1 6 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Orajon, Friday, December 1 9, 1 958 Limit Extended On Fire Sprinklers The Medford city council last night extended for 12 months the time limit for In stalling basement sprinkler systems as required by muni cipal ordinance. At the same time is stipu lated that the fire chief could require compliance at an earlier date if he determined a hazard existed. The most recent deadline for installa tion was the end of this month. The council took no action n a proposed amendment to the ordinance that would have enlarged the minimum basement space for which sprinkler systems are neces sary. City Manager Robert . A Duff reported that "seven or eight" signs under the Fluhrer building marquee, Main st. and Central ave., have been moved to comply with the city sign ordinance. Approves Sewer The council approved after a public hearing the request for a sanitary sewer on East- over Terrace dr. and a por tion of Hillcrest rd. in the unrecorded Getchell subdivi sion. It also authorized the city manager to call for bids on the sewer, to be opened at 11 a.m., Jan. 8 in the city hall council chambers. A public hearing was call ed for Jan. 15 on rezoning the Nick Gier property on North Pacific highway from single family to light indus trial to permit the operation of a house trailer court and sales agency. The councilmen approved a one-year zoning variance for a Big Y Market billboard on Highway 62. This action was taken on the planning com mission's recommend a t i o n. City Attorney E. Roy Bashaw ine Found Guilty on One Contempt Charge Washington - (DPD - Bernard Goldf ine, 67, gif t-g i v i n g friend of former Presidential Assistant Sherman Adams, was found guilty of contempt In one court case today. He pleaded innocent in another. Federal Judge Charles E. Wyzanski Jr. ruled in Boston that the textile tycoon was in contempt of court when he re fused to submit complete documents ordered in an in' come tax investigation. Moments before, Goldfine appeared here before Federal Judge John J. Sirica and en tered a plea of innocent to contempt of Congress charges stemming from his refusal to give House influence investi gators details on his financial dealings. Ordered by Sirica to stand trial starting March 16, Gold fine posted bond of $1,000 and was escorted to the cell- block downstairs where he was booked and finger printed. He emerged 10 min utes later, appearing tired but smiling. The millionaire industral ist's private secretary, Miss Mildred Raperman, was con victed with him in the Boston tax case. Their three-day trial ended Thursday. Wyzanski ordered both to appear in his court Monday for sentencing. Penalties for criminal contempt are not established by law and are left to the judge's discretion. If convicted on the con tempt of Congress charges here, Goldfine faces a maxi mum sentence of an $18,000 fine and 18 years in prison. said no public hearing was necessary or customary in such a case. The councilmen also award ed bids on new radio equip ment for the city police de partment and the civil de fense agency. A public hearing on a sani tary sewer for Temple dr. was continued to the next meeting pending acquirement of rights of way for this pro posed street. Two matters pertaining to Medford airport were consid ered. The councilmen approv ed a lease for West Coast air lines to accommodate a jet fuel storage and supply facili ty. They approved another lease to the Civil Air Patrol to erect a building adjoining its present facilities west of Biddle rd. A lease request from Lyle Estelle to establish an air taxi chartering service and air plane brokerage office in the terminal building was report edly withdrawn before the meeting. The council approved sale of a narrow strip of land on Newtown st. to Lena Pearl Cowin, owner of adjoining property, for $100. To Consider Easement It delayed for further con sideration the granting of an easement to the California Oregon Power company for four distribution poles orig inally thought to be on land belonging to Pinnacle Or chards but since proven to be on land belonging to the city. The council approved an agreement with Earhart Park company for improvement of Siskiyou blvd. between For tune dr. and the I.O.O.F. cemetery. This street being considered arterial, the width is to be 44 feet. The city is to pay the difference between the 36 feet normally required of private developers and the total width desired. The work is to be completed by Dec. 31, 1959. Plans and specifications for a sanitary sewer along South Riverside ave. between Ear hart st. and Stewart ave. were authorized, and adopted. The council adopted plans and specifications for paying the extension of Columbus ave. between Jackson st. and McAndrews rd., and for a sanitary sewer on Eastwood dr. from Siskiyou blvd. and Fortune dr. The Columbus ave. extension is to -run be tween the proposed U.S. Army Reserve center and the pro posed municipal park and swimming pool area. This land was until recently the site of the Jackson County Housing authority low - cost dwelling unit. Blind Man's Dog Dies of Poisoning Sandy, Ore.-tt!PD-Jistice of the Peace George Howeiler today offered a $100 reward for the identity of the person who poisoned Mr. Chips, his black and white fox terrier. Howeiler said he obtained the dog shortly after losing his sight about 13 years ago. He said the dog died Wednes day of s'trychnine poisoning. Howeiler said that although the dog was not a guide dog, he was a faithful companion.
