The discussion and meeting will be conducted by girls of the senior Tri-Y. Re freshments will be served. Tri Hi-Y is a high school club organization, sponsored by the Young Men's Christian association, whose stated pur pose is "to create, maintain and extend throughout the home, school and community high standards of Christian character." 4 All but eight states restrict the sale of fireworks. Stories Conflict In Federal Income Tax Trial of Beck Big Cars Defended By Detroit Mayor In LA. Smog Fight Tacoma-JlTt-Conflicting tes timony was an issue for the first time today in the govern ment's income tax evasion trial against Dave Beck. Robert L. Graham, Beck's former administrative assist ant, testified Tuesday that the missing records of two union funds had been removed from a bookkeeping office in the Seattle Teamsters hall "for the purpose of' making an audit." Monday, Donald McDonald, a bookkeeper, testified the records had been taken from his office for the purpose of giving him more office space. These records have been missing since Internal Reve nue agents began their inves tigation of Beck in 1954. Graham said in January of 1954 he had gone to McDon ald's office and told him to "gather up the books and rec ords of the Western Confer ence general fund and the building association and bring them to his (Graham's) office. ( "I told him I wanted every thing necessary for an audit," Graham said. U. S. District Judge George H. Boldt interrupted - Gra ham's testimony and asked him to "think over very care fully" what he had said re garding the purpose for re moving the records from Mc Donald's office. Boldt emphasized that Gra ham's answer would be very important. Graham reiterated his previous statement. Later Boldt said "the court's ques tion was made with a very definite purpose in mind." Placed in Boxes Graham said that he took the records from his desk, placed them in cardboard boxes and personally carried them to the basement and placed them in a storeroom vault. An hour or two later, Gra ham added, he saw the build ing custodian and told him to "clean out" the storeroom. "I never saw them again," Graham said. "I assumed they were destroyed." McDonald testified that he had seen boxes with the rec ords in them several days after Graham" had removed them to the basement. Miriani stepped into Los Angeles' smog problem today with a defense of the auto in dustry and Detroit's big cars. Miriani replied to a state ment by Los Angeles Mayor Norris Poulson who called for a consumer boycott of big cars because they cause too much smog. ' Poulson told a Washington news conference Monday he is going to buy a Rambler to replace his Cadillac and urged others to change to small cars to force the auto industry to reduce harmful effects of ex haust gases. Big cars produce more fumes than little cars and auto exhaust is the main cause of Los Angeles' smog, he ex plained. Miriani asked the Los An geles mayor in a tongue-in-cheek telegram to consider what would happen to Califor nia's economy if Michigan boycotted all that is big in California. (UPD A case against a father whose 15-year-old daughter is not attending high school was dismissed in Justice Court Tuesday "in the interests of justice." Sharyn Schneider and her sister, Shirley, 21, run a gro cery store which supports their family of seven. The fa ther, Clarence Schneider, was brought into court for failure to comply with the state's compulsory school attendance law. School officials agreed to find a special system of night study, correspondence courses or tutoring to further the girl's formal education while she helps run the store. The father suffered a heart attack several years ago. (UPD - Sixteen-year-old Carl Eder's life is now in the hands of a ju venile judge. The lanky runaway from New York state who admitted slayng the wfe and four small children of a man who had befriended him appeared in municipal court Tuesday for arraignment, and had his case assigned to a juvenile judge. The judge now must decide whether the youth should stand trial on murder charges as an adult - which could mean the gas chamber if he is convicted. Juvenile Trial Alternative The judge also has the al ternative of ruing that Eder should be tried as a juvenile, which would mean that the maximum sentence he could receive for the mass slayings would be life imprisonment. Eder was captured by an off-duty policeman Monday night, just three days after he admitted fatally shooting Mrs. Lois Pendergast, 37, and slashing the throats of her three sons and a daughter, aged 2 to 9. Two of the chil dren also had been disem bowled. ' Thomas Pendergast, 39, a deeply religious aircraft plant worker, discovered the bodies in his home Friday. Pendergast, who said he met Eder six weeks before the slayings and decided to allow the youth to live in his home "to salvage his soul," said Monday after Eder was cap tured in San Diego, about 12 miles from here: "I pray that God will take mercy on him." 'Flipped My Lid' Eder's explanation of why he went on his wild killing rampage was, "I guess I just flipped my lid." The youth from Irondequoit, N. Y., sobbed as he led police back to the scene of the slaughter and reconstructed the slayings one by one. Burial services for the vic tims were to be private and Pendergast asked reporters not to question him about the time or place of the last rites. Logging, Pickup Trucks in Crash A logging truck and a pick up truck collided yesterday afternoon near Prospect state police reported today. Police said the accident oc curred near the Wildwood store on Highway 62 in the Prospect area about 4 p.m. A logging truck and trailer driven by Earnest Joe Taylor, 47, of 543 Grand ave., Central Point, was heading west on Highway 62 when the driver saw a car driven by Frank Wilbur Simmons, 64, Star route, Trail, pull out of a driveway onto the highway to go west. Taylor told officers he started to pass the pickup truck when it made a left turn into the Wildwood store as he pulled alongside. The truck was struck by the car and went off onto the shoulder and into a ditch, where it tipped over on its left side and lost its load of logs. The driver of the car was thrown out onto the high way but was apparently unin jured, state police said. Sim mons told officers he did not see the truck. Both vehicles were extensively damaged, police said. as California s economy de pends upon motion pictures." C. M. O' Connell said today his investi gation of juvenile delin quency in metropolitan areas of Washington showed use of liquor had a "strong and pos itive" influence on youth mis behavior. O'Connell said his staff found that in many instances, delinquent acts were precipi tated by use of alcohol and that "there appears to be no problem for the juvenile in obtaining liquor if he so de sires." The attorney general re leased a report to the Legis lature in which he made var ious recommendations for law changes to combat delin quency. Proposals included a recommendation made last week that driving privileges be taken from 16 and 17 year olds. There was no specific recommendation on the liquor problem, but the attorney general recommended stricter enforcement of laws relating to contributing to delinquency of a minor. O'Connell said that the state's delinquency rate was increasing at a substantially higher level than the national average.
