V 2A MAIL TRIBUNE, Medferd Oreeen, Thursday, Dccamber IS, 1958 Traffic Volume Shows Increase Traffic Volume in southern Oregon showed considerable Increase in November com pared with a year ago, accord ing to counts made at four check points by the state high way department. A 13.3 per cent increase over November, 1957, was noted on Highway 99 two miles south of Talent, where n average daily count of 7,538 vehicles was tabulated by the automatic traffic re corder. Oregon Highway 238 at Ruch account ed for an average daily total of 473 vehicles, an increase of 7.3 per cent. Highway 66 in the Siski- yous near Ashland totaled 1,092 daily for a 14.1 per cent increase. Usual ly what hap pens is that a frantic moth er writes say ing -that her only son has been told he has Hodgkin's disease and has been sent to an x-ray man for treatment. The moth er asked her doctor what Hodgkin's disease is, and he said he didn't have time to write her a lecture on the subject. When she got to the x-ray man, she begged hinvto tell her, but he said that wasn't his business. He ad vised her to go back and get the information from her doc tor. Then she asked the doc tor's nurse, and she said "If I told you, you wouldn't under stand it." Then she went to the library and looked it up, and read that it is sort of half way condition between an in fection and a cancerous tu mor, and that the outlook is not too hopeful. Actually, there is much evi dence today to indicate but not prove that the disease is due to a virus. Whatever it is, it acts like an infection which causes great enlargement of the lymph nodes in many parts of the body. I have my faults, but I have really had some stupid bosses in my day. The way I see it. I'll never be able to be a yes man the way Maria wants me to be. I had a rough time in the serv ice because of this, and I made up my mind back then that once I'm a civilian again, I'm going to be my own boss. I want to go into business for mvself. but this will call for some sacrifices from Ma ria. We'll have to go into debt and Dut off having a family for some time. On going to a doctor and getting an x- ray film made of his chest, he may find that his chest is full of the same nodules. A few years later, he may develop a fairly high fever every day, just as if he had an infection Lymph Nodes Melt Away On. going to the x-ray man and getting treatment, the pa tient usually will find that the big lymph nodes will "melt away" witty in a few days. The only trouble is that often the infection seems to remain. If the person is treated a day or two after the big lymph nodes are found, he has a good chance of living comfortably for the next several years. I I have seen these people go 7 or 8 years without trouble. Then often they come back; perhaps itching all over, los ing weight and running a fe ver. Then they have to be treated again, but this time they usually do not do so well. Very encouraging are re recent reports by my old friend, Dr. Hugh Hare of the Humor Clinic in Los Angeles who, with Dr. Dahle and Dr. Trump, says that when they can treat the patients with very powerful x-rays, right after the disease appears, they can cause 80 per cent of them to stay well for at least five .years, in some, cases medi cines are being given with the hope of modifying the course of the disease, but as yet the results do not appear to have been very satisfactory. pears rather casual about thinking up sacrifices for Ma rie to make, but seems closed to the possibility of making a small sacrifice h i m s e 1 f namely, learning to get along with a boss. - Saying "yes," is easier for some individuals than others, but usually the question of knwing more or less than the boss is not the determining factor. A person of this type nat urally wants to be his own boss, and many are successful at it. It is doubtful, however, whether such a person is in the best position to create a measure of success if the ob stacles are too big. This deep ly self-devaluating person has a tendency to cave in and lose his head at signs of possible failure. ' Walter also appears to wrongly confuse an inability to accept authority with mas culinity. In our society true manliness is usually connect ed with the ability to have authority, but it is understood that each man must serve his apprenticeship. Power is not handed over to him. He must fight to win it and part of the fight has much to do with curbing the emotions enough to be able to see the other fellow's point of view. Pinafore, and at least one Medford patrol man is inclined to agree. Patrolman Gerald L. But ler was trated for a dog bite Monday afternoon after he was bitten by a collie he was trying to free from some wire. According to the report the officer was called to the alley behind 16 Lewis st. at 3:30 p.m., and although wearing gloves at the time, the dog bite him on the left hand before he was re leased. Listed at the subject of the case at the top of the officer's report regarding the bitten hand was "life of a policeman." Bank Debits In Area Show Rise Eugene Total bank debits in November for southwest ern Oregon were 10.4 per cent above November last year and 2.3 per cent below October 1958, according to the bureau of business research in the University of Oregon. The bureau collects reports of bank debits from through out the state. Debits are con sidered indicators of business activity. The debit total for 11 banks in Curry, Jackson and oJse- phine counties this Novemb ber was $78,856,984. State total was 167 reporting banks was $1,806,370,812, 7.0 per cent below October, and 5.8 per cent above November last year.
