I was married at 17 and divorced a year la ter. Now I am nearly 19 and I want to get married again, but my mother is trying to get me to wait. I understand now there is good reason for long court ships, but I don t think my mother understands all the problems I am up against. Be cause I am a young divorcee men just have no respect for me. All the dates I have had since my divorce have wound up in tussles. It is impossible for me to date as I did before I was married and I don't want to go into seclusion. The man I want to marry is a stable kind of guy. He courted me before I married my first husband so it's not as though I'm getting in volved with someone I know nothing about. Mrs. R. W. Six months aft er she was married Evelyn came home crying and told me she was sorry she didn't listen to me and that she would never again go against what I tell her. Now here it is, only a year later, and she's ready to do it again. I keep telling Evelyn that she is still too young to know men. The guy she wants to marry treats her very nicely now, but she doesn't know what he'll turn out to be aft er they're married. It was the same way with the first one. I do understand Evelyn's problems with her dates be cause I have been through the same kind of thing. I am also a divorcee. It's not easy, but if oy ever want to get married again you'ee got to fight off the wolves. if you ever want to get mar ried again you've got to fight off the wolves. The Council: In spite of the fact that she now considers herself an experienced wom an, Evelyn seems to have learned sadly little from her. first marriage. She has come around full cycle from the po sition, "Mother new best after all' to "Mother doesn't under stand me and my problems." Unfortunately Mother is very poorly equipped to help matters. We gather that Mrs. R. W. wants very much to pro tect her daughter from fur ther harm, but seems to have very little knowledge herself of what factors go into making a successful marriage relation ship. Evelyn states quite openly that she wants to get married because she cannot cope with the dating situation. Sut she has these dating problems, she maintains, because she leaped out of marriage. She seems to be doing a fairly quick - tempered dance be tween the frying pan and the fire. Both Evelyn and her mother need to do a lot of maturing mentally and emotionally be- Lfore they can think in terms of making successful marriages. Mrs. R. W. should recognize that the problem is not so much to "know men" and to be mistrustful of them as it is to know oneself and to have the firm resolve to create a satisfying family life. The women who think in these terms will automatically at tract men with similar aspira tions. Women who are con- fdsed about their own aims attract and are attracted to wolves and at the same time are resentful and frightened of them. Despite their big bad exteriors, these wolves feel just about the same way about women. We'll hazard a guess that Evelyn could profit much more right now from an edu cational job and group social program than from dating. If she develops some of her abili ties and learns to socialize with a variety of individuals, she'll learn to discriminate and will gain self-confidence. (Copyright 1958, General Features Corp.) Granquist, district director of Internal Revenue Service for Oregon. The period for filing 1958 federal income tax returns will extend from Jan. 2 to April 15, inclusive. The Med ford office is in the Federal office building, Sixth st. and North Riverside ave. S 0 r 7 '58 CHAMP Rocky Cola- vito of the Cleveland Indians has been named the Ameri can League's slugging cham pion for 1958. In ballplayers' terms, he "gave the ball the longest ride downtown." His batting average was .620. Final Phase of Drive Planned Portland The Oregon for est industry heads into the final phase of its drive for $250,000 for the forest in dustry pavilion and exhibit at the Oregon centennial exposi tion at Portland next summer. Thirty members of the for est industry committee of the centennial met with Chairman Anthony Brandenthaler of the centennial commission at Port land and pledged "complete and enthusiastic support." Brandenthaler told the com mittee made up of industry leaders, that 8 million visit ors will see exhibits worth $25 million at the exposition and international trade fair. He declared that the interna tional trade fair will be the biggest of its kind in the Unit ed States except one held previously at New York city. Members of the committee declared that the forest in dustry project will be under construction . by Feb. 1 Roy Gould chairman of the indus try's centennial committee, declared that all sections of the industry "from logger to supplier of equipment and services" are helping. REWARD YOURSELF New York -(UPD- Because it contained her driver's license and passport and even though there was no money in it, ma rine stewardess Evelyn Casper was so grateful to Leopold Goetz for returning the wallet she had lost that she gave him a check for $75. But police charged that Goetz raised the amount on the check to $175 before cashing it. He was charged with petit larceny. Scout Training Session Planned , A basic training session for adult leaders in scouting will be held Jan. 8, 15 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Hedrick Junior High school in Medford. The session is planned to give leaders of the Big Pines district "certain fundamentals that make it possible for them to understand Scouting, unit organization, leadership and program," officials stated. Expected to attend the Cub Scout leaders, den mothers, Boy Scout leaders, committee men, parents and heads of institutions.- Infectious Hepatitis Reported Last Week Two cases of infectious hep atitis, one each in Medford and Gold Hill, were reported to the Jackson county health department for the week end ing Dec. 26. , Other communicable dis eases reported included 31 cases of influenza, including 19 in Medford, 5 in Trail, 4 in Phoenix and 3 in Ashland; 11 measles in Medford; 7 Ger man measles, 6 in Medford, 1 in Trail; 1 whooping cough in Medford; 2 scarlet fever; 1 each in Medford and Rogue River; 1 strep throat, Central Point; 3 mumps, Shady Cove; 1 chicken pox, Medford; and 5 pneumonia, 4 in Medford and 1, Central Point. Riverside NEXT TO FOOD BASKET Phone SP 3-5182 Appraisers to Assist Reporting Personal Property Assessable Appraisers from the coun ty assessor's office will help taxpayers report personal property assessable under Oregon law for the 1959-60 tax year, according to Jack son County Assessor Ray J. Schumacher. The appraisers will list and place on the tax returns all in formation needed in order to help the valuator set uniform value on all property, Schu macher said. In the past the appraising has been done by individual personal property owners with the assessor's office working from the owner's re port. Property Assessed "Personal property to be assessed under Oregon laws generally means stock in trade, merchandise, supplies, equipment, furniture and fix tures used in a commercial en terprise, buildings on leased land, trailer houses, farm ma chinery, livestock, and furni ture furnished in a rental unit," Schumacher explained. The person who has posses sion on the assessment date of personal property which is mortgaged, pledged, con signed, conditionally sold or held for iale, is for the pur pose of assessment and taxa tion the owner thereof, he said. Personal property exempt from taxation, the law states, includes "All household fur niture, goods and furnishings actually in use by the owner in his dwelling or abode or temporarily in storage or pending delivery by a vendor to him for his personal use, and not for sale or in commer cial use, and all wearing ap parel and other personal ef fects held by any person for his exclusive use and benefit and hot for sale or commer cial use, are exempt from tax ation." Available On Request All personal property tax payers will receive a notice of value of assessment and copies of the appraiser's list are available on request. Personal property valuators use current market value from trade blue books of industry, based upon age, condition and resale value of trailer houses, machinery and farm equip ment, according to the as sessor. Where no trade book value is available, furniture,- ma chinery and equipment are valued by current new cost, age and useful life. Livestock Values Livestock values are de termined by studies of sales for the year by the assessors and state tax commission. Inventories are reported at cost or market, the assessor said. Inventories reported should conform to books and income tax returns of the firm reporting. Average in ventories are allowed if book keeping shows monthly inven tory value. . Election to use the average method must be made by noti fication to the assessor at the time of filing the return and shall be binding upon the tax paper for the current year. Concerning assessment of personal property and can cellation of assessment in cer tain cases, the law reads: . "All personal property not exempt from taxation shall be assessed at its true cash value as of January 1, at 1 a.m. Covers Grain . "If the assessment covers grain, seed, hay, fruit, veget ables, nuts, hops, wool or fish or poultry held primarily for sale for human consumption, or any processed product thereof, in the hands of a farmer producer or processor while being transported to or held in storage in public or private warehouse, the asses sor shall cancel the assessment in whole or proportionate part English Department Head Named at UO Eugene - Kester Svendsen, a professor of English in the University of Oklahoma, is ex pected to be the new head of the University of Oregon Eng lish department. Svendsen's appointment is subject to con firmation by the state board of higher education. Svendsen is expected to as sume his duties at Oregon in time for the 1959 summer ses sion, which begins June 22. The new appointee will take over an office now held by Prof. Ernest G. Moll, who has been acting head of the de partment since the death in August, 1957, of Philip Web ster Souers. Souers had been department head since 1945. A similar cancellation of assessment shall apply to live stock on feed and shipped for slaughter to a point either within or without this state before May 1 of the year of assessment. "Livestock and poultry pro ducers will have to provide the assessor with certification of purchase by a recognized slaughterer. Commission yard sales to livestock buyers are not acceptable," the law states. . -No Cancellation No cancellation of assess ment under this section shall be made unless the required proof is furnished to the as sessor on or before May 15 of the year of assessment The law reads, concerning requirements of taxpayers to furnish a list of taxable prop erty, that "Every county as sessor may require all tax payers to furnish a list of all taxable real property and per sonal property owned by, or in possession of the taxpayer and situated in his county. The list shall be signed by . the taxpayer, the managing agent or officer and shall be verified by oath. Only infor mation that will aid the as sessor in arriving at a fair assessment valuation shall be required in the list." All returns shall be filed before March 3, but the as sessor, upon written request filed with him prior to that date and for good cause, shall allow a reasonable extension of time for filing a return. " No return shall be con trolling on the assessor . in any respect in the assessment of any property," the law states. "On any failure to file the required return, the as sessor shall list and evaluate the property from the best in formation obtainable from other sources."
