Location of Fish Indicate Pacific Ocean Warming Up San Francisco -UPD- Not long ago an Indian in Juneau, Alaska, landed a fish be had never seen before. It was a white sea bass, rarely found north of San Diego, Calif. At about the same time a warm water albacore tuna and barracuda were spotted off the Washington state coast. And the once-famed "can nery row" of Monterey, Calif., began stirring .this summer with the re-appearance of sardines after several years' absence. All of which points to a dramatic change in the mighty Pacific - it's heating up. At least, its' getting warm er in coastal water stretching from Peru to the Gulf of Al aska. The trend began in the south in 1955 and gradually spread northward until, by late summer of 1957, the wa ter ranged up to eight de grees warmer than the 30 year average. The average in crease in temperature was four degrees. Effects Not Limited Effects of the phenomenon have not been limited to the northward migration of warm Pioneer Roseburg Home to be Moved For Parking Lot ' Roseburg - (UPD - The 100-year-old home of Lillie Lela Moore, located near down town Roseburg, will be moved to make way for a parking lot. " Five local businessmen submitted a high bid of $37,- 775 to the General Services Administration at a public sale Wednesday for the prop erty. The included Emil Ram- berg, president of the Cham ber of Commerce; Hans Hen- sen, automobile dealer; George West, a hardware store owner; Roland West, a jeweler, and L. E. Garrison, manager of the Douglas County State Bank. They said they planned to build a lot to relieve congested downtown conditions. Eisenhower Contacted Mayor Arlo Jackliri recent ly contacted President Eisen however in an effort to get GSA to Dostoone sale of the property in hopes Congress would convert the Moore home into a museum. The Douglas County Historical so ciety had been trying to ac quire the estate so it could be made into a museum. Mrs. Moore named the fed eral government as heir to her property in 1927, some 13 years before she died. The historical group's only recourse now would be rejec tion of bids by GSA because of congressional pressure. 4-H Club News Desert Pegasus - The Desert Pegasus met Saturday, Dec. 6, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dunn. . The meeting was called to order by president Harlin Stinson. We discussed the Christmas party. We decided to have it Dec. 20, at Pogues' barn. Harlin asked for volun teers for the refreshment com mittee. They are Bill Mor gan, Regina Krambeal, Vickie Voughn, Carolyn Hackney, Shirley Six, and Don Arnald. The club drew names for the Christmas party. .- There was a skating party Nov. 22, at Ashland Skate way. Harlin gave a report on it. Mr. Dunn gave a discus sion on horse judging and also talked with Jie first year members. -- The next meeting will be Jan. S at the Dunn ranch.. Some scientists be lieve the warmth of the ocean has resulted in increased rain fall and higher temperatures on land. Dr. Robert C. Miller, direc tor of the California Academy of Sciences here, also pointed out that on the western edge of the Pacific the tropical rainy season lasted almost six weeks longer than usual; Ha waii had its first recorded hurricane and at Point Bar row, Alaska, the ice went out on July 1 last year, the ear liest date in history. What's the reason for the warm-up? Miller believes the temper ature of the water depends good deal on the strength of the prevailing northwesterly winds. , "wnen tnese winds are strong they speed up the Cali fornia current and the upwel- ling of cold water from the ocean bottom, he said. "If the winds slow down there is less upwelling and the water is warmer along the coast, usual in the past few years." Winds have been lighter than usual in the past few years Smog Accumulation Another possible reason for warmer water is the increas ed accumulation of smog and other carbon dioxide products of combustion in the atmo sphere. inis lorms a blanket in the atmophere that absorbs solar radiation in a green house effect," Miller said "The heat gets in but can't get out. Any increase in solar radiation over the ocean tends to heat up the water. Regardless of the cause, the California fisheries industry has been profoundly affected by the change in the Pacific's temperature. Last year was far and away the best year for Southern California sport fishermen who made record catches of warm water barracuda, yel lowfin tuna, skipjack and dol- phmfish. Many were taken much farther north The warm water -also was credited with a tremendous increase in anchovies off the central California coast. Mar ine biologist Donald P. Abbott of the Hopkins marine sta tion, Pacific Grove, reported that some 4,000 schools of the herring-like fish were spot ted in a recent aerial survey. Evaporation Increased As for the effect on land temperatures, Miller explains it this way: "The warm water heats the air above it. Warm ocean and warm air increase the rate of evaporation. Warm air holds more moisture than cold air. As it moved toward shore and inland across the continent it thus increases the amount of warming rain that is drop ped." Miller noted that the win ter of 1957-58 was not only the wettest of the century for California, but a warm one too. Air Power Ready For Berlin Threat Detroit (UPD America's air might in Europe is on the alert to "promptly and prop erly respond" to any Commu nist threat to West Berlin, the commander of the United States Air Force in Europe declared Wednesday night. Gen. Frank F. Everest said West Berlin has been a shin ing example of heroic efforts to create a free and prosper ous city in the midst of a land where poverty and misery abound under the Communist regime. He said the "almost frantic Communist efforts" to rid themselves of the deep-seated thorn of West Berlin is evi dence of the trouble which the island of freedom has been to the Communist world around it. Gen. Everest indicated the North Atlantic Treaty Organi zation is a major military al liance "necessary to the sur vival of the free world." Although he said he was convinced that Russia does not want to provide a major war, the four-star general said "we must stay ready for global war or face military disaster." Portland Family Still Missing Portland -(UPD The fate of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Martin and their three daughters re mained a mystery today. . The Portland family has been missing since Sunday on a Christmas tree gathering trip. Searchers have checked out numerous tips without finding a trace of them or their white 1954 Ford station wagon trimmed in red. Search switched back to the Larch mountain area again Wednesday after a report that the family had beenvseen on the mountain Sunday. But a check of back roads, already covered earlier ;by sheriff's deputies, located nothing. Sheriff Francis Lambert of Multnomah county said "I wish to God I knew where to look. I fear they are either in a deep canyon or in water." Martin, 54; his wife, Bar bara, 48, and their daughters, aged 14, 12 and 11, were last seen Sunday when they told friends they were going to get unristmas greens. Canada had eight deaths from diphtheria in 1956, com pared with 2,075 in 1921. Los Angeles Air Pollution Officials Increase Efforts Los Angeles-(UPD-Los Ange les air pollution officials, con fronted with the worst Decem ber smog siege on record, stepped up their efforts today to rid the area of aerial con tamination. Two smog alerts .already have been declared this month, marking the first out break of warning-level pollu tion ever to be recorded in the Los Ageles Basin during De cember. The alerts increased to seven the number called so far this year as compared with only one for the entire year of 1957. In 1956, 10 alerts were declared, while 15 were necessary in 1955. The automobile is now the No. 1 source of pollution," ac cording to S. Smith Griswold, chief of the county Air Pollu tion Control District. "We are waging an all-out effort to control exhaust fumes.". Griswold said earlier ef forts had resulted in the "cleaning up" of oil refineries and other industries. A sulphuric acid mist-simi lar to that present in the killer fogs"of London and Donora, Pa. was suspended in the dirty pall along with other pollutants. Weather Too Good Griswold attributed the in cidence of smog alerts this year to "too much good weather." He pointed out a frequent number of days dur ing which conditions were ideal for smog. In addition. to the weath er, he said, "more and more families each with an auto mobile are moving Into the Los Angeles area. The larger the population becomes, the more serious our problem is." Griswold praised county su pervisors who recently passed the controversial Rule 62. The measure requires plants burn ing fuel oil containing more than, .5 per cent sulphur to switch to a more expensive oil or to natural gas during the smog season. He branded as "inadequate" efforts of the automobile in dustry to control vehicular pollution. He said it was spending $1 million a year for research while the Air Pollution Control District was putting out $3 million annual ly to combat smog. "We won t have clean air here until an exhaust control device is perfected," the smog chief said. "If the auto mak ers would spend more time on. this factor and less time- on fins, the solution would come very soon."
