AVENUE B52 Bomber Falls; Explodes Near Oklahoma Base Altus, Okla.-iEPD-An eight jet B52 bomber crashed and exploded in open ground about six miles north of here late Tuesday night. One survivor was found about a quarter of a mile from the crash, (unconscious and in a state of shock. At least one victim was seen among the burning bits of wreckage, scattered over a wide area. A spokesman at Altus Air Force Base, where the Stra tegic Air Command plane was based, said the plane def initely was not carrying any bombs, , nuclear or otherwise. On Practice Flight He said the plane was prob ably practicing night touch-and-go flights, in which a craft makes continuous passes at a landing strip and touches down its wheels without stop ping. He said the normal B52 crew is five men, but it had not been established how many men were aboard the plane on its fatal run. Unofficial sources indicated there was reason to believe that eight men were on the plane, for special training purposes. Something Wrong The iplane crashed shortly before midnight. Residents in Altus, some six miles from the base, said they noticed something was wrong with the engines as the B52 passed over. They are having a well drill ed at present. Christmas cards from Jap an state that Mr. and Mrs, Chester Lind have been liv ing near Tokyo for the last seven months, having been transferred there from Okin awa. Lind is teaching sixth grade in the Sagamthara ele mentary school. Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Good night entertained 26 guests on Thanksgiving honoring Mrs. Goodnight's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Marshall of Central Point, who were cele brating their 46th wedding anniversary. A son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Marshall, of Provo, Utah, came for his parents' anniversary. Mrs. Beulah Buffington of Boise, Ida., arrived Monday to make her home with her son, Gail Buffington. Bill Shannon, teaching mu sic at Nestucca High school near Salem, spent Thanksgiv ing holidays with his parents, miles away. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Brown of Sterling, who have resided in Grants' Pass for some time, are now caretakers at the ranch property of Dr. M. R. Schlesinger of Reseda, Calif., formerly owned by Lynn Valentine. Mr. and Mrs. Valentine are living at their new home in Jacksonville, having purchas ed the Don Owen house which they are redecorating. While Mrs. Valentine soon will be wearing long skirts in honor of the Centennial, Val entine has joined the ranks of the whisker growers, and already has his gold watch chain and six shooter which he will wear while operating his buzz saw and pitcher pump in the yard. Members of the Little Ap plegate Sewing club will hold their December meeting at the home of Mrs. Harry Davis Thursday, Dec. 18. New offic ers include Mrs. Davis, presi dent, and Mrs. Armin Rich ter, secretary-treasurer. Mrs. O. S. Erickson of Sioux City, Iowa, is spending two months at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Larry Tweedy. John Ramsay is spending a few days here with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Ram say, having completed basic training in the Navy at San Diego. Ramsay will leave soon for further training at New Orleans, where he will spend Christmas. Don Chapman of the Jack son county welfare depart ment spoke at Ruch Parent Teacher association Friday evening on "shelter and fost er homes" in the county. Chapman said about 75 fam ilies in the county are car ing for children at the pres ent. His discussion of the pro cedure was given in the form of an interview with Mr. and Mrs. Larry Tweedy, who act ed the part of parents wish ing to "adopt" children for a time. Mrs. Francis Gregory, PTA chairman, presided at the business meeting follow ing the discussion. Mrs. Carl Herslof left re cently for Portland, having sold her home here to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bryden of Rich mond, Calif. Mrs. Herslof was accompanied by her sis ters, Mrs. Mattie Phillips from Butte, Mont., and Mrs. Sylvia Scheps of Denver, who had been her guests for the last three weeks. Richard Sanford, who is serving aboard the Navy's USS Vega, spent Thanksgiv ing here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Sanford, and with his family in Jackson ville. Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Offen bacher have completed a new home and moved into it Sat urday. Military Chapels Remove Leaflets Tokyo-(UPI)-U. S. authorities ordered military chapels to day to. remove from their shelves a controversial pam phlet urging Americans not to marry foreigners. The pamphlet, which had begun to create ill Will in Japan where 30,000 U.S. serv icemen have married foreign girls, was written by a chap lain named George W. Thomp son. Titled, "If I Marry a For eigner," it warned Americans against attempting to hurdle the social and religious bar riers involved in such a mar riage. Col. Albert C. Schiff Jr., staff chaplain of the 5th Air Force here, ordered the pam phlet removed from chapel shelves. "This pamphlet should not be on the literature racks of our chapels," he said in an of ficial statement. "This is not an official pamphlet and was distributed inadvertently. Now that it has been brought to our attention it is being withdrawn." The pamphlet asked Amer icans to "think a long time before marrying a foreigner. Spurt in Housing Starts Expected Washington-flJPD-There will be more homes started in 1959, but they'll cost more, ac cording to a group of home builders. About half of the 36 build ers at an outlook symposium, sponsored by the National As sociation of Home Builders, said Tuesday they expect a 5 per cent spurt in housing starts.
