Martin S. - My wife and I
were married ten years ago
at the age of 18. Both our
parents were against it, but
we eloped.
My parents had money put
aside for my college educa
tion, but after I married they
said the money would be for
my sister, since I wouldn't be
able to go to college because
our first child was on the way
We now have three chil
dren and our youngest is six.
I haven't gotten very well
settled in life from the finan
cial point of view, and I am
sure I could do much better
if I could get a college degree
in business administration.
My father died a year ago,
and my mother would like to
take us into her home. Then
my wife would be able to go
to work. We could get through
the four years easily, but my
wife doesn't want to live with
my mother.
Martha. S. - I don't think
it's a good idea to live with
in-laws, no matter how good
relations are. As it happens
my relations with my mother-in-law
are not of the best. She
doesn't talk about it, but I
feel she hasn't really forgiven
me for marrying Martin be
fore he had a chance to get in
his schooling.
My mother-in-law is not par
ticularly good with the chil
dren, anyway. She seems to
make a big fuss over them
and give them lots of affec
tion and treats, and then she'll
suddenly turnon them and
become very strict. They say
they don't know where they
are with her. They don't like
the idea of going to live with
her.
I wouldn't mind going to
work, but I feel that the chil
dren are still too young to be
left to their own devices after
school. Besides my job could
n't cover expenses if we had
to pay rent.
The Council:. Martin's drive
in wanting to go after his col
lege education at this period
of his life deserves some credit
and encouragement from his
wife. It seems to us that if this
marriage were more firmly
founded in mutual under
standing and helpfulness, Mar
tha would be so eager to have
her husband fulfill his ambi
tions that she would be more
than willing to make any
necessary sacrifice.
Martha's arguments do
strike us as hedging. It is
understood that conditions
might not be ideal in a mother-in-law's
home, but where
there is a will to accomplish
a goal, a helpful wife might
try manipulating the situation
so that everyone concerned
could achieve greater happi
ness within limitations.
Whether or not she quite
realizes it herself, we suspect
that Martha really doesn't
want her husband to go to col
lege. She should ask herself
whether this is so and investi
gate the reasons for it. Per
haps she is afraid that her
husband will go too far be
yond her, or perhaps she feels
that his attending school at a
late age is a rebuke to her for
the hasty marriage. We be
lieve that she would be much
happier with herself if she
gave up this kind of self-centered
brooding and threw her
self with enthusiasm into the
job of helping her husband
achieve the kind of success he
really wants.

Plane Crash Ends
Holiday Flight
LaFollette, Tenn. - (UPD - A
flying holiday trip to Florida
ended in death for all six
members of a Toledo, Ohio,
family when their plane
smashed into a fog-shrouded
mountain near here.
The family's Piper Co
manche, its wing coated with
ice, dashed into the side of a
mountain about 14 miles from
here Saturday.
Victims were identified as
businessman Leo Black, 35,
his wife Donna Ruth, 32; their
sons Michael, 10, and Jeffry
Paul, 5; and daughter, Kath
ryn, 8; and Mrs, Violet Mur
rell, Mrs. Black's .mother.
About 100 rescuers scaled
the icy slopes of the mountain
after dark Saturday to recov
er the bodies. An Air Force
helicopter was sent in, but
was unable to help because
of the rough terrain.
STUNT MAN KILLED
Marseille, France - (UPD -Roger
Froidevaux, a 53-year-old
Swiss stunt man trying to
beat his own helicopter-diving
record, killed himself Sunday
in a 160-foot plunge from a
copter into Marseille harbor.
The aging stunt man set a
local record of 145 feet for
helicopter diving several
months ago.
