AMANT Pasadena, Calif. -WD- A new Pacific Coast "Big Four" conference which will seek to extend its prestige and sched uling on a nationwide basis emerged today from the wreckage of the Pacific Coast conference. The so-called Big Pour the University of California, UCLA, University of South ern California and the Uni versity of Washington rep resentatives met with people from the old Pacific Coast conference (PCC) during the past two days to wind up af fairs of the athletic league which was founded in 1915. But they had their eyes at the same time on the future. The Big Four may woo such titans as Army, Navy, Pitt and Notre Dame. The PCC, concluding its meeting Tuesday, made these pronouncements: Secret About Bowl The faculty representa tives and athletic directors agreed to secret arrangements with the Tournament of Roses committee for the Jan. 1, 1960, Rose Bowl game with a Big Ten conference champ ion. This revised contract, which will outlive the PCC which dies by its own hand on June 30, 1959, must still be approved by the Big Ten and the National Broadcast Jim Brown Improves Rush Total Philadelphia - (UPD - Jarring Jimmy Brown, although fail ing to get the one touchdown he needs to tie a record, rolled for 138 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles last week to bring his record-breaking ground gaining total to 1,379. The star Cleveland back has an average of better than 125 yards per game and has broken the National Football league record for one season by 233 yards with one game to be played. Brown also is tops in scor ing with 102 points and needs one touchdown in Sunday's final regular-season game at New York to equal former Eagles star Steve Van Buren's record of 18 in one season. Lennie Moore of Baltimore is second in scoring with 14 touchdowns for 84 points, fol lowed by Page Cothren, Los Angeles, 74 points; Bobby Walston, Philadelphia, 67 points. Two Chicago Bears' stars, George Blanda and "Willie Galimore, each have 66. Perry Third The Colts' Alan Ameche is second in ball carrying with 777 yards for a 4.8 average on 162 attempts. Joe Perry of the Forty Niners, who holds the all-time ground gaining record with 6,499 yards in nine seasons, is third with 708. Next is Tom Tracy if Pittsburgh with 679 yards. The Bears' Rick Casares moved from sixth to fifth with 643. Little Eddie Le Baron re tained his lead among the passers despite the fact that he didn t play last week. The Washington Redskins' quarterback has an average gain of 9.23 yards, attempt ing 128 passes and complet ing 72 for 1,181 yards and 10 touchdowns. In second place is Bobby Layne of Pittsburgh with an 8.58 average. Wade Moves Up Milt Plum of Cleveland continued in third place while Billy Wade of Los Angeles, fifth last week, traded places with the Colts' Johnny Umtas, A tie for pass receptions between Ray Berry of Balti more and Pete Retzlaff of the Eagles was broken with the Colts' star grabbing eight passes last week while Retz laff got four. Del Shofner of Los Angeles is third with 49, one more than Lennie Moore of Baltimore. Woodley Lewis of the Chicago Cardinals and the Forty Niners' Clyde Con- Tier tied for fifth with 41. Sam Baker of Washington leads the punters with a 45.4 average; Jon Arnett, Los An geles, is the pace setter in punt returns with a 12.4 aver age, and Leonard Lyes, Balti more, is tops in kickoff re turns with a 36.2 average. Jim Patton has a lead of three over his nearest com petitors in pass interceptions. PSC BEATS PACIFIC Portland-dTB-The Portland State Vikings defeated Paci fic university, 61-45, here Tuesday night in a non-conference basketball contest. John Winters led the Port land State attack with 15 points. John Fredericks had 12. Don Printz was high for the Badgers with 10 points. The Bruins' probation had been scheduled to end June 30, 1959 but they are still in a probationary status as far as MEDFORIWTaiBUNE SLPqMI&j Dick Bass Captures Triple Grid Crown New York-(UPD-No wonder the Los Angeles Rams drafted junior Dick Bass last week al though he has announced he will play halfback again next year for College of Pacific. Bass, 21, a 189 -pounder from Vallejo, Calif., is the first major college player in a dozen years to gain more yards carrying the ball from scrimmage than anyone could gain throwing passes. Bass outgained the passers more decisively than any ball carrier since before he was born. And by adding the scor ing title to his rushing and to tal yardage crowns, he accom plished a feat last performed in the year of his birth, by Byron (Whizzer) White of Colorado. All-Time High Final NCA figures showed today that Bass netted 1,361 yards on 205 rushing plays an all-time high of 6.63 yards Moore, Dunlevy Take Over Lead In Holiday Golf Joe Moore and Jim Dun- levy with plus 10 points are leaders and Clayton Lewis and Frank Allen with eight are second after one week of play in the Holiday handicap golf tourney at Rogue Valley Country club. The partnership tourney will continue through , the winter months with teams getting plus or minus points for the number of holes they are up or down at the end of an 18-hole match. Moore and Dunlevy lost two points in their opening match with Ed Nichols and A. C. Broyles but collected 12 in a win over Jack Lewis and Jack Daugherty. Clayton Lewis and Allen won seven from Lloyd Pope and Dick Travis and one from Ed Hall and Jay Brown. Tied with 65s in the battle for low net best ball are the Bob Wells-Glen Fabrick, Bill Kalibak-Jack Eidswick and Moore - Dunlevy teams. League Emerges Probation Ended the NCAA is concerned. The NCAA may take action to lift the probation on a nation al basis. Treasury Split -Secret arrangements were approved for a split of the PCC treasury, estimated to amount to at least $225,000, among the nine member schools. -Athletic directors of the nine member PCC schools were named as a committee to handle arrangements for the Jan. 1, 1960 game when per rush for 200 or more tries. He added 79 yards on 13 passes for a total offense of 1,440 yards and led the major college scorers with 116 points on 18 touchdowns and 8 extra points. Bass left runnerup Bob White of Ohio State, who gained 859 yards, a record 502 yards behind in the rushing department. The California star barely beat out Iowa's Randy Duncan in the total of fense race, 1,440 to 1,406, and beat Bill Austin of Rutgers by 10 points in the scoring de partment. Austin scored 106. Bass plays halfback in a T formation. Since the forward pass was invented, none but a tailback or a T-quarterback had been able to put -enough running and passing together to lead the nation in total yards. All of the top 30 this year, except Bass, are quar terbacks or tailbacks. Few Western Leaders Bass is the West coast's only rushing champion except Ol lie Matson, current Chicago Cardinal star who won the crown at San Francisco in 1951. Bass is only the third Far West player to win the scoring title. The others were Matson and Duke Morrison of California in 1922. Although Bass' 1,361 rush ing yards was just 14 more than this year's best individ ual passing distance Duncan's 1,347 yards, Whizzer White's 12-yard rushing edge over the air-yards leader in 1937, Billy Patternsbn of Baylor, was the biggest bulge any runner had boasted previously in the life time of the new champion. Although Bass say he will play college football again next year, he was eligible to be drafted for professional football and the Rams picked him first last week. They are willing to wait a year but wanted to be certain of get ting him. YMCA To Form Hoop Quintets Grade school and Junior high school basketball teams are being organized at the Young Men's Christian asso ciation under the direction of Bruce Burns and Everett Mc Graw. The teams will represent the YMCA -in competition with opponents of their skill level throughout the commu nity and surrounding area. Any boy who is a member of the YMCA may play on one of the teams. The grade school team will practice on Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. Junior high boys will work out on Mondays and Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. A play swim will follow the practices. Burns will coach the grade school teams and McGraw the junior high boys. McGraw has played semi-pro basketball. 75.00 per season the conference will have died by its own hand. A three-man executive committee was ap pointed which will probably do most of the work on this. Greg Engelhard, University of California at Berkeley athlet ic director, was named chair man; Leo Harris of the Uni versity of Oregon, and Jess Hill of USC were the other members of the work-horse committee. -Three rules for recruit ment of high school athletes were changed. Under the re vision, an athlete not in good standing scholastically may turn out for practice al though he would be inelig ible for competition; one off campus interview, previously prohibited, may be held with an athletic prospect; and a member school representa tive may tell a potential re cruit of the financial aid that awaits him. Snyder President -The PCC greybeards agreed to hold another and probably final meeting in Seattle beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday May 23, next year. This date coincides with the ;PCC track and field meet at i the University of Washington in Seattle. -The PCC representatives also elected officers for their final year. Dr. Rixford K. Snyder of Stanford univer sity, was re-elected president; Glenn W. Holcomb of Oregon State college, was elected secretary; Wilbur Johns of UCLA was named treasurer; and Bradford A. Booth of UCLA was appointed comp troller. -R. S. (Spec) Keene of Ore gon State was named chair man of the athletic directors' group; and Leo Harris of Ore gon, secretary of the same body. -Hugh C. Willett of USC was named chairman of the advisory committee to the PCC commissioner. -The acting PCC commis sioner Bernard Hammerbeck was named PCC delegate to the NCAA conference in Cin cinnati beginning Jan. 6. -Applications or waivers on eligibility requirements of a minor nature, were passed on. Pond was offensive quarterback for the Tornado. He is a senior. Other captain-elect is Jim Clark, the defensive quarterback. Red Raiders n r prepare ror Trip South Ashland Southern Oregon college Red Raiders ran through some fast workouts Monday and Tuesday in prep ration for their encounters with San Francisco State and Sacramento State in the Bay area this week end. Free throws have been on the practice list also since the Raiders were able to convert only 27 to 60 gift tries last week against Chico State. Guard Gordie Carrigan and forward Dave D'Olivo will lead the men of SOC into battle this week with Carrigan sporting an 18.5 point average and D'Olivo an 18 mark. D'Olivo is on top in the re bound department with 14.5 and Carrigan is second with 10 for an average. Carrigan, McAbee Team Teaming with Carrigan is Jim McAbee out front and it is these two who will lead the Raider fast break. D'Olivo teams with either Punk Biddington or Don Van nice in the forward wall and Dick Smith plays the post position. With only two games be hind them the Raiders have a 38 per cent shooting mark from the floor as opposed to opponents 27 but their hoop rivals have hit 67 per cent on free throws and the Raiders have been able to convert only on 45. SOC also leads the rebound ing which is surprising for their lack of height beneath the taller teams they have played. Offensively the Raid ers have an edge 40-38 and de fensively 71-67 over Chico. Following the trip to the Golden Gate the Raiders will journey to Humboldt State college for the Far Western tournament Dec. 18-20. STADIUM PROPOSED St. Louis (UPD The St. Louis Chamber of Commerce today studied a proposal for a 30-million dollar sports stad ium which would seat 50,000 persons and be built on the Mississippi riverfront. School Session For Game Men Portland - School bells will ring for game commission em ployees Dec. 10, 11 and 12 as some 160 biologists and other staff technicians gather from all corners of the state for their annual three -day train ing conference. The whirl wind school will be held at the Boy Scout training center just east of Portland. One of the purposes of this annual event is to review the latest technical developments in fish and game management including a thorough critique of Oregon's management pro gram and developments. In addition to the general fish and game management review, concentrated courses will be held in law enforce ment, commission history and policy, Oregon water laws, wishway design, and range plant identification.
