Moore is favored at 3-1. Leopold Pigeon, chairman of the Montreal Athletic Com mission, announced Tuesday night that Jack Sharkey, for mer heavyweight champion, had been selected to referee Montreal's first world title fight in five years. Sharkey will have no scoring vote. Three judges do the scoring ; in Montreal on a five-point . basis. Promoter Eddie Quinn re- ported that a brisk" ticket sale '.; had put $65,000 in the till and - indicated a crowd of 11,000 'and a gate of $125,000 - new Montreal fight record. ; Televised Nationally - The scheduled 15-rounder ; between Moore and the 29-year-old fisherman from Baie Ste. Anne, New Brunswick, will be televised throughout the United States by the American Broadcasting com pany and throughout Canada by the Canadian Broadcasting company. There will be a blackout in the province of Quebec and in the upper portions of some U. S. border states. The bout is slated to start at 10 p.m. (E.S.T.) ABC paid $75,000 for the United States video rights, and CBC paid $20,000 for the Canadian TV rights. He is a deadly hit ter who scored 126 knockouts while winning 174 of his 204 bouts. That 126 tied him with the late W. L. Young Stribling for the most knockouts regis tered during any fighter's career in ring history. An other knockout tonight would make Archie the all-time kayo king. Durelle Dangerous Slugger Moore is also smart defen sively. He protects himself with a barricade of arms and elbows as he stalks an oppon Harlem Stars Give Hilarious Evening Clown Prince Goose Tatum and then to a 41-26 intermis- led his highly regarded Har- lem Stars to a hilarious 80-46 victory over the outgunned Hawkinson Tire Tread hoop- sters in the Hednck junior high gym last night. Tatum 's clowning antics had not only the crowd laughing and cheering, but it kept the Hawkinson boys in continual spasms of laughter. Hawkinson players put up a game fight but their short age of height and evident in ability to hit the bucket kept them well behind the more ex perienced Stars. Behind the back passes and clever ball handling of all the Stars accounted for many of the points as the visitors of world wide fame jumped off to a 29-16 first quarter lead Riddle Five Subdues IV Cave Junction-Riddle high, using a full court press de fense all the way, downed Illinois Valley 49 to 28 in a non-league hoop tangle. The visitors had 14 to 8, 25 to 18 and 31 to 20 quarter spreads. Louisignont with 21 points paced Riddle and Keele had 14. Ron Morgan scored 11 for IV. The Cougars just weren't ready to meet Riddle's full scale pressing. Nevertheless, they scored 11 field goals to their opponenfs 13. Fouls hurt IV with 22 charged to the Cougars against 11 tooted on Riddle. Durelle is an awkward but dangerous slugger who scored 39 kayoes while winning 76 of his 93 bouts. He usually marches in with a wild hook ing attack and keeps throwing leather until someone hits the deck. Both Yvon and Archie have been stopped six times each. Moore is defending the title he won on Dec. 17, 1952 by outpointing . Joey Maxim at St. Louis. He defended twice against Maxim and once each against Harold Johnson, Bobo Olson, Yolande Pompey and Tony Anthony. S10n bulge. Ward Brings Cheers Problems got more compli cated for the home town hoop sters as the dribbling of Tiny Ward added to the troubles of the Hawkinson team. Ward fought off a three and four man press with his one-man tactics in a crowd-cheering ex hibition of dribbling. Tatum and his whole squad were continually giving the two officials. Chuck Crandall and Cy Perkins, trouble whether it was over kicked basketballs or crying for more shots than the foul was worth no matter how many times the victim was fouled. Time was halted when the "Prince" appeared to be thirs ty and a dipper and bucket was brought from the bench. An argument ensued and Ta tum was splattered by the dip per and in turn took off after the villain with the bucket only to heave a mound of pa per into the panicking front rows of the audience. Shades of riotous college days were evident when Ta tum apparently captured from the crowd a conspicuous pair of ladies pink panties near the closing minutes of the fourth quarter after the Stars had led 63-33 as the final stanza opened. Injury Ruse Apparent despair reigned in the Star squad when Tatum was fouled and his shoulder was thought to be affected but after a trip to the bench every thing appeared to be under control. . The injury proved to be a ruse when Tatum had merely gone over to get another ball with a rubber band attached which raised havoc in the free throw lane. ' Tatum capped the evening's scoring in the final second of play when he dunked the ball from his perch position atop Ward's shoulders. Big Sweetwater Clifton headed the evening scoring with 34 points while Tatum had 23, Ward 12, Ramon Wil kinson five and Buckner six. High man for the Hawkin son five was Derald Wooton with seven with Doug Witte and Ron Perry getting six each, Don Harris four, Wil lard Lilly two, Dick Niles three, Darry- Johnson four, Dale McCay two, Bob Plank enhorn four, Fred Johnson three, and Bob Serak five. Medford Ladies Enter Tourney Seattle defeated the Med ford YMCA women's team 15-13 and 15-10 and Portland Northeast subdued Medford 15-10 and 15-4 last week end in the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station Invitational Vol leyball tournament at Oak Harbor, Wash. Bremerton, Wash., won the tourney and Portland North east Y was second. Attending the tournament from Medford were Carol Rose, Bernice Ellis. Teressa Short, Capt. Lucille Cornelius, Agnes Holzhauser, Virginia Marks, Ruth Niles, Co-capt. Juanita Bunker, Jeri Hutton and Vi Lewis. Turkey Shoot Here on Sunday Medford Gun club will hold a turkey and ham shoot this Sunday. It will be one of two pre- Christmas merchandise events. The shoot will start at 10 a.m. and non -member shooters are invited to enter. WILLAMETTE WINNER Salem - (UPD - Willamette won its second basketball game of the season against three defeats Tuesday night by downing Oregon College of Education 67-56 here. Larry Lynn had 18 points and Marlin Marsh 15 for the Bear cats, who were behind 37-26 at the half. Ken Johnson led the OCE scoring with 13 while Rex Brown and Bill Sherk had 10 apiece. Willam ette shot .431 from the field to .333 for OCE. Medfo; MEDFORD'S BEST BACK Gerry Lyons, above, has been honored as the Medford high football team's best back. The designation was bestowed on him by his teammates. Lyons, the senior halfback, was the Black Tornado's workhorse and top ground gainer. Coach Fred Spiegelberg announced the recognition accorded Lyons last night at the Medford Lions club dinner for the Tornado squad and for St. Mary's high senior gridders. Paul Dietzel, Chosen 1958 New York-(UPD -Paul Diet zel, who guided Louisiana State to the only perfect rec ord this year among major college football teams and the 1958 national gridiron cham pionship, today was named "Coach of the Year" in the annual poll conducted by the New York World - Telegram Grade Gift Toss Tournament Set By Oregon State Oregon State College, Cor vallis The first annual state ox Oregon grade school free throw championships will be staged at Gill Coliseum on February 28, sponsored jointly by the state Elks association and the OSC athletic depart ment, athletic director R. S. (Spec) Keane has announced. A trip with the OSC basket ball team to California in March on an all-expense-paid trip, in addition to a first place trophy, will go to the eventual winner of the tour ney. He will sit on the Beaver bench at Palo Alto and Berke ley and serve as assistant hoop manager. Trophies also will be given to the second, third and fourth place winners. Thirty-six varir ous county winners will first vie on Saturday, February 28, in an afternoon session at the Coliseum. The top four will advance to the evening finals, at halftime of the OSC-Idaho game. 75 Throws Champion will be . chosen on the basis of 50 throws in the afternoon and 25 that evening. County champion ships will be organized and conducted by individual Elks lodges in every county of Ore gon. A member of the local lodge will escort his county champion to Corvallis, and the Corvallis lodge will serve as hosts to the youngsters while they are in Corvallis. A committee of three has been chosen to handle the state-wide contest. It includes Jack Zimbrick of Lebanon, chairman of the inter-lodge ac tivities of the State Elks as sociation; Rex Smith, repre senting the host Corvallis Elks lodge; and Jim Barratt, busi ness manger of athletics at OSC. Participants will be allow ed to shoot their free throws in any way they choose, pro viding of course, they are at the proper distance. Students must be in grade school, not past the eighth grade. HARNESS CHAIRMAN New York - (CPU - Commis sioner Geqrge P. Monaghan of New York has been elect ed temporary chairman of an eight-state association of harness racing commissioners. Dietzel won the honor by "the greatest sweep in the 24 year histoy of this renowned award," the World-Telegram and Sun reported. Dietzel received 312 first place votes from the 618 bal lots cast by members of the American Football Coaches association. He also received 116 second-place votes and 67 third-place votes and thus was mentioned on 495 ballots, ap proximately 80 per cent of the total. Forest Evashevski, who led Iowa to the Big Ten title and Rose Bowl berth despite the graduation of several star players, was runner-up in the voting with 58 first -place votes and was mentioned on 173 ballots. Mont turned in his resigna tion to the Maryland board of regents Tuesday. The Terrapins, former na tional champions, won only 11 games in three seasons under Mont's direction. He succeed ed Jim Tatum as head coach in 1956. Edwards currently is head coach at North Carolina State while Jones is line coach at Oklahoma. REPORTS - California Tips Gaels United Press International The only way to beat the University of California bas ketball team is to break through its defenses-but even 11th ranked St. Mary's couldn't quite make it Tues day night. The Bears chalked up their fourth straight win of the season by edging the Gaels, 57-55, before a crowd of 7,200 at Berkeley. It was the first defeat for St. Mary's in four games. Tonight the University of San Francisco Dons hope to come up with a winning com bination when they host Texas Christian university. The Dons have beaten Chico State and dropped close games to Seattle and California. Other games tonight: Pep perdine vs. Seattle, San Diego State vs. Loyola, Long Beach vs. Nevada, Whitman vs. Gon zaga and Pacific Lutheran vs. Portland university. California almost blew a comfortable lead over St Mary's. The Bears were ahead, 56-43, with just seven minutes remaining when the Gaels started to roll. The Gaels closed the gap to two points and then missed with a series of desperation shots in the final seconds. LaRoy Doss of St. Mary's was high point man with 18, while guard Denny Fitzpat rick led the Bears with 16.
