First step, of course, is to buy a fresh tree-one that won't drop its needles when you move or shake it. As soon as the tree is brought home, throw cold water all over it, says Charles Eoss, OSC farm forestry spe cialist. Then recut the stem with a new diagonal cut at least an inch above the old cut to open pores for drawing up water. - Set the tree in water and keep it in a cool shady place until it is brought indoors for trimming. The first day a 5 to 6-foot tree is placed in water, it may take up a quart of water. Ross explains. After that the water needs replen ishing daily because the tree may take up a cup of water every day in a warm room. Plain Water Best Many chemicals have been . tried for fire-proofing trees, Even substances like sugar, aspirin, or fruit acids have been used in water for this purpose. None has proved as effective as plain water, which keeps the tree natural ly moist, report U. S. depart ment of agriculture research ers. Good location for a Christ mas tree is in the cool part of the room, away from radi ators, fireplace, radio, TV set, or other source of heat. Ross also cautions not to place the tree in doorways or other lo cations that could block exit if fire should occur. Plan the location before you select the tree. Though most people want a symmetrical tree, a flat-sided tree may be more attractive and conven ient in a small room because it will fit against a wall. Such a tree will probably sell for less than a perfectly shaped tree. Teamster Funds Paid Beck's Bills, Contractor Says Tacoma, Wash.-rtJPD- Team sters Union funds were used to pay Dave Beck's bills for construction work, a Seattle contractor testified here Wednesday. Contractor John Lindsay said he received a total of $193,000 in union funds from Beck during the years 1948 1952. The money came from the Western Conference of Teamsters and the Joint Coun cil 28 Building Association fund. Lindsay said Beck told him he (Beck) wouid "reimburse the teamsters later." Assistant U.S. Attorney Kinsey James asked Lindsay if the word "loan" was used in these transactions. "No," replied Lindsay. Beck, former president of the Teamsters Union, is being tried on charges of evading $240,000 in income taxes dur ing the years 1950-1953. Swim Pool Included Lindsay said that all of the money he received from Beck was used to pay bills pertaining to construction of some kind, including land scaping, installation of a swimming at Beck's residence, and even constructing a fence around a commercial parking lot in which Beck had an in terest. Lindsav constructed -or su pervised construction of most of the 10 dwellings situated in Back's exclusive Sheridan Beach "compound" in Seattle. He also performed Wmerous construction and alteration jobs for the Teamsters Union in Seattle and Olympia, Wash. Medford Woman Named to Honorary Eugene-A Medford woman, Marjorie Blind was recently initiated into Pi Lambda The ta, national women's educa tional honorary, a University of Oregon spokesman said. Miss Blind, a senior in busi ness education, is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Blind of 127 Valley View dr., Medford. The purpose of the honor ary is the maintenance of the highest standards of scholar ship, professional preparation and -the fostering of profes sional spirit and fellowship among women who plan to en ter the teaching field, the spokesman explained.
