Jewett, superintend ent of district 6C schools, and Elliott Becken, assistant su perintendent of Medford 549C, discussed their respective school programs and future plans at a meeting of Howard school district patrons Thurs day night, The public meeting, attend ed by about 175 residents of th Howard district, was call ed to obtain information on the districts so residents may participate in an opinion poll being conducted in the How ard district in connection with consolidation. The Jackson County Reor ganization committee has rec ommended that Howard be consolidated with district 6C, which now includes Central Point, Gold Hill and Sams Valley. In the reorganization committee's recommendation also was consolidation of Rogue River and Evans Val ley into district 6C . Express Desire Some residents of Howard district have expressed a de sire to consolidate with Med ford district 549C, and the Howard School District Reor ganization Information com mittee was organized to ob tain information about con solidation. Jewett and Becken pointed out that school curriculums in both districts are similar with the exception that Cra ter High school in district 6C offers vocational agriculture and Medford does not. Med ford offers industrial and com mercial arts courses, which 1 Crater does not, officials noted. Becken and Jewett pointed out that through a coopera tive program, district 6C stu dents wishing to take indus trial or commercial arts may attend Medford High school, and district 549C students who wish vocational agriculture may attend Crater High. Tui tion in both cases is paid by the school district in which the student lives if the stu dent wishes the course offer ed by the other district. Provide Transportation Both school districts pro vide transportation to and from their respective high schools. Medford school district now has an area of 23 square miles, Becken noted. Jewett said there are 250 square miles in district 6C The school districts have agreed that, whether Howard is consolidated with 549C or 6C, students attending high schools in Medford and at Crater will continue to do so, but all students entering high school after consolidation will attend the high school in the district with which Howard is consolidated. Jewett pointed out that dis trict 6C, with the present con struction program, would be able to take care of a normal increase in population for two years. The Medford district, with its construction program, would be able to handle a normal increase in population for approximately six to eight j years. Review Programs The recommended consoli dation of Rogue River, Evans Valley and Howard with dis trict 6C, and Jacksonville, Griffin Creek and Lone Pine with district 549C would nec essitate immediate review of both construction programs, officials pointed out. JJistnct bU is based on eight year elementary schools, and a four year high school, while the Medford district is based on six year, elementary schools, three year junior "high schools and three year high school. Officials pointed out that the Medford district could handle about 350 to 400 more students in the junior high school system, and 400 to 500 more students in the high school with present facilities because of recent construction of additional elementary schools. The Medford district also has purchased a 35-acre tract in the northeast section for an additional high school if needed. Nick Gier, chairman of the Howard information commit tee, pointed out that if How ard district consolidates with Medford, Lone Pine, Jackson ville and Griffin Creek, the assessed valuation would be about $43 million. If the dis trict consolidated with district 6C, Rogue River and Evans Valley, the assessed valuation would be about $15.2 million. Both districts, 6C and 549C, would utilize existing facili ties in the consolidated dis- RCCommends Blood Project Paul H. Bird, administra tive director of the Pacific Northwest regional blood cen ter, American Red Cross, Portland, has commended the staff and blood donors from Jackson county who partici pated in a recent project to provide blood for open-heart surgery in Portland. - Several pints of AB nega tive type blood was collected in various southern Oregon cities for the operation, which was later reported to have been successful. Bird said "the entire com plicated procedure went off without a hitch, thanks to careful planning and prepara tion by everyone in your chapter. Any minor problems that arose were solved with efficiency and dispatch." He expressed the center's thanks to donors, volunteers for the Red Cross, and Red Cross officials here in the project. Jackson county residents who volunteered to donate blood were Mrs. Amelia Cook, Mrs. Lila Elliott, James Hays, Harry Jewett, Mrs. Maude Ziegler, Eric De Place, Fred Wilson, Raymond Graves and Mrs. Maxine Jamison. New Army Recruiter Named for Medford M-Sgt. William J. Power has been assigned ' the new Army recruiting officer in Medford. The Army recruit ing office is located in the Medford post office building. Sergeant Power, who lives at 722 West 14th st., has been in the Army more than 16 j years and is a veteran of the Korean conflict and World War II. He came from Ft. Lewis, Wash., originally. Jerome K. Kuykendall, 51, chairman of the Federal Pow er commission, of Pomeroy, Wash., is one of several pros pects being considered for. a vacant district judgeship for eastern Washington state, in formed sources said Saturday. Kuykendall has been head of the FPC since the Eisen hower administration the gov ernment's power policy in 1953. Last year President Eis enhower reappointed him for another five-year term on the FPC. The Senate confirmed the appointment after a long battle in which northwest senators led an unsuccessful attempt to block KuykendalTi retention in this key post.
