Ort., Wednesday, December 3. 195 State Budgeteers Completing Work On Agency Requests Salem -O0- State budget- makers were on the final lap of their work here, today try ing to reconcile requests from numerous state agencies. One of their larger head aches has been requests from the State Board of Higher Ed ucation and the Board of Con trol for more than S30 million for building purposes. The higher education group seeks $20,565,000 for building on various campuses. Nv York Pkin, III. Souwlilo. Calif. two agencies will appear in the 1959-61 budget, but along side them will be recommen dations from Gov. Robert D. Holmes. Bond Issue Favored Gov. Holmes has indicated he favors that a bond issue be voted on by the people for building purposes which would make it much easier for the 1959 Legislature to find money enough to go around under the existing tax structure. Gov.-elect Mark Hatfield also can make recommenda tions to the Legislature, but hasn't made up his mind on the bond issue plan as yet. In the 1957 Legislature, both the Board of Higher Ed ucation and the Board of Con trol had about 50 per cent cut from what they had asked for capital improvements. ' Their requests this time are about 2V times what they were in 1957. Requests Listed ( Included in the Board' of Control budget is a new wom en's prison costing about Sl,- 815,000. It also seeks $2,223,- 550 for 500 more beds at Fairview home. For the first phase of Dam- nasch State hospital near Wil- sonville, some $1,696,203 will be needed. The Board ot Higher Edu cation as part of its. six-year, S60 million program seeks this time: University science building additions, $3,300,000; Portland State College class room building, $2,750,000; Oregon State physics-chemis try building addition, $2, 515,000; Portland State science building, $2,050,000; Oregon State agricultural and biological science building, $1,365,000; University medi cal school research building. $1,250,000; and a university library building addition, $1,- 100,000. r- ; it rn - w W : V I Tt t mil . At the same time, the East Berlin city government reiterated its demand that the West-, em Allies get out of Berlin. - Nine Injured as Bus Quits Road Three states have towns by the name of Romance. Oregon City - (UPD - Grey hound bus skidded off High way 99 Tuesday night about one mile north of Aurora, struck an embankment and broke off a power pole. Nine persons were taken to hos pitals in Oregon City. None of the injuries was considered serious and most persons were expected to be treated and released, attend ants said. The bus was northbound from Eugene to Portland. The accident occurred just before 7 p.m. State Police said the driver was Robert L. Barnett, 60, Eugene. At Doctor's hospital the in jured were: Mrs. Ethel Optiz, Portland, bruises; Mrs. Merle Weiss, Pasco, Wash., lacerated eye and bruises; Mrs. Vivian Hawley, Portland, injured nose; Howard Ellis, Roseburg, bruises, and Mrs. Aaron Thompson, West Linn, leg in jury, treated and released. At Oregon City hospital the injured were: William B. Nel son, 80, Portland, cut lip; Mrs. Edla Larsen; Portland, bruised arm and ribs, ankle and shoulder injuries; Lawrence Odell, 61, Portland, lip cuts, knee bruises, and Henry Kendsfather, 80, Portland, bruised shoulder, knee and hand injuries. Silverfon Phone Line Gets REA Loan Washington -(UPD- The Rur al Electrification Administra tion has approved a $1,172,000 loan to Valley Telephone com pany in Silverton, Ore., to im prove service, the office of Sen. Richard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.) said today. Improvements include dial telephone installations and ex tension of lines to serve 636 additional rural families in Marion and Linn counties. STEEL OFFICIAL DIES Allentown, 'Pa.-UPD-Thomas Richard Mullen, 65, of Brook lyn, N.Y., president of the Le high Structural Steel Co., died here Tuesday in Sacred Heart hospital of a heart attack. Two Seattle Men Missing on Flight Portland -UPD- Two Seattle men missing on a flight from Spray, Ore., to Seattle were being sought today by air and police authorities of Oregon and Washington. Object of the alert were W. K. Kelsay, 25, and Richard Jacobs, 33. They were flying a Piper Super Cruiser from Spray, according to the Civil Aeronautics Administration. The CAA said they were not reported missing until they failed to show up for work Tuesday. The missing plane is a yellow and red single-en gine, high wing model. Official Count of General Election Votes Completed Salem (UPD Secretary of State Mark Hatfield Tuesday issued the official count of votes for the November gen eral election. There were no major changes from previous unof ficial figures. Some 855,044 persons reg istered for the general elec tion and 599,959 of them vot ed in the race for governor. Of these, 331,900 voted for Republican Mark Hatfield and 267,934 for Democratic Gov. Robert D. Holmes. In congressional races, Re publican Walter Norblad beat Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton 95,423 to 78,362 in the first district. Second district finals gave Democrat Al Ullman an edge of 50,127 to 32,212 over Mar ion T. Weatherford. ' Third district results were Democratic Rep. Edith Green, 131,164 and John Johnson, 68,235. Charles O. Porter beat Re publican Paul Geddes in the fourth district, 79,166 to 61, 386. Tabulations of the labor commissioner race gave Demo crat Norman O. Nilsen 333, 074 to 234,406 for Republican Lyle E. McCauley. Army Ready For Moon Shot Cape Canaveral, Fla.-(UPD The Army appeared almost ready today to send its first moon rocket hurtling into un explored space in a vital radiation-measuring mission. The 140-foot-tall service tower of the Army's moon bird moved back from the ropket Tuesday, exposing a vehicle that bore a striking resemblance to the Jupiter-C rockets that put three satel lites into orbit in six tries. Although there has been no official announcement, the Army is expected to fire the tall Juno II rocket some time this week end. The Army's moon vehicle appeared fully assembled when it was revealed Tues day. And, since the Army al ways test fires the engines at its missile headquarters in Huntsville, Ala., prior to launching them here, it ap peared that only final checks were necessary prior to firing Dr. Wernher von Braun, German-born " Army missile chief, has said the Army will aim its rocket at the moon. But he said that because of the lack of an adequate guid ance seystem, the Juno II probably will miss the moon and eventually become a sat ellite of the sun, millions of miles away. DULLES TAKES REST Palm Springs, Calif.- (UPD -Secretary of State John Fos ter Dulles was resting at this desert resort today. He travels to San Francisco Thursday to attend a luncheon. Cardinal Given Extreme Unction Santiago -4UP&- Jose Maria Cardinal Caro-Rodriguez re ceived extreme unction Tues day night and fears arose for his life following a worsen ing of his physical condition. Caro, head of the Roman Catholic church in Chile, and, at 92, the oldest member of the Sacred College of Cardin als, has been . suffering from an intestinal infection since his return from the Vatican where he attended the con clave which elected Pope John XXUI. E. V. Cooke reported on the timber and mining show plans for the annual Labor Day celebration and his esti mated $1,500 budget to pro duce the shows was approved by the board. While the actual Jubilee celebration is scheduled for the three-day Labor Day holi day, there will be special events sponsored by the asso ciation during the 100 days Centenniel observance. Tenative plans were outlin ed for logging and mining ex cursions as attractions for the Centennial guests stopping in the valley. Details of the ev ents will be worked out with the Valley Centennial com mittee. Other special events and attractions were discussed, and it is planned that a pro gram will be ready for pre sentation about the first of the year.
