H. - I was widowed a few months ago and I am so lonely I just feel like dy ing. My son and daughter, who are both married, keep telling me that I am acting like a fool - that I have them and there is no reason to be lonely. But I can't help my self. I am sick of looking at the four walls. Another widow in the neigh borhood has been coming in to see me a lot, but my daugh ter chases her away. She says we are no good for each other because we just keep crying and talking about our troubles. It may sound silly, but even though I'm past 65 I would like to get married again. Just to have a compan ion all your own and not have to depend on your children for everything means a lot. My daughter thinks I am in sane when I talk like that. Emily K. - My brother and I have done our best to take good care of Mother since Dad died. We visit her at least once a day. I often stop in a couple of times to see how she is getting along. She has a nice home and garden to take care of and she could be content if she didn't keep brooding all the time or mak ing up crazy dreams about getting married. Mother doesn't seem to real ize that she would bring all kinds oi trouble on herself if she got married. No man is going to "marry her for her beauty at her age. As far as companionship is concerned, men manage to find it without marriage. The only reason anyone would marry Mom is for her money and her good cooking. With the two of us to look after her, Mom doesn't have to worry about anything. The Council: From both ac counts, it appears to us that Mrs. M. H. is being kept a prisoner by her son and daughter. Emily has her mother's sit uation all wrapped up. She knows exactly what her moth er should and shouldn't do. Even more, she knows what her mother shouldn't feel. She is taking such "good care" of her mother that she has decided to hold the keys to the woman's mind and heart. Mrs. M. H. now feels very helpless because of the shock of her recent loss. She has, therefore, allowed her chil dren to take her oyer lock, stock and barrel. She'll have to make an effort to free her self from them if she wishes to make a reasonably pleasant life for herself in the future. It is natural for Mrs. M. H. to think in terms of marriage as a way out of her loneliness, but marriages made for this sole reason are seldom suc cessful. Good marriages, even among elderly persons, usual ly come about as a result of happy and active living. We would suggest that Mrs. M. H. try to get active in her community and church. If she feels like having a good cry with a widow friend, she should do it. But there are other social relationships that she would enjoy discovering. If she thinks of this phase of her life as a brand new phase of a long voyage, she'll look forward to each day with some sense of adventure and will waste no time looking at the four walls.
