December 5, 19S8 Medford Man Seeks Thorsten Lundberg, 217 South Riverside ave., is en gaged in a "sentimental search" for two men who once knew his late brother, Hugo Lundberg. Thorsten Lundberg relates that he ran away from home as a young man, changed his name to James Kelly (a name he still uses), and after serv ing irt World War I spent his life railroading. Lundberg (or Kelly) has among his possessions a pic ture of his brother, taken at Swems studio sometime in the early 20s. With him in the picture are two young men, who he cannot identify but who he would like to meet. He asks that anyone know ing who they might be to get in touch with him. The people are un happy because no doctor will : yi any help. Ac- 3 tuallv thic ic one of those inherited dis eases of the nervous sys- Dr. Alvarei tem which are so devastating and for which as yet we physicians have absolutely no treatment. When any part of the nervous system was built poorly be cause of a bad inheritance, and then starts to go to pieces, there is no way a doc tor can go in to rebuild it. I fear we will never find a cure. Hence it is that in all these cases I beg the people not to waste all thehir family sav ings on traveling around from one clinic to another. If a good neurologist says that it is Huntington's chorea and no one knows of any treatment, the people should not keep traveling about. I know how hard it is to sit still and do nothing when an adored child is perhaps going blind and becoming paralyzed. Sometimes after writing a hopeless column like this, I get a number of very angry and very hurt letters from mothers who say they'll mort gage everything the family has so that they can keep paying one quack after an other anyone who will even attempt to cure the patient. One woman just wrote me that she even went to Ger many to see a quack she had heard of through a friend. But all he did was to take her money. While I admire the great devotion of mothers like this who "won't give up," I always feel like saying to those who have perhaps one idiot child and three brilliant and able ones, "Can't you see how un fair and unwise you are spending all your savings on a child who can never grow up, while you are dooming to hard times and perhaps a lack of education, your other fine children who can be of great use to the world?" A few hundred times I have seen parents behave in this very unwise and unfair way. My heart goes out to them and I understand their be havior, but still I am sure they are very wrong. Achlorhydria of the Stomach People write asking me what on earth are they going to do, now that it has been found that they have no acid in their stomach. Usually, I tell them that I doubt if they need be at all concerned. One of my relatives has absolutely no acid in her gastric juice and she has the digestion of an ostrich. Usually, people with ach lorhydria do not have sym toms. Some few were born with a lack of acid, and others developed it as they grow older, just as a man develops a bald head as he grows old er. Anyone who loves to treat himself or to be treated by a physician can take some dilute hydrochloric acid with each meal, but rarely in my life have I seen it make a person feel any better. Usually, all it did was to take the enamel off the back of his upper four front teeth. Canker Sores in the Mouth I don't know how many times I have written a col umn on canker sores, and still dozens of people write asking me what they are due to. As they say, the medical textbook writers rarely know anything about them. In my experience they are due to eating of some food to which the person is allergically sensitive. In my own' case, if tonight I were to eat a small amount of chocolate, tomor row I'd have canker sores. They are little white sores which hurt a great deal for about five days, and then go away. The way to find out what they are due to is to keep a record of the unusual foods eaten the day before canker sores appear.
