Despite Akins' punching prowess and Jordans skill, their scheduled 15-rounder leaves local fans lukewarm Less than 6,000 are expected at the Olympic Auditorium, where the gate may approach $40,000. Because the bout will be televised and broadcast na tionally by NBC, it must be started at 7 p.m., PST - (10 p.m. EST). That early start may have hurt the ticket sale. although there's a TV black out in a 300-mile radius. Regardless of the crowd and gate, Los Angeles' first welterweight fight in 19 years will be a financial success be cause of $50,000 in TV-radio money, .and because each fighter works strictly on per centage. The other probable starter, guard Bob Steele, is a relative mid get at 5-7. Steele, Barrong, Flury and Hoenisch were lettermen on the 1957-58 'Roseburg team which beat Bend 39 to 28 and Hermiston 57 to 49 and lost to Grant 44 to 33 and to Franklin 54 to 42 . in state tournament action. Frank came to Roseburg after letter ing two years at Morton, Wash. , Roseburg was 7-3 in the Midwestern league for second place last season behind Springfield's 8-2. and 18-8 for the regular and tournament season. Crater was 3-13 for the Southern Oregon conference slate last year and is trying to improve on a 6-16 record for last season. SIGNS LIONS PACT Detroit - (UPD - T h e Detroit Lions this week gave Coach George Wilson a new one-year contract. Wilson won the Na tional Football league cham pionship last year, but his Lions are hardpressed to fin ish above the .500 mark this season. Constructions and other plans are so far advanced that, if necessary, the 1960 Winter Olympic Games could b e staged here in 19591 In fact, if there was enough snow, the games could be held this week end at least as far as the skiing facilities are con cerned. After listening to all the complaints from disgruntled former and would-be execu tives of the 1960 games, a thorough investigation of the facilities here today showed these things: All ski slopes are ready for action. The ski Jump is 90 per cent completed. Three ski lifts now are in action, with one still to be completed. Outside work on the four dormitories to house the 1,200 athletes and coaches, all com pleted. Two of these dormi tories will have the inside completed in two , months in time for the North American championships. The huge press headquar ters building is completed ex cept for furnishing the inside. Reception center for ath letes completed except for in side. " Athletes' dining hall 60 per cent completed. Hockey rink completed. Ice arena, : which seats 11,000, 65 per cent completed. Speed skating rink, 90 per cent completed, with 70 miles of piping for artificial freezing laid. Administration building completed and will be ready to move into next month. Unusually, mild weather in November and so far this month has moved the contrac tors away ahead of their build ing schedule. Weiss Not Candidate For AL Job Washington - (DPD - Boston General Manager Joe Cronin retained the inside track for the American league presi d e n c y today, particularly since General Manager George Weiss of the Yankees has turned down first crack at the job. Both Cronin and Weiss were approached by a six-man committee named to recom mend a successor to 72-year-old Will Harridge, who re signed at the winter baseball meetings here. - -No Hesitancy There was no hesitancy by Weiss in politely turning down the offer in favor of remaining with the world champion New Yorkers. He has broad authority in the Yankee system and probably draws about the same pay as he would as league chief. American league sources said that the offer to Weiss was in some respects a feature of respect to the Yankee gen eral manager's seniority and astuteness rather than a seri ous effort to deprive Cronin of the job. Famed Grid Scout Dies Hempstead, N.Y. -(DPD-Jack Lavelle, who was converted into a football scout by Knute Rockne 30 years ago and went on to become the game's greatest "spy," suffered a fatal heart attack Thursday night at his home. Lavelle, 52, had served as chief scout for the New York Giants for 27 years. Butte Falls was on top 36 to 35 after the second extra session but rules state that the winner in sudden death overtime is the first team to score two points. The teams were tied 35-all the end of regular playing time and there was no score in the first overtime. Loggers Knot The Loggers of Butte Falls knotted the action after trail ing 31 to 26 at the three quarter mark of the regular time. Butte Falls took an early 6-2 lead but Talent was in front 11 to 8 at the quarter and 24 to 19 at half time. David Baker's gift toss, making the count 36 to 35 gave the Loggers their only lead after the opening quarter. Seaver with 14 points and Duano Pittman with 11 led Talent's Bulldogs.
