Communist China Like 'Huge Zoo' India Expert Says By PETER T. SUM Uniled Press International Hong Kong - (UPD - A noted Indian population expert said today Communist China is a "huge zoo." Dr. S. Chandrasekhar, who recently completed a six-week tour of Communist China con ducting research on Red China's economic, social and academic life, said everyone on the China mainland was like an animal doing what he was told to do. The one-time director of the Demographic Research Insti tute of the United Nations Economic and Social Council declared that the Chinese are sacrificing their personal free dom for China. The new firm is known as Clarence A. Brown, business counsel with offices in Kent field, Marion county, Calif. The new service is designed to assist retailers in improv ing profits and sales through using proven, practical, mod ern merchandising and operat ing methods, a spokesman said. Brown was assistant man ager and acting manager of the Montgomery Ward store here from 1947-49 and active in Medford civic affairs, it was reported. Chandrasekhar said he toured China not as a Indian official and he was not a guest of the Communist govern ment. Prussia of Asia' The American-educated stat istician said he visited 12 ma jor Chinese cities and four newly established people's communes, and his impression of the mainland was that "I can almost thing of 30 million Chinese troops goose-stepping and China will become the Prussia of Asia." He said the Communists could achieve this if they con tinued the present pace of their national reconstruction tinued to add at an annual rate of between 13 and 14 million to the present 650 million people who are living on the mainland. Say China Unpopulated Although the Communists assured him that the huge population was really no prob lem to the Peiping govern ment, Chandrasekhar said he thought life in Communist China could be better if there were fewer people. He said Communist officials told him however, that "China is underpopulated." He added the Communists had claimed that "China has lots of virgin land and uncul tivated soil to feed and clothe a population double its pres ent size. Of the communes, Chand rasekhar said while the basic needs of life were assured, the communal life has wiped away all traces of traditional Chinese family life. Study of the grade and high school programs, including kindergartens, will be made in each of the approximately 225 high school area meetings planned, according to William C. Jones, newly elected state chairman of the Joint Com mittee and vice principal of Willamette High school, Bethel district. The meetings are designed as an opportunity for local people to become better ac quainted with the total edu cational program offered in their communities, Jones said. He added that patrons would be asked for suggestions about the comprehensiveness of the school curriculum and needs for additional offerings, Follow-up Studies The meetings are follow-up studies to the recent report presented to Oregon citizens by Dr. James B. Conant on his study of the American high school, Jones said. Parti cipants of the Conant meeting as well as those involved in the recent Governor's confer ence on the Oregon High School will be 'involved in planning. Theme will be "Looking in on Your Schools." Materials available for use will be Look ing in on Your Schools, a national PTA manual; Dr. Conant Looks at American High Schools, a Dr. Conant study guide; and a State De partment of education folder used at the Governor's Con ference on the Oregon High School, sponsored by the Cur riculum Department of the state department of education. The Joint Committee has for several years promoted conferences to improve under standing of schools of Oregon. Last year they sponsored studies of the high school and the previous year held county meetings to consider school legislation pending in the state legislature. As one might suspect, this process leaves growth rings on the horn so that it is pos sible to tell the age of the animal by counting them. ' The business of shedding his horns is probably not as painful to the antelope as it is to the deer. It is gradual. No wounds are left. Most deer, however, break their horns off, leaving angry sores at the base. And very likely there Is another advantage in it for the antelope. Because his horns are replaced by a con version of the core, much less energy is required for the process than in the case of the deer who must grow an entire new set. Quite possibly because there is not such a great drain on the antelope for horn production, that is the reason why he is a far speedier animal than the deer and has vastly greater jumping power. Faster Than Deer In any case, it is a fact that the antelope's speed is great er than that of the deer or any of the predators. Indeed, it is so great that up to the 1840's the numbers of them in the West were possibly greater than those of the buf falo. As nearly as can be esti mated their population then totaled between 30 and 40 million. There were herds of them so vast that antelope trails have been found in which their hooves have worn away the ground to a depth of eight or ten inches. But the speed of the ante lope is probably the chief cause for his numbers having been cut to a present popula tion of maybe 30,000. It gave him such a feeling of secur ity that he felt he could in dulge his curiosity about the white man as he could about other predators. And he could have, too, except that the white hunters had high powered rifles. (Released by McClure .
