8B MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Sunday, December 14, 1958 1 6 Million Feet of Timber Sold by BLM An estimated 16,010,000 board feet of timber was sold recently by the Medford dis trict of the bureau of land management for a total price of $476,122.40. The timber was located in nine tracts, five of which are in Josephine county, two in Jackson county and one each In Klamath and Douglas counties. Prices bid for Douglas fir, which was the major species in seven of the tracts sold, ranged from $21.50 per thou sand board feet for a small salvage sale to $40.05 per thousand board feet. One small salvage tract that was advertised for sale was with drawn prior to the sale. Josephine- Buyers Purchasers of the five tracts In Josephine county included Brown Brothers Lumber Co. of Williams, who purchased a tract containing 2,002,000 board feet in the Williams area for $72,569.25; Getson Mills, Inc., of Grants Pass, who purchased a tract of 8,' 556,000 board feet in the Ga lice area for $244,440.65; Bata Lumber company of Mer lin who purchased 213,000 board feet in the Galice area for $6,441.85; David Wood of Murphy, who purchased 67,000 board feet of salvage timber in the Galice area for $1,995.70; and A. C. Smith Logging company of Wolf Creek who purchased 46,000 board feet of salvage timber in the Trapper's Cabin area for $1,068.50. The last tract was the only one for which there was no competitive bid- A. C. Smith Logging com pany also purchased 99,000 board feet of salvage timber located on West fork of Cow creek in Douglas county. It was purchased for $2,472.30. Jackson Buyers In Jackson county Olson Ross Lumber company of White City purchased a tract containing 1,482,000 board feet in the Prospect area for $46,026.40 and Mt. Fir Lum ber company of Murphy bid $63,718.75 for a tract of 1, 851,000 board feet in the An derson Butte area. The Klamath county tract which contained 1,694,000 board feet located east of the Klamath river near the Oregon-California line was pur chased by Puckett and Sche rer of Klamath Falls for $37,389. On Jan. 15, the first sale of 1959 will be held in the Med ford district. That sale will consist of six tracts contain ing an estimated 16,180,000 board feet, located in north ern Josephine, northwestern Jackson and southern Doug las counties. They will vary in size from a 42,000 board feet salvage sale to a green sale of 9,428,000 board feet. Ad ditional information regard ing the proposed sales may be secured at the office of the district manager in the Med ford city hall. Concert Planned by Crater High School Central Point The Crater High school music department will present its annual winter concert Wednesday, Dec. 17, in the high school gymnasium. The concert will start at 8 p.m. The band, choir, glee club and soloists will participate. Norman Carothers will direct the program, which will in clude sacred and secular se lections. Soloists will be Kerman Library Employs New Assistant Miss Juliana Keiser of West Lawn, Penn., has been em ployed by the Jackson Coun ty library as assistant librar ian in charge of children's services. Miss Keiser will be gradu ated in January from the Kutztown State Teachers col lege in Pennsylvania, and is given favorable recommenda tions by the college director of library education, Nicho las G. Stevens. Miss Keiser will report for duty Feb. 2, 1959, and will gradually assume full charge for service to children, par ents and teachers in the jun ior department of library headquarters. ' The appointment of the new children's librarian, like that of Miss Joyce Marlin, as sisstant librarian in charge of adult services, resulted from nationwide advertising in professional journals, accord ing to Library Director Helen E. Webster, and brings the professional staff of the Jack son County library to three. It is also planned to em ploy the additional part-time service of Mrs. Jane Baker so that reference service may be available to library patrons during at least 46 of the 66 hours the library is open. Public response to this ser vice has far exceeded all ex pectations, Miss Webster reported.
