Print plainly NAME, Alert Set for National Guard Salem - A 1 1 AO Oregon Army and Air National Guard units in 38 communi ties will be temporarily mo bilized at home station during the statewide practice alert scheduled for any time now, Maj. Gen. Thomas E. Rilea, Oregon adjutant general has confirmed. The purpose of holding the practice alert, General Rilea explained, is to test the Ore gon National Guard's current alert and mobilization plans and to insure that individual unit alert and mobilization plans are complete and oper ational. In order to obtain maxi mum results from the prac tice alert, the exact date and time of the test will be kept secret until just before the alarm is soundedi The "mobilization order" will be issued from Oregon National Guard headquarters and transmitted to the major national guard commands who will in turn order their subordinate units to tempor arily mobilize at home sta tion. Changing Taste of Trees Would Reduce Damage by Animals San Francisco-flJPD-A Wash ington forester said Thursday that animal damage in the nation's timberlands could be cut in half by changing the taste of trees. William S. Looney, of Shel ton, Wash., told the 49th an nual Western Forestry Con ference that animals have damaged about two million acres of timberland in the Pa cific Northwest. He said rabbits have feast ed on 66,000 acres of seed lings in Washington and Ore gon, deer and elk have browsed on about 60,000 acres, and bears have clawed their way through a million by the National Guard bureau to test the speed with which the National Guard could be mobilized in the event of an emergency. Carl Durham (D-N.C), told a group of businessmen Wednesday the Soviet Union has submarines in the Cape Canaveral area, but he said he didn't know what good it would do them.
