May Be Too Hot for China Communists Tokyo - (ITD - Communist China may have found the mountainous country of Tibet too hot to handle but it hasn't given up trying to master that ancient Kingdom. It has served notice that it is going to step up what it calls a "democratic renova tion" in Tibet. One of the main point on the Communists' 1959 pro gram for Tibet is the develop ment, "on a wide and deep scale, propaganda and educa tion on patriotism and social ism." And its leaders are going to have to work. Every indication from Tib et, however, is that the Tibet ans do not need any lessons in patriotism, patriotism to ward Tibet, that is. Reports from Tibet give firm evidence that there is a wide-spread revolt in the king dom against Communist Chin ese rule. Estimates of Red deaths is a summer-fall up rising total about 50,000, and Tibetan death estimates range from 5,000 to 15,000. The warlike, nomadic Khamba tribe in the eastern province touched off the up rising, and it apparently is spreading. The Peiping government admitted that it was having trouble in Tibet when it an nounced it was going to de lay imposition of its controv ersial commune system in that country. But that does not mean Red China has given up its at tempt to communize Tibet. The "Tibet Autonomous Area Preparatory Comniitte's Standing Committee" met in Lhasa last Friday to discuss 1959 policy. The policy, according to Radio Peiping, includes "de velopment of socialist propa ganda and eduction and par ticipation of leaders in phys ical labor." The latter point apparently was an extension of Red China's "back to the farm" movement in which intellec tuals, white collar workers, students and others were forc ibly sent out of the cities to work on the farms and in fac tories. The committee, under the firm hand of Red Chinese representatives adopted a seven-point program. It included: "Develop on a wide and deep scale propaganda and education on patriotism and socialism . . . also to revive various types of training net works and hold periodic meet ings to listen to reports and exchange opinions." "Carry out planned de velopment and training of leaders." "Develop the undevelop ed areas and carry out re forestation in rural areas. "Encourage the construc tion of railways, highways and factories." "Carry out public health and physical education pro grams." "Put on a healthy found ation the operational systems of the various agencies and raise their efficiency." "Organize the leaders and have them participate in physical labor." The Chinese Communists set an ambitious program for themselves. The Tibetans did not promise to make it any easier. A Per ORCHARDS SUNDAYS Is That By OLGA BURNS Though one is almost as un likely to see a wild reindeer in the United States as to see those pulling Santa Claus' sleigh, there are a few left in the northern part of the coun try, and there are plenty in Canada. They are known as caribou. Nonetheless, they are just as much reindeer as the domesti cated type, used by the Lapps, some of which were imported to Alaska in the late 1890s. There are two main varie ties of American caribou, the chief difference between them being the terrain in which they live. One, the smaller, is the Barren . Ground type that lives in the open tundras" of the extreme north. The other is the woodland caribou that inhabits the wooded areas from the northeastern states north to where the tundra be gins, just below the Arctic Circle. Strangely enough, there is a tendency on the part of the southern variety to migrate north in the winter, while the Barren Ground type definite ly moves south. The two meet where the forest gives way to the barrens, but there is ap parently no mingling of them. Why the Lapps and some of the northern Siberian tribes should have domesticated the Eurasian caribou, or reindeer, and the Eskimos and Indians, who presumably came from Asia, have not done so with the American is something of a mystery. So far as the Eski mos are concerned, it couldn't have been for lack of appre ciation of the animal. Chicago packers boast they use all of the pig but the squeal. The Eskimos, however, go them one better. When they kill a caribou, they make it a point to eat the contents of the ani mal's stomach. Unpalatable as that may seem, it is apparent ly quite sound. Fully Satisfactory The caribou feeds on mosses and lichens. These plants in their natural state would be as undigestible to an Eskimo as grass would be to us, but once the digestive juices of the caribou have begun to act on them, the Eskimo finds them fully as satisfactory as they would be in the final form of steak. The caribou population of the Far North was estimated at upwards of 30,000,000 less than a century ago. Today, however, it probably does not exceed 1,000,000. There, Mrs. Young had a surprise party arranged for the Cub Scouts with decorations, refresh ments and games. This cele brated Jack Young's 10th birthday. A short business meeting was held in which Michael Clark was elected Denner and Spence Webber was elected assistant denner. . Tuesday, Dec. 23, Den 11 again met at the home of the Den mother, where the Cubs made Christmas presents for their families.
