t - Portland Girl, 18, Confesses To Burglaries Portland -(UPC- Police said today Sandra Kay Oswalt, 18, Portland, has confessed to six burglaries, including two where she "cased" safes for a male companion. But her to tal take, over a three-week period, aside from food, beer and cigarettes, totalled only $40. The girl was arrested Wednesday by County Detec tives Clyde Lowry and George Minielly. Sheriffs deputies earlier, ar rested James Dennis Ryan, 21, Portland, and identified him as Sandra's accomplice. Ryan was arrested at the scene of an. attempted safe stealing which police said Sandra had "cased. She Wanted Money The officers said the slen der teen-ager explained "I wanted' some money." They said she told them that Ryan tried to talk her out of it. Detectives said Sandra ad mitted participating in three burglaries in Portland, two in the county and one in Clack amas county. They said she admitted breaking into a market but she found the safe set in con crete, so she left, after taking two cartons of cigarettes. Po lice quoted her as saying she later threw them along a road side she didn't like the brand. Smashed Glass Door Early Monday, she told po lice, she smashed a door glass at another market. Determin ing that the safe could be moved, she said she left and informed Ryan, taking with her cigarettes, canned ham and beer. Ryan later was ar rested by deputies inside the store. Deputies went to the scene after someone reported the door glass broken. Lowry said the Clackamas county burglary involved a break-in at a store near Mo-lalla. Railroad Plans To Combine Trains Chicago - (UPD - The City of Denver and City of Portland streamliners will be combin ed into a nngl train during the off-season, the Uni6n Pa cific Railroad announced to day. The railway said lack of passenger patronage dictated the merger, which becomes effective Jan. 11. The trains will run separately during the summer tourist season. Wilderness Bill Gets Opposition Southern Oregon Conserva tion and Tree Farm associa tion has submitted a brief in opposition to the proposed Wilderness area bill, accord ing to Robert F. Kline, asso ciation president. The proposal to restore the ever more populous west to the primeval grandeur that only the Indians knew before the white man's coming is as impractical as it is idealistic, the brief stated. The brief is addressed to Sen. James E. Murray, chairman of the com mittee on interior and insular affairs. The proposed legislation overrides the multiple use concept upon which the na tional forest system was estab lished, the brief stated. Ac cess roads are needed into the forests for proper timber management and enhance ment of the tourist trade. However, the bill would pro hibit them, it was pointed out. Limiting the timber yield through establishment of wil derness areas would give Southern Oregon residents a reduced payroll and increased tax burden, the brief stated further. The wilderness bill would also do nothing to en hance development of water use and water power, it was pointed out. Icy Spots, Fog Mar Ore. Highway Travel Salem-fllPD-The State High way Department said icy spots were on the highway at Green Springs, Prospect and San tiam Pass today, but else where in Oregon pavements were bare. One was charged with embezzlement while the other was for a Dyer act vio lation. Mrs. Lois Lacy Sauer, San Francisco, was arrested Wed nesday morning in Central Point on a warrant charging her with embezzlement of government property. Today James Robert Young, 65, transient, was arrested in the valley on a warrant is sued in New Orleans, La., March. 1956. for interstate transportation of a stolen mo tor vehicle. He is scheduled to be ar raigned this afternoon or Fri day morning. Mrs. Sauer, who was visit ing in the valley at the time of her arrest, was a cashier at a U.S. Naw installation in San Francisco, it was re ported. Officials said that she had been released from her job following an audit of her accounts. Mrs. Sauer was arraigned Mayor Will Talk Air Study Plan To City Council Medford Mayor John W. Snider confirmed his inten tions today to consider fur ther a city-state joint study of local air conditions at the city council meeting tonight at 7:30 o'clock in city hall. He said he plans to com ment at the meeting on the letter received recently from the Oregon State Air Pollu tion authority. This letter, re porting on results of a token study conducted here early in October, recommends "addi tional sampling and field sur veys on a joint basis to obtain more complete information. "It cannot be concluded at this time that an area-wide pollution problem exists in the city," the report states, "but the sample data indicates the presence of local nuisance conditions." Mayor Snider has said he considers the possible study an administrative matter, with details to be worked out by City Manager Robert A. Duff. Other subjects up for con sideration at tonight's coun cil meeting include amending the ordinance requiring base ment sprinkler systems, and adopting plans and specifica tions for extending Columbus ave. from Jackson st. to Mo Andrews rd. through the Jackson County Housing au thority area and for a sanitary sewer along South Riverside ave. from Earhart st. to Stew art ave. A public hearing on a sani tary sewer for Eastover Ter ract dr. and a portion of Hill crest rd. in the unrecorded Getchell subdivision is on the agenda. Resignations submitted , by two members of the city plan ning commission, County Judge-elect Earl Miller and Hugh Coleman, are also to be considered tonight, Mayor 'Snider said. j The matter of authorizing the city to sell a thin strip of land on Newtown st. to the owner of adjacent property for $100 is also slated. Ashland Court Hears Charges On Vandalism Ashland-Doyle M. Benson, 18, of Ashland, was fined and given a jail sentence in Ash land municipal court Tues day for damages done to the Lincoln statue in Lithia park on Nov. 4. Municipal Court Judge P. H. Stansbury sentenced the youth to 30 days in jail and fined him $200. He was order ed also to pay $314 for dam ages done to the statue. . Benson admitted that he and a companion, who is no longer an Ashland resident, pushed the heavy statue off its base on Nov. 4. The head was broken off. A 17-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl, both of Ashland, were brought before Ashland municipal court Tuesday on charges of smearing and paint ing cars Oct. 28 in the city. Total damages from the van dalism was estimated at $195. The 17-year-old girl, who holds a job, has been restrict ed to her home on week ends. The 14-year-old girl is restrict ed to her home all hours when not attending school. The girls were directed also to pay for damages done to the cars. In a third case, a 16-year-old boy was fined $52.50 for damaging an auto in an Ash land parking lot. The judge ordered him to pay for the estimated $150 in damages. before U.S. Commissioner Frank J. Van Dyke Wed nesday. Both persons were lodged in the Jackson county jail. Mrs. Sauer will be returned to San Francisco, it was re ported.
