ALLEN A. - I could have told her she'd make things worse. BARBARA A. - I am in the middle of a conflict in volving my husband and his brother and sister-in-law. The sister-in-law has done many things to separate the two brothers who were very close as children. She ' said things against my husband and me to friends and rela tives. She did not invite us to her new home, yet com plained when she wasn't ask ed to one of our parties. The other day my brother-in-law called me and asked me to meet him to discuss ways of patching things up, I met him at a restaurant and he made terrible accusations against me and my husband, saying we did various things to hurt him. These things are all lies and we got into a bat tle royal. Now my husband accuses me of having made things worse. ALLEN A. - I feel that Barbara never should have made an appointment with my brother without consult ing me. I could have told her that it would only make mat ters worse. I feel that my brother is not a very strong person and he is completely dominated by Margaret, who is a vicious conniving woman. She has convinced him that we outdid him of a portion of our par ents' estate. My brother knows in his heart that I nev er would do a thing like that and the fact that he could say it makes me feel that a recon ciliation is impossible. I once had hopes that things would somehow straighten themselves out, but since these things were said, I feel we should insist on an apology-which we won't get. THE COUNCIL: "Patching up" sessions, unless conducted by the parties immediately concerned often become free- for-all brawls. We agree with Allen that Barbara should not have gotten involved in this controversy. Allen's hurt feelings on the whole subject are understand able, but we believe he is wrong to insist on an apology or to reconcile himself to life time estrangement from his brother. He should make a fight to save at least a portion of his once-happy relationship with his brother. Misunderstandings concern ing family financial affairs are common and if Allen has the right on his side he may very well convince his bro ther. If he is wrong in any way he would do well, for the sake of his own con science, to clear the matter up. The brother may at this time be dominated by a con niving wife, but it is possible that as time goes on he'll be gin to assert himself. If he is armed with correct informa tion and knows that he stands on firm ground from the eth ical point of view he'll be able to talk up to his wife. With a vicious woman in the background, it is doubt ful whether happy social re lations between these couples will ever exist. But it is to be hoped that the brothers can free themselves of suspic ion and bad feeling toward one another. (Copyright 1958, General Features Corp.)
