If I were run ning a factory I would be Dr. A) vxres happy to take men who could perhaps sit at a bench and do a good day's work, even if theyhad only one leg or no legs at all, or if they had only one eye or a bad heart or a great big high blood pressure. I wouldn't care as long as the man did his work, and so long as I was assured that later no industrial accident com mission would stick me for everything possible if the man died while at his work. For 30 years or more one of my friends who was a sick ly little hunchback did a mag nificent job as a physician. For years one of the most val uable men in the electrical field was a hunchback who had a genius for calculating how motors and dynamos could be .made smaller and more efficent. One of the abl est business women I ever knew sat all day in a wheel chair, because she was so completely crippled by rheu matoid arthritis. She had only one finger that would work, and with this she used the telephone. Hypothetical Worker ! I recently re-read in an ar ticle by Dr. H.R. Wainerdi (1954) how, in 1950, Dr. How ard Rusk, while thinking along the lines I just men tioned, described a hypotheti cal worker a 59-year-old man, blind in one eye and color-blind in the other. He had a low-grade pulmonary tuberculosis, which was quies cent and not likely to kill him. He had a heart murmur which perhaps would send shivers down the back of a heart specialist, but wasn't bothering the man any. The fellow had arthritis in both el bows and shoulders so that he didn't have much motion in them. He was totally deaf and, as a result, he was a bit eccentric. One could hardly blame him for that with all his mul tiple disabilities. His left leg had been amputated at the knee. His hands developed a severe rash whenever they were put Into certain solu tions. He was the sort of man that the employment manager, at first glance, would feel like rushing out the door before he could die on the premises! And yet studies in Sweden showed that a man as crippled as this chap was could handle half the jobs in the leather industry. As Dr. Rusk went on to say, why then deny this fellow work which he could do? Thousands of work ing men probably would say, "Throw him out and give the job to a healthy man with a family." What they forget is that when the handicapped man is denied the work he could do, he must be given food and clothing and a roof over his head. Who will pay for these things? I heard the worker saying, The Government." Oh n o: all the Government can do is take each month, out of the pay checks of the men who are working, the money that is needed to support the men who are not permitted to work. Sex in the Adolescent Many mothers ask what would be a good book for their teen-ager who wants to know more about the facts of life. A good discussion of this subject has just come to my desk. It is called "Sex and the Adolescent; a Guide for Young People and Their Par ents," and was written by Maxine Davis (Dial Press). Mrs. Davis has succeeded in the difficult task of writing frankly about some usually tabooed subjects. She has done this in simple English that can easily be understood by young people. She discusses most of the problems of sex, including homosexuality, and even the terrible problems that arise when a girl gets pregnant.
