Medford, Oregon, Sumhy, December 38. 1938 Koarong Fourth Quarter Boosts Tornadoes to Win S-43 Medford's Tornadoes start ed zephyr-like Friday night on the home floor then turn ed its offense into a roaring, swirling thing to live up to Its ' namesake and defeat the Corvallis Spartans 58-43 dur ing a non-conference game. Medford used its. towering height to advantage around the defensive board, and time after time the red and black clad lanky men would bat the ball out of danger. The Tor nadoes during the first three quarters seemed to have dif ficulty in getting off the floor. Corvallis Guards Dwight Hun ter and Keith Morrow put springs in their feet to make up for the difference in height as more than one jump ball was taken away from Med ford. However, the Tornadoes lost the ball only five times to Corvallis' 21. Foul Shooting Poor The Tornadoes were unable to drop many in the bucket from the free-throw line un til the second half was well underway. Also, Corvallis kept its defensive board well sewed up and the Tornado tall men had difficulty in pen etrating it. The Spartans welded a wall of players into a tight defen sive unit and used the quick break effectively to work up to within 4 points of the Med ford squad in the third quar ter. However, the Tornadoes turned loose their thupdering offensive, tightened up a close - checking man for -man de fense and took the game com pletely away from the Spar tans. The charge was backed by the long range artillery of outside shooting from Jerry Shults who after several at tempts during the first two quarter: started sinking 'em in. Shults was backed up in this department by Booth Dea kins, Jerry Anderson and George Koch. , ' The fourth quarter turned Into a rout for both the ref erees and the Tornadoes as too close checking resulted in sprawling tangles and temp ers flared. Some spectators noted that the referees ap peared to have lost complete control of the players on both sides.' Corvallis Coach Bob Payne remarked it was the roughest game he had ever seen. Shults swished two foul shots for 42-35. After a wild scramble under the basket Shults reached up and over the basket to drop another two points through the buck et for 44-37. Two more suc cessful free throws then Koch tipped one in for 46-37 fol lowed by a quick one from Shults again. Koch sunk two foul shots followed by a rebound by Shults to hike the score to 54-39. Cal Dean drove in for N. Salem To Face Beaverton Corvallis, Ore. -(CPD- It'll be North Salem versus Beaver ton for the championship of the prep division of the Far West Classic here. North Salem gained the finals Saturday with a 57-41 win over Marshf ield in the second . game of first round action. In the first game Beav erton topped Roseburg 46-41 to gain the finals berth. Grant Harter, the big 6-9 center for North Salem, led his team to victory getting 28 points. He tallied 14 of his teams 18 second quarter points. Steve Pauly of Beaverton got 22 points and 24 rebounds in leading the Beavers to vic tory. North Salem and Beaver ton will vie at 3:45 p.m. Mon day for the title with Rose burg and Marshfield meeting at 2 o'clock in the consolation finals. California Sharpens Defense for Bowl Pasidena, Calif. -(UPD-Cali- fornia's Golden Bears, strict ly a longshot for next Thurs day's Rose Bowl, polished up their defense Saturday for the anticipated offensive might of Iowa. Coach Pete Elliott and his squad arrived in southern Cal ifornia Friday, after prelim inary drills at Berkeley. Two free throws set the score at 58 to 41 for Medford. Then the white and blue clad Spartans made a last minute rally to set the final score at 58-43. Spartans Lead Off Corvallis Hunter, Morrow and Jack Baines set up a fast paced combo at the start of the game and gave the Spar tans a 5-4 lead. Medford was hampered by fumbling free throws throughout the first two quarters. However, Dea kins and Shults were able, to tie it up at 10 all at the end of the first quarter. John Frohnmayer gave Medford the edge in the second quar ter by a tip-in to ring up a 12-10 score. Anderson, Koch and Harvey hiked the score up to 25-20 at the end of the second quarter.. Corvallis had a brief rally in the second quarter started by Darrel Cox in the last 4 minutes remaining in the sec ond canta Spartan Gene Mil brath started the scoring flur ry, quickly followed by a two handed set shot and another bucket by Steve Moe from the side. Medford Coach Frank Roe landt had little, to say about Friday's game. "It was a very rugged and poorly played game," he remarked. VWe did not show 'em too much. Hundreds of thou sands of more comfortable East Texas Wins Bowl Game 26-7 Orlando, Fla. -(UP!)- Quar terback Sam McCord, passing a wet ball in stiff winds and running on a soggy turf, pac ed the East Texas State Lions to a 26-7 win Saturday over Missouri Valley in the Tan gerine bowl. McCord, a 172-pound jun ior, passed for one touchdown and set up another before , a disappointing crowd of only 4,000. Rain and 15-mile-per-hour winds ruined hopes for a 10,000 turnout. The Lions marched 89 yards early in the second period for the opening touchdown with fullback Joe Harbour . going over from two yards out. Har bour, McCord and fullback Joe Cevers wefe the main stays of the drive. . Missouri struck back quiet ly. After the kickoff, the Vik ing drove 73 yards with half back Mel Rogers scoring from the one. Ray - Mosey booted the extra point to give Mis souri a 7-6 lead, the only time the Vikings were in front all afternoon. Striking behind the passing of John Unites, they led the league in scoring with 381 points. Sunday the Colts crash into the league's stingiest defense, New York's defensive unit, led by such star linemen as Andy Robustelli, Dick Mod- zelewski and Rosey Gier, al lowed fewer points than any other club. This defense hauled the low scoring Giants (they averaged less than 20 points a game) into an Eastern Division tie with the Browns and then shut out the high scoring Cleveland club in a play-off last Sunday, 10-0. The 280- pound Grier suffered knee and arm injuries in that game and may not play against the Colts. Giants Nipped Colts The Giants, who have won nine division and four league crowns, edged the Colts at New York, 24-21, midway in the regular campaign. How ever, Unites and L. G. Dupre, Baltimore's regular, left half back, did not. play in that game because of injuries. Pat Summerall, whose 49 yard field goal with 127 sec onds to go enabled the Giants to defeat the Browns two weeks ago and force a playoff for Eastern honors, beat the Colts in that regular season encounter with a 28-yarder with only 2:40 to play. Unites fires most of his passes to Lenny Moore, Ray Berry and Jim Mutscheller. Unites has thrown at least one touchdown pass in his last 25 games, an NFL record. Don Heinrich probably will start at quarterback for the Giants but , Charley Conerly, oldest current NFL player at 38, figures to do most of the signal-calling for the home team. He said "I licked him last night but I didn't get the decision." Judge Gus Jacobson had Hart ahead,' 96-95 on a 10- point basis. Judge Stu Win son agreed, 97-94. Referee Jimmy Peerless la- fored Dupas, 98-97. The Unit ed Press International gave Dupas an edge, 95-94. Hart, winning his 26th bout in 31 starts, forced the action in every round and landed the harder punches; but fast stepping Dupas landed the most leather and did the most damage. Doc Needham Dies Following Stroke Corvallis - (DPD - Lester I (Doc) Needham, 50, athletic director for the University of Wichita, died at 1:40 a.m. to day in a Corvallis hospital.
