Bulwark of American Defense Left Shattered In Pacific 17 Years Ago Pearl Harbor, Hawaii-(UPD- Seventeen years ago today the U.S. Pacific fleet, bulwark of American defense in the Pa cific area, lay shattered.. , ' Smoke still rose from the partially sunken remains of the Arizona and other ships of the 86-vessel armada. Some 3,303 sailors, marines and soldiers were dead or missing and another 1,272 were wounded. Entry Into War '' - , At 10:25 a.m. (PST) the pre vious '.day, Dec. 7,' 1941, 100 Japanese bombers ' supported by a number of submarines perpetrated the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor which mark ed the entry of the United States into World War II. - Sunday, the 17thanniver-j sary of the attack, not a single line was carried in the Japa nese newspapers to mark the date. But here at the scene of the attack Navy chaplains of three faiths offered prayers for the 1,012 men still en tombed in the rusting hulk of the Arizona. A dozen floral wreaths were placed at the base of her flagstaff, which still protrudes above the water. A five-man firing squad of Marines crowded onto a small wooden platform erected where the bridge of the Ari zona once stood. They fired three volleys over the wreaths while a bugler played taps. Civil Defense Day In Washington the anniver sary this year was officially designated as Civil Defense Day with new calls for con stant vigilance against a nu clear Pearl Harbor. Defense Mobilizer Leo A. Hoegh led ceremonies held at the tomb of the nation's unknown soldiers in historic Arlington Cemetery. The greatest tribute we can pay those who have fallen in the defense of our country and in particular to those who fell on this day in 1941," he said, "is the solemn pledge that never again will we be caught unprepared by a sur prise attack." Bridge is the most popular card game with American women, while poker is the fa vorite with men. It means that circu lation so identified is measured according to the rules and standards of the Audit Bureau of Circulations The A.B.C. is a cooperative and non-profit association of 3,450 publishers, advertisers and advertising agencies. Organized in 1914, these buyers and sellers of advertising brought order out of advertising chaos by setting up standards for paid circulation and establishing rules and methods for measuring, auditing and report ing circulations. " Therefore, the work of the A.B.C., of which this newspaper is pr6ud to be a member, provides you with a direct and valuable service. You can buy advertising as you would make any other sound business investment on the basis of well known standards, known values. At regular intervals one of the Bureau's large staff of experienced circulation auditors makes aj thorough audit of our circulation records. The results of this exacting audit show: 'How much circulation we have; where our circulation goes; . how it was obtained; and many other facts that you need in order to know just what you get for your advertising dollars.
