Black Tornado Beats Axemen; Saturday Game Cancelled by Suspension of South Eugene Eugene TPB- An Oregon School Activities associa tion board of control ruling suspending South' Eugen High school from all inter scholastic competition brought cancellation of the Axemen's basketball game scheduled for last night with the Medford Black Tornado. Suspension was effectire as of noon yesterday and halted a Klamath Falls South Eugene wrestling match which was in pro gress. Board of control action arose out of an incident dur ing Tuesday night's Albany South Eugene basketball game at Eugene when Eu gene students painted ob scene language on school buses which brought play ers and students from Al bany. PROTEST FILED John Cox, Albany school superintendent, filed an of ficial protest with the OSAA on the incident. The OSAA board acted on the protest yesterday morning and the suspension result ed. . A review of the suspen sion will be made . at the next OSAA board meeting on Jan. 15. In the mean time. South Eugene's bas ketball team will hare to hang up its suits. Eugene - Sparked by the shooting and backboard work of Jerry Anderson and gun ning effectively from the field, the Medford high bas ketball aggregation overcame South Eugene here Fridav night 48 to 41 in a steadily moving but slow-paced con flict. It was a close engagement until Medford tucked it away in the last minute of play South was in front 11 to 9 at the quarter but Medford had 24 to 23 edge at halftime and was ahead 36 to 32 after three quarters. Anderson had a 16-poInt tabulation and made 13 re trieves from the backboards to dead the Medford effort. Bo Blair and Wally Larsen led the Axemen scoring with 13 and 11 markers, respective ly. Dave Wetzell cleared the backboards 12 times for Eu gene. .473 From Field Medford's Black Tornado, shooting less than South, had a .473 average from the field compared to 'the Axemen's .319 but SE had 33 to margin in rebounding. Sandy Nosier cut the gap for Eugene to 36 to 34 as the fourth quarter got underway but Anderson got a free toss and Lowell Dean two close in fielders for a 41 to 34 Med ford lead. Blair sank two free points but Jerry Shults of the Tornado hit for 43 to 36. Wet zell canned a jump shot and, with two minutes to play, two free heaves for 43 to 30. At that point Medford put on the freeze. After a minute's Air Force Wins in Bowl , Tokyo (CPD Bob Schneid enbach, former University of Miami quarterback, threw one touchdown pass and scored an other Saturday to lead the U.S. Air Force All-Stars to a 20-0 victory over the U. S. Army All-Stars before a crowd of 78,000 in the annual Rice Bowl game. It was the largest crowd ever to watch an American football game in Japan and included in the turnout were many American and Japanese dignataries, bands represent ing the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Army and Marines, and ser vicemen who put on impres sive pre-game ceremonies. Halfback John Brown of Indianapolis and Walt Hynos ki, a former star on the Uni versity of Pennsylvania foot ball team, scored the other touchdowns for the Air Force. BOX: Medford FG FT E PFTP Giants, Browns Vie For Eastern Title By EARL WRIGHT New York -(CPD- The New York Giants will try to cli max a late-season surge Sun day by defeating the Cleve land Browns for a berth op posite the Baltimore Colts in the National football league championship game and a player Christmas jackpot that could reach $200,000. The Giants tied the Browns for the Eastern division title last Sunday and set up a playoff game in Yankee Stad ium when Pat Summerall booted a 49-yard field goal through falling snow with 127 seconds to go. The Colts fin ished the Western division title off Nov. 30 and probably will be favored whether they PAL Facilities Will Be Closed During Holidays Medford Police Athletic league gym will be closed for the holidays, club coach Jim Zack has announced.' He said the club will re-open on Mon day night, Jan. 5. Medford PAL has had only one boxing match so far this season, meeting the Talent club. Rest of the season, how ever, promises to be busy. On Jan. 9 PAL and Talent mittmen will meet again at the Veterans Administration Domiciliary, Camp White. PAL boxers then will vie in the Talent club's show at the school gym in that town on Jan. 17. Hedrick Shows Some of the locals Lwill compete in the Golden Gloves matches Feb. 5 through 17 at Portland. Then, PAL officers are planning all-star shows at Hedrick Junior High school gym here with bouts set ten tatively for March and April. The Police Athletic league gym will be open Monday through Thursday nights when activity resumes in Jan uary. Membership is free to boys. Zack is looking for several heavier weight boxers to round out a full squad to take to Portland. Anyone wishing to take part in the coming shows, or wishing to learn how to box may contact Zack at the gym on the second floor above the Medford Health club. Moyer-Ortega Match Okehed By Ring Group New' York -fiJPD- The New York state athletic commis sion Friday : approved a 10 round welterweight bout on Jan. 2 at Madison Square Garden between young Denny Moyer of Portland, Ore., and veteran Gaspar Ortega of Mexico. Approval was given at the Commission's monthly meet ing. All bouts in New York state must be approved by the commission. The commission could have limited the bout to eight rounds because the unbeaten Moyer is under 20 years of age. Red Raiders Pound Chico; Drop Scrap With Willamette U. Areata, Calif. - Southern Oregon college salvaged one of its three games in the Far Western conference basket ball tournament by dumping Chico State college 73 to 57 on Saturday afternoon. The Red Raiders of Ash land, Ore., had lost to Willa mette 70 to 60 on Friday after a Thursday defeat at the hands of University of Neva da 62 to 57.- Southern Oregon on Satur day used its hotter shooting and the foul, shots which re sulted from Chico's pressing defense to earn the victory. The Wildcats of Chico con trolled the backboards. Punk Bidding put Southern Oregon ahead to stay with 23i minutes left in the first half. His shot made the score 20 to 18 and the Raiders wid ened to 29 to 22 by the mid way buzzer.
