Christmas stockings were given to every patient in the hospital by the Salvation Army, the hospital reported. Lights Stolen-Two thefts of outdoor Christmas lights were reported to Medford police Friday morning. Both cases reportedly occurred the night before, from addresses just a few blocks apart. Dorothy Marie Watkins, 701 West Jackson st., said ten lights with a total value of ?2 were taken from a bush .in her front yard. Donna Gayel De Voe," 823 Pennsylvania ave., said four lights worth 25 cents apiece were taken from the front porch at that address. aries GEORGE T. COOK Ashland - Funeral services for George Theodore Cook, 84, of 153 Granite St., Ashland, will be held Tuesday, Dec. 23, at 11 ajn. at Litwiller's Moun tain View chapel, Ashland. Mr. Cook was killed Dec. 17 while walking on the highway south of Phoenix. , The Ashland Masonic lodge, will be in charge of the fun eral service. Interment will be in Mountain View cemtery. TWILA DIZICK Funeral services for Twila Dizick, Gibbon rd., Central Point, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Galen G. Dizick, will be held in Conger-Morris Fun eral Some Monday at 1 p.m. The Rev. Raymond W. Hum of the Church of the Nazarene will officiate. Committal will be in Siskiyou Memorial park. Twila Dizick was born July 13, 1958. Worst Brush Fire Now Under Control San Juan Capistrano, Calif. -d'PD-Firefighters Friday night brought under control Cali fornia's worst brush fire of the year after an intensive six-day battle. Richard Johnson, U.S. for est Service fire prevention of-J iicer, caiiea tne maze, wnicn blackened more .than . 100 square miles of brush, "one of the granddaddies of all times." Official control was announ ced at 8 p.m. Friday night aft er a crew of 2,700 men halted the advance of several ma jor hot spots along the nor thern perimeter. Johnson said, however, that scouting parties would be held in the area until the first substantial rainfall. Nineteen homes and cabins were destroyed in the : blaze which consumed an average of 500 acres of dry N under growth and timber an hour. Joe Adams, a ranger from Prescott National Forest, Ariz., was the only fatality re ported. He was killed Thurs day when he was leading a hotshot crew of Hopi Indians on a scouting mission and a sudden shift of winds envel oped him in flames, the For est Service reported. Head-On Collision Kills Lebanon Man Corvallis (LTD A head-on collision 11 miles south of here Saturday afternoon claimed the life of John Paul Wirth, 42, of Lebanon, and injured three other persons, one of them critically. - Marlin E. Redfield, 66, Eu gene, was listed in critical ! condition at a uorvaius nos- pital. Less seriously hurt were Harry W. Weaver, 20, and his wife Loretta May, 21, both of Eugene. State Policeman Jay Crooks said the Weavers and Red fields apparently were travel ing south and Wirth north when the accident occurred. Wirth was en route to Cor vallis to get his wife who had been staying with her mother, Crooks said. Wirth, a salesman "for the Gross Logging Supply com pany of Eugene, died in a Corvallis hospital about one hour after the collision. Team Manager's Daughter Injured Judy Ann Gordon 18, of 1809 Lindero rd., Sacramento, Calif., daughter cf Joe Gor don, manager of the Cleve land Indians baseball team, was reported injured in a traf fic accident a half mile north of the Big Y store Saturday morning, Medford police said. Medford Ambulance attend ants said the girl identified herself as the daughter of the famed second baseman and now baseball manager. She was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for cuts and released. The injuries resulted in a three-car rear-end collision on the North Pacific highway, police said. The girl was a passenger in a car driven by Jerad Claude Ede, Natana, Calif., Medford city police said. Richard Bihlmaier, 1252 Beach st., Eugene, a German exchange student, also was riding in the Ede car, and was treated for injuries. A car driven - by Cecil Clair Stater, 1242 Bens lane, Medford, had stopped to make a left turn off the highway, police said. The car in which Miss Gordon was riding stop ped behind him when it was struck by a car driven by Ford Denver Ralph Ladd, 1121 Pinecroft st., Medford. The force of the collision drove the Ede car into the first car, city police said. Ladd was also taken to the hospital for treatment. New County, City Maps Available ! The Jackson County Cham ber of Commerce last week published 10,000 copies of a new and revised city and county map. The maps show new city boundaries to include recent annexations and includes a street directory, information about the city and county, and an outline map showing coun ty's location in relation to the other five western states. The chamber said it felt a new 1 map was needed, not only to bring up to date re cent changes for local use, but also to be ready for in creased demand for, a current map during the Centennial year. The maps are blue and black on white. Incorporated cities are shown in light blue with rivers and lages a dark blue. Chamber officials said the map was published at cost and are available at 15 cents each in lots of 25 or more. They will cost 25 cents per copy individually. Wheeler Sentenced For Theft, Abduction Portland -flJPD- John Mar shall Wheeler, 43, of Port land, Friday was sentenced to five years in the state prison for unarmed robbery and the abduction of a service station attendant Oct. 12. Earl's service station in Northeast Portland was rob bed of $25 and the attendant, Jerry C. Clayton, was forced to ride with Wheeler in a get away car before Clayton was released. Moore, route 1, Eagle Point, recently completed the car rier equipment repair course at the Army's southeastern signal school, Ft. Gordon, Ga. A 1952 graduate of Eagle Point High school, he entered the service in June, 1953. COMPLETES TRAINING Airman Harold V. Cady. son of Harold T. Cady of route 1, Willows. Calif., has completed Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force base, Tex. He has been selected to attend the tech nical training course for Air craft , Mechanic at Sheppard AFB, Tex. Airman Cady at tended Milo Academy at Milo, Ore. While in the Medford area, Cady lived wifh Mr. and Mrs. Roy Clark. Cousins Sentenced For Burglary Try La Grande - (UPD - Two cou sins, Alonzo William and Eli jah Dean DeClue, were sen tenced to two years each in the Oregon state prison Fri day by Circuit Judge W. F. Brownton after confessing to an attempted burglary last month. The two cousins, both from La Grande, were arrested Thursday by La Grande city police and admitted attempt ing to rob the Angel Metso pulous grocery store Nov. 19. Alonzo, 20, and Elijah, 21, told police they entered the store with a loaded .38 re volver and demanded money. The two were scared off by Metsopulos and his wife after the man told the DeClues he didn't know how much mon ey was in the store and his wife went to a back room to check. The four picked are Erik S. Ronhovde, a student at Harvard university from Mis soula, Montana; Bryce E. Nel son from Boise, Idaho, and also at Harvard; Rodger Young from Sacramento, Cal ifornia, a student at Reed col lege; and Cadet Bradley Hos mer of the Air Force Acad emy, representing North Da kota. The four were picked by the committee from a field of 12 representing six district states Washington. Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and North Dakota. The committee was headed by Benjamin H. Kizer of Spo kane. There are seven other selection committees across the nation, which will each make a selection of four boys to receive the Rhodes schol arship a total of 32 will receive the honor in this coun try. The boys will get an auto matic two year scholarship, and possibly three years of study at Oxford. E levator Shaft Fall Proves Fatal to Man Portland (UPD Jim Smith, 65, Portland, died in a hos pital here Saturday of injur ies suffered Friday night when he fell down an eleva tor shaft at the Geneva hotel. Smith was found in the ele vator shaft lying unconscious and police were called. The man had apparently opened the elevator doors on the first floor and stepped into the shaft thinking the eleva tor cage was on the. same level.
