The accident occurred at Station Romeo, 2,400 miles west of San Francisco and about halfway between Ha waii and the Aleutian Islands. The Gresham, from Alame da, Calif., had arrived to re lieve the cutter Klamath, from Seattle, Wash. The wave struck while mail was being passed between the. vessels. Other waves had been run ning about 19 feet high, with wind of 40 miles an hour. The Gresham was ordered to continue to Midway Island with the injured men, while the Klamath remained on station. Agent Denies Aiding Chessman Richmond, Ind. -(UPD- Liter ary agent Joseph Longstreph today he helped a best-selling convict-author smuggle a manuscript from his death row cell. Longstreph was arrested here Wednesday on a Calif ornia warrant charging he conspired to get a novel by Caryl Chessman to a New York publishing firm. Named in the same indict ment were George "Davis, ex attorney for Chessman, and the publishing house Prentice Hall Publishing So.. . "Ridiculous," Longstreph said when arrested. He added he had not been in California since 1954 when he helped Chessman prepare his first novel, "Cell 2455 Death Row." That novel, written in Chessman's San Quentin Pris on cell, described the early life of the notorious "red light" bandit and detailed the events that led to his 1948 death conviction on 17 counts of robbery, kidnapping," rape and sex perversion. Tokyo-(UPD - Asia saw the steady drift toward Commun ism checked slightly in 1958 but may see the pendulum swing back somewhat to the left again in 1959. Oneof Asia's biggest stories next year though, may involve Communism only indirectly. Its focal point would be a vast, primitive land known variously as Western New Guinea or West Irian. Claim ed by both Indonesia and the Netherlands, it is freighted with an explosive potential involving both East and -West. These other headlines are possible for Asia in 1959: Red China Aims New Cam paign at Formosa Singapore Swings io the Left Nehru Steps Aside in India Japan's Prime Minister Ki shi Resigns New Anti-Communist Pact Launched The West had its eyes pin ned on the Formosa Straits for the last half of 1958 and buildup of tension over New Guinea. The 159,375 square miles of jungle and mountain, home of fewer than 1,000,000 persons, is now administered by the Dutch. President Sukarno of Indonesia claims the land as his under the 1949 independ ence agreement with the Neth erlands. And government spokesmen have said Indones ia will invade, if necessary, to back up its claims. Support Pledged The Dutch are said to have only a half-heart for defend ing what so far has been a deficit area (although high hopes are held for future de velopment), but Australia, which administers the eastern half of New Guinea, has let it be known it not only will back the Dutch to the end, but even might oppose any Indo nesian military adventure by itself if need be. What frightens many ob servers is the possibility that in case of any serious fight ing, Sukarno . undoubtedly could count on Red Chinese and Russian support just as he got-economic and logistic support during this year's ill fated rebellion in Sumatra and the Celebes. Elsewhere in the Far East, the year 1958 saw military men step in and check the tide of Communism in Pak istan, Burma and Thailand even if at the cost of de mocracy as it is practiced in the West. Singapore to Elect But early next year, Singa pore will elect its first self government and the leftists are seen certain to gain con siderable strength, in part at least, to squabbling among middle-of-the-road factions. Also in this southeast Asia complex, the Communists seem to be making slow but steady advances in Laos, Cam- Ohio is almost square, its borders measuring about 200 miles each. Personalities may change on the 'Asian scene, too. Nehru May Step Down India's Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru has been talking of stepping, down and devoting his energies to re organizing the Congress Party. Even if he rides out the current government crisis, there's a good possibility Ja pan's Prime ' .Minister No bosuke Kishi. may resign sometime hefore next spring. The trouble is that there are no strong, active leaders in the Japananese Conservative Party. As a long shot, very long, it's possible former strongman - premier Shigeru Yoshida might be coaxed out of retirement." And hv Korea, Syngman Rhee is 83-strong and hearty but still 83.
