14 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Orefon, Mday, December 26, 195S In Spite of Winter Weather You'll BUY Wisely, by Checking the Classified Ads! Is That So? By OLGA BURNS The swan has a reputation of being just about as quick tempered as it is beautiful. Its belligerence, howeveras the following incident reported by J. H. Rihlmann, of Oak land, N.J., suggests is due pri marily to courage and its in stinct for self -preservation. .- While fishing last summer on the Ramapo river near its entry to the Pompton " lakes, Rihlmann's 14-year-old son and some friends took their outboard motor boats into a marshy area. There were fish there, but there were swans there, too, which "came at them hissing and with such force and animosity, with necks outstretched and wings flapping, that they had to de fend themselves with oars. "One of the swans struck one of the boats with such force that he actually made a dent in the housing of the mo tor. Needless to say, the boys hightailed it out of there as fast as they could The incident is typical of how swans react in defense of their young. Though the boys obviously couldn't investigate - and shouldn't have - they would almost certainly have found swans' nests nearby, Most likely they would have been situated on top of a muskrat house of which there were probably plenty in the area. The whistling swan, which these may have been although they usually summer much farther north, build their nests much as the trumpeters do, and, as Mrs. Helene Cont- way, of Dillon, Mont., wrote in a recent letter, that is "usu ally on muskrat houses, beav er houses or anything substan tial above water level.' ' Instinct Common - . But the instinct of self preservation is common to all things while the courage of the swan is extremely high. Why is this, since the swan has no claws and only a blunt bill designed primarily for gathering vegetation? Part of the answer ' is that the swan has another weapon his wings. The trumpeter, gradually being saved from exinction, is the largest aqua tic water fowl on the contin ent. The whistler is virtually only a slightly smaller edi tion. Their maximum wing spreads are respectively ten and seven feet. The power of their wings is enough to drive these birds, some weighing well in excess of 25 pounds, through the air at speeds esti mated as high as 100 miles an hour. Naturally, with wings like that, the swan can and does deliver a powerful blaw, and Texas natural gas reserves came to 113 trillion cubic feet at the end of 1957, or 46 per cent of the U.S. total.
