The Colts placed eight play ers on offense and defense platoons of the Western di vision of the pro football cir cuit. Baltimore q u a r t e rback Johnny Unitas was named the signal caller of the Western division and Bobby Layne of the Pittsburgh Steelers was chosen quarterback of the Eastern division. The Cleveland Browns and New York Giants had six po sitions apiece and the Los An geles Rams placed five men. The Chicago Bears, the Steel ers and Washington Redskins came up with three each. The Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Cardinals, Detroit Lions, San Francisco Forty Niners and Green Bay Packers had two apiece. The East team backfield consisted of Layne, Ollie Mat- son of the Cardinals, Frank Gifford of the Giants, and Jimmy Brown of the Browns. With Unitas for the West were Jon Arnett of the Rams and Lenny Moore of the Colts, plus fullback Joe Per ry of the Forty Niners. - Coaches, scouts, writers and officials in the two sec tions were consulted by the Sporting News m compila tion of the teams. Offensive line selections on the West team included Bob St. Clair of the Forty Niners at tackle, Del Shofner of the Rams at end, and Duane Put nam of the Rams at guard. Rejection of Soviet Ultimatum On Berlin Made Paris -(UPD A tough Allied stand on West Berlin and re jection of a Communist ulti matum to quit the city or face possible war gave renewed hope today to West Germany that East-West talks' may yet reunite the divided country. The American, British and French foreign ministers met Sunday with the West Ger man foreign minister and is sued a communique reaffirm ing their intention to remain in West Berlin and to have free access to the city -ad vance rejection of any block ade attempt. Week of Meetings The Sunday talks began a week of important NATO meetings. Most important of these is the three-day session of the NATO council opening Tuesday. Today there was a series of lesser meetings in cluding U. S.-Canadian de fense talks. The four ministers did not reply formally to Soviet Pre mier Nikita S. Khrushchev's Thanksgiving day note de manding that West Berlin be turned into a "free city" with all Allied troops withdrawn. But they stated their position in words so clear there could be no doubt of their firm in tentions. The four foreign ministers will meet Tuesday with the entire NATO council of min isters to discuss a reply to Khrushchev. . The first set of flame ceramic' golf irons (marketed by MacGregor was introduced to the golfing world this month. . . - The manufacturer said tests have shown that ceramic coat ed irons have exceptional wearability and a solid "feel" that helps to improve control. The irons are black-faced and banded by chrome, which the maker said makes it easier for the golfer to frame a ball and line up shots. " . Threat of Revolt In Iraq Voiced London - (UPD - Reports to day from Baghdad said there was imminent danger of a Communist-led revolt which might place Iraq, in the Sov iet camp and bring the Middle East to crisis point again. William C. Rountree, assist ant U. S. secretary of state, leaves Cairo today for Bagh dad. Cairo reports said Iraqi Communists were organizing major demonstrations against him. Long Grass Said To Encourage Mold Minneapolis - (UPD - A Uni versity of Minnesota horticul turist has some tips for bring ing your flowers and lawn through the winter in fine shape. C. G. Hard said that if grass is left to grow too long it will encourage snow mold in the spring. Therefore, he said, cut it until it stops growing. As for flowers, Hard said to bring in your geraniums, chrysanthemums and begonias before the first freeze. He sug gested replanting the geran iums indoors and storing other flower bulbs in a cool, dry place. Your roses still come through better if you mound them up with dirt to about a foot around the crown of the plant. Hard recommended spraying them with a fungi cide but not to water them. New Hampshire Has 'Unknown Soldier South Stoddard, N. H. -(UPD - New Hampshire has an "Un known Soldier" all its own. The young Union soldier of the Civil War rests in the Stevens family . lot in the South Stoddard village grave yard where he . was buried more than 90 years ago. There is no official recog nition of his grave other than the' regulation Army marker of the Civil War period an upright slab with "U. S. Soldier" inscribed in a me dallion. In 1864, a young man from this village, Henry H. Stev ens, enlisted in the Union Army. Three weeks later he died of illness at Ft. Schuyl er Military Hospital in New York. The body was returned here, but just before burial a second coffin bearing Stev ens' name arrived at the local railroad station. Both coffins were opened. The second con tained the body of Stevens. The occupant of the first cof fin never was identified. This body also was buried in the family lot. U. S. amateur photogra phers spend $400 million a year.
