which sur prised many who had never heard their own voices played "back, from the. tape. Santa Claus had been prodded a little by David Doran, but arrived in time to learn that nearly all the small fry had been extra good. He embar rassed some of the old fry by criticizing their behavior and then asking them to get up and defend themselves. : The usual treats, including Mrs. Myers' famous popcorn balls, were distributed to all. , The David Doran family of Medford, former residents here, were present. Dave, the barber, was adorned with his promising centennial beard. Also present was Bud Robin son, the only man in the com munity who can afford a mustache. We thought he gazed on David's silken beard with a little gleam of envy in his eye. Norman Matteson, pharma ceutical salesman for the Boyle co., is now operating a small car of foreign manu facture, which he says he likes very much, and believes will save him a lot on gas expense. ' The local Sunday School put on an appropriate Christ mas program after classes last Sunday, with each class taking part. At next Sunday's meeting, officers for 1959 will be elected. Billy Ryan, a student at OSC is spending the holidays with home folks. Mr. and Mrs. Orville Ham ilton and son, Ernest, were Christmas day visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Gregory at Winston. Ore. Mrs. Gregory is Mrs. Hamil ton's mother. . Also visiting at the Greg ory home the same day were Dr. R. S. Russ and family of Ely, Nev., who also spent sev eral days at the Hamilton home. Mrs. Russ and Mrs. Hamilton are sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Nelson, accompanied by the Carl Neidermeyers of West Side, were Christmas dinner guests at the Jack Nelson home in Winston, Ore. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Nelson were New Year's day guests with Jack's parents at the Guy Nelson home here. . The Elmo Stallings family and Mr. R. H. Seegmiller were dinner guests Christmas day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Trimble near Tal ent. Mr. and Mrs. Abe Halfhfll and Jerry are spending a few days with son, Clyde, who is in an Air Force training camp in southern California. Mrs. Hildreth Wheeler of Medford was a dinner guest at the home of her son, Don Wheeler, Christmas day. Oth er relatives at the Wheeler home the same day were Mr. and Mrs. Milo Hardin and son, Jonaie, Mr. and Mrs. Carys Taber, and daughter, Jean, of Medford and Mrs. John Dickey. - Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ellis came out of their Beagle "hide out" recently and were brief callers. Mrs. Ellis brought us a table squash grown on dry land, which she defied us to beat with any w grow with irrigation. We admit it was of fine flavor and texture, and extra good for that variety, but we like our sweet meat variety better for all purposes. Some 50 members of the Bigham clan, gathered at the Everett Brown home Christ mas morning.' Starting with a Christmas tree and presents and followed by a bountiful dinner about midday, the group played and viewed old photographs in the afternoon. There were three new members present, Mrs. Bill Bigham, Mrs. Dale Bigham and Mrs. Kenneth Bigham. Larry Bigham came from Ari zona where he is in an Air Force training camp. Mrs. Gladys Shulz recently spent a two weeks' vacation with her mother in Pasadena, Calif- She reports that the smog there during her stay was very irritating. The 50-years-ago bride in our story about the golden wedding anniversary was a little .peeved in, that she thought we intimated that the Wilsons seldom, if ever wore dress clothes, and she gave me to understand that her husband wore a tailor-made suit, all wool and a yard wide, at their wedding. . The year just going out, from an economic standpoint, dealt rather unkindly to local farmers and orchardists. With rains at the wrong times, cut ting down the yields of small grains, caused farmers to work day and night to pre vent heavy damage to alfalfa and other hay crops. . High winds damaged farm buildings and trees, while in sects, rodents and other pests were far more numerous than usual. Repair costs and prices of equipment were higher while prices of farm products were lower. . Field corn, which lately was beginning to be consid ered as a paying crop beret where most of the feed corn is being shipped in, was hit two ways. The harvesting price went up $3 per ton and the selling price to feed stores dropped $3. Budget Bureau Approves Program Washington - (DPD The bu reau of the budget has ap proved a $1,287,000 modern ization program for. the Vet erans Administration hospital at in Portland, Ore., the of fice of Richard L. Neuberger, who had urged funds for the program, was advised of the bureau's ap proval by Dr. William S. Spanish Vessels Take Sub in Tow San Sebastian, Spain -UPD-Two Spanish fishing vessels reported by radio today they have taken in tow an uniden tified submarine found drift ing on the high seas. The fishing boats Virgen del Coro and Virgen del Car men said in a radio message picked up by the Mount Igu aldo maritime radio here that the submarine . appeared . to have no crew aboard. The radio message said the submarine was of about 600 tons displacement and carried the marking "X15".
