He said he had told the rectory housekeeper to call the fire department, but was unsure whether or not she had done so. Raymond was credited with rescuing many of the children from the fire, by dashing into the blazing building several times. At right is Coroner McCarron. WONT GIVE UP Mrs. Ella Williams, 55-year-old widow evicted from her home in Norton, Va., stands amid her household furnishings on the lawn outside her ex-home. Since the eviction, Mrs. Williams has spent four nights and days outside in sub-freezing temperatures, refusing to go anywhere else. The house was sold by court order to settle debts against her. Back Stairs: Identification Passes By MERRIMAN SMITH UPI WhiU House Reporter Washington-dTD-Back stairs at the White House: The White House is in the process of preparing new identification passes for all members of the executive staff, plus other government officials, reporters, photog raphers and broadcasting per sonnel entitled to access to the executive mansion. One thing new about the passes is that the identifica tion pictures are larger than usual and are made in full , color. In fact, the Secret Service has dropped the re quirement that White House passes carry the thumbprint on the bearer because the color photographs are regard ed as quicker, more positive identification than fingerprints. The color pictures are being made in an improvised por trait studio in the executive office building next door to the White House. The East man Kodak Co. technicians manning the color camera say they ve noticed one traceable result of the decision to record the employees in living color. A noticeable number of girls are putting on blue or green eye shadow just before facing the camera. With or without eye shad ow, the Secret Service likes the idea of identification by color photograph. Laminated between layers of plastic, the new pictures are expected to stand up as long as the con ventional black and white which have been in use on White House credentials since the early days of World War II. Just before the British king and queen visited Washington that year, the need arose for determining who should be permitted within the building Actually, the public had free access to the White House grounds until the time of Pearl Harbor. Until war changed the entire concept of security, government work ers and department store em ployees used the grounds as an east-west short cut, stream ing by beneath the windows where the President was con ducting the affairs of state. War, however, closed the gates and led to an ironclad system of personal identifica tion. The new color passes would seem to answer all questions with the possible ex- ception-what happens if a girl changes the shade of her eye shadow? Will it invalidate her pass? Ladies Pleased The ladies are particularly pleased by the new passes which will be distributed after the first of the year. The old passes included, along with a thumbprint, the bearer's age and weight. Not so with the new pass, just name, address and signature. No damning proof of a lady's age or tonnage. University Has 'ID' Card System Iowa City, Iowa - (UPD - Stu dents at the State University of Iowa are putting to good use this year a new time-sav ing "I.O." card system which has been described as "unique" among major educa tional institutions. Registrar Ted McCarrel said the idea is to expedite services to students, and to increase the accuracy and ef ficiency of the university's recording and filing system The plastic black and gold card bears the students sig nature and is embossed with his name and "I.D." number. It resembles a department store charge plate and is is sued in much the same man ner. Various offices and depart ments on campus have "hand registers" similar to those used in stores where the cus tomer's name is transferred from his credit card to the firm's billing form. For .university purposes, this procedure is used for re cording services a student might receive at the library, the dental clinic, student health center, athletic depart ment, and so on. There are about 5,000 mink farmers in the U. S. I( Police Patrol Construction Job Niagara Falls, N. Y.-IUPD-A police force stationed a few miles outside this city has only a small corrugated metal shack for headquarters. Yet it is larger than the law en forcement agencies of most villages around the country. Capt. M. Alvin Johnson, a veteran of 27 years in police and fire service, heads a 64 man force on duty at the giant Niagara power project now under construction. Johnson said his men's pri mary job is "to enforce safety rules, prevent uninvited guests from invading con struction areas and prevent thefts and pilferage of the mil lions of dollars worth of equipment and material being used here." The unusual police force has two patrol cars and also operates the project ambu lance when necessary. Active Club Plans Party A New Year's Eve party is planned for members of the Medford Active club, a spokes man said today. . Plans are to hold it at the Rogue Riviera. Details will be given during the next Active club meeting, it was explained. Candidates for the coming election include Dick Nelson for president, Jim Cox for vice president, Joe Sayres for secretary, Paul Jenny for trea surer, Bob Trout for historian, Gordon Casey for activator and Jack Cummings and Dick Nelson for board members. Nominations will be received from the floor also. Space Soldier Puts New Face On Air Defense Offutt AFB, Neb. CPD That space-age soldier, the "missile man," has been with the Strategic Air Command for nearly a year now. His coming has put a. brand new face on the air arm of .America's defense. SAC's mission is still to maintain the mighty bomber force aimed at discouraging attack on -the United States, a bomber force large enough to wipe out much of Russia Missiles Added Meanwhile, a glistening and powerful complement of missiles has been added to SAC's array of potential wea pons. SAC's job is to train and maintain crews to fire the intercontinental and inter mediate ballistic missiles. Construction was begun at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo., to prepare it as, the nation's first ICBM base, Other launching sites were marked off around Offutt, Fairchild AFB, Wash., and Forbes AFB, Kan. Home of Snark Lowry AFB, Colo., became a Titan ICBM base and Prew que Isle AFB, Maine, was planned as the home of a squadron of Snark ICM's. Vandcnberg AFB, Calif., took -on British Royal Air Force crews for training in operating the Atlas ICBM and the Department of Defense shipped a supply of the suc cessful missiles to England And defense officials flew to Italy recently to discuss de ployment of an unannounced IRBM there. Other U. S. launching sites will be set up as the SAC mis sile arsenal continues to grow. California leads the states in turkey production. Two Injured in Trailer Blast Newberg, Ore. - (UPD Two deaf mutes were injured Sun day when an explosion and fire wrecked a trailer house near Tigard. V Mrs. Rita Mount, about 45, suffered burns, bruises and shock. Robert D. Monroe, about 35, suffered burns about the hands and face. Cause of the explosion wasn't immediately known. District Attorney Francis Link later . of Washington county said Monroe was held under $5000 bail on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. He said the charge resulted from alleged threats made with a knife against Donald Wyatt, Silverton, dur ing an argument at the Mount residence prior to the fire. Police said that Monroe's trailer had been parked on the Mount property. Officers said it was not pos sible to question the two in jured persons immediately be cause both communicate with their hands, which were burn ed. State Patrolman James Bau man said it was possible that gas from a stove had filled the room and was ignited by a lighted match or cigarette. Dancer's doing the reindeer rumba! Josephine and Catherine Wiegman both teach sixth grade classes. They live to gether, . dress alike and be long to the same professional and social organizations. They both graduated from Illinois State Normal university and earned masters' degrees from the University of Illinois. Tom and Tim Hall are the other Dwight faculty twins. But they don't dress alike and they do not live together. Tom is married and has three children. Tim is a bachelor. The brothers were gradu ated from Iowa Wesleyan but then each went his own way. Tom did his graduate work at Illinois Normal; Tim was awarded his master's degree from Southern Illinois Uni versity. Tim is a coach, physical ed ucation instructor and eighth grade social studies teacher at Dwight. Tom is principal of the school.
