Glenn Ford 'Box Office King' While Liz, By VERNON SCOTT UPI Hollywood Correspondent . Hollywood-dTD-Glenn Ford was voted the top money-mak ing star of 1958 yesterday in a poll of more than 700 mo tion picture exhibitors. They named two glamour queens Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot-among the top 10 Liz ranked second in the balloting, followed in order by Jerry Lewis (3), Marlon Brando (4), Rock Hudson (5), William Holden (6), Brigitte (7), Yul Brynner (8), James Stewart (9) and Frank Sin etra (10). Repeat winners from last year's poll, conducted by the motion picture herald, were Lewis, Holden, Hudson, Bryn ner, Stewart and Sinatra. Brando returned to the top 10 after dropping out for the past two years. Ford's top rating came as a surprise. His last appear ance in the golden circle was in 1956, when he placed fifth. He was 12th in 1953. Wayne Bumped Off "I've been around a long time," Ford said, "and this really comes as a surprise to me. Of course I'm delighted and happy with the results of the poll. I had the help of a heck of a lot of people. "I just hopa more people will turn out to see more movies in 1959." Bumped from the list of the 10 biggest box-office draws this year were John Wayne, 2nd last "year, Pat Boone (3), Elvis Presley (4) and Gary Cooper (6). The poll reflects ' neither popularity nor performance of the stars. Chances are if a star makes three or four pic tures during the year, he will fare better in ticket sales than a performer who appears in a single movie. Last year the first 10 did not include one actress, but in 1956 Marilyn Monroe and Kim Novak registered 9th and 10th, respectively. All-time champ in the poll is Bing Crosby, who placed Si s. Mickey's "Andy Hardy" series drew votes from thea ter owners for three years as the best money-maker. Only other star to score more than twice as box-office king is John Wayne who man aged the feat in 1954, 1951 Ike Escorts His Grandson On Clothes-Buying Sortie Gettysburg, Pa. 0IPD Satur day is the big shopping day in the town of Gettysburg, and President Eisenhower made it even bigger yesterday. He created a commotion among main street merchants yesterday morning by bring ing his 10-year-old grandson, David, on a clothes-buying ex pedition which saw an outlay of $60.80, plus sales tax. ' After visiting three stores, David had a replenished ward robe-part for "good" and part for roughing it at the Eisen hower farm where he and his grandparents are spending the holidays. With his grandson in tow and a covey of secret service men in his wake, the Presi dent turned out for his shopping tour shortly after the stores opened at 9 a.m. His first stop was at Pitz er's Men's store just off the town square where he smil ingly told a startled clerk he wanted to see a suit for David. In what was undoubtedly the most abject moment in Pitz- er's history, the clerk had to confess the store didn't han dle boy's clothing but recom mended Bix-Sway, a shop two doors down the street. Proudly Escorted At Bix-Sway, the President was spotted at the door by and 1950. Winner of the first polls-in 1932 and 1933-was Marie Dressier. Rock Hudson, last year's topper, slipped to fifth. Sina tra, fifth in 1957, plummeted to 10th, while comedian Lewis climbed from ninth last year to the number-three spot for the current season. A new twist was added this year when sex-kitten Bardot climbed aboard the box-office list. She is the first star ever voted among the top 10 who has never made an American movie. Gerald Bixler, one of the own ers, who proudly escorted his distinguished shoppers to the clothing racks. In short order and with a minimum of his grandfather's advice, David picked out a $27.50 Ivy League styled char coal blue single breasted suit and an $8.95 pair of medium grey wool slacks-plus sales tax. Ike and David turned up next at Sherman's, next door to the Gettysburg National bank. With the dress-up stuff cut of the way, David wanted some he-man garb for the farm where the temperatures dipped to near zero last night. Insulated Boots With the help of two clerks -Melvin Little and M. I. Berg dale, David emerged with the following: A pair of insulated boots, $14.95; a plaid wool shirt, $2.95; a pair of sturdy oorrdu roy trousers, $4.95; and high top wool sox, $1.50. Grandfather cheerfully paid in cash. However, the merchants he visited confessed they were a little startled to see the chief executive peering into their bins of winter sox and long woolen underwear. Hunting Clothes The secret service men probably attracted more atten tion than the President and David because they were bun dled up in rough hunting clothes. "My heavens, they look like the Brinks gang," one woman bystander exclaimed as they followed the President about. Mario Cavaleri presented Rosselini's petition to the Rome Civil court. An Italian custody verdict would not necessarily be of much value to the director. Rossellini, also in Paris, said the iriree children were visiting him today. Rossellini, reached by tele ghone at a hotel, refused to say whether the children were merely spending the day with him or whether it was a mora permanent arrangement.
