Use a double-faced corru gated cardboard, not a shoe or other thin cardboard, box. Leave at least two inches be tween the merchandise and the container and pack it with crumbled newspapei or other material to absorb shock. Wrap the outside with heavy plain wrapping paper and tie with strong cord. They'll usher in the holiday season with every instrument from the humble harmonica to the concert grand piano. According to the American Music conference, more chil dren and adults are playing as well as singing Christmas carols than ever before. In fact, many amateurs greet the holiday season with more than one instrument. Popular Instrument Most popular single instru ment for the center of family caroling sessions is the piano, says AMC. Approximately 20.500,000 homespun pianists will furnish the lead for such old favorites a s "Silent Night" and "O, Come All Ye Faithful." Adding to the swell of in strumental Christmas music are more than 3,000,000 vio lins and other strings. Ap proximaely 4,500,000 guitars will chord carol accompani ment. Almost 500,000 harmonicas, 1.500,000 accordions and 1, 600,000 ukeleles - popular re creatonal instruments in any season - will once again pro vide holiday harmony. Special Groups ' A host of the nation's school children youngsters who make up the bulk of the 4, 625,000 brass and woodwind players comprise special in strumental caroling groups. These brass choirs and wood wind ensembles make presen tations at regular school pro grams and in house-to-house tours. Primary benefits of this wealth of musical activity at Christmas time, says AMC, is worthwhile recognition for the youngsters, creative use of holiday leisure time for adults and closer family ties built by bringing both children and parents into joint participation. Extra Assurance For extra assurance, pur chase low rate postal insur ance on every package. Aso, insert a small piece of paper with the recipient's address as well as your own. If the out side is damaged, your package may still be delivered. Fragile items should be packed individually with some absorbent material, es pecially if they could leak. Most anything can be sent through the mail ex cept liquor, firearms, explo sives, inflamable materials and obscene articles. Don't forget that there are new postal rates now. Three Cents Any package weighing less than one pound goes at three cents for the first two ounces and one half cents for each additional ounce. v There is a 20-pound limit on parcel post sent between first class post offices. Packages cannot exceed 72 inches in combined length and girth. Packages sent between other than first class post of fices can weigh up to 70 pounds and can be as large as 100 inches in combined length and girth. If in doubt about whether you are sending from and to a first class post office, or about any other postal re quirements, be sure to check with posal authorities. Deadlines Set To help decide . when to mail your packages, deadlines have been set up for various parts of the country and are displayed in the post office. Should you miss a deadline use air parcel post and special delivery. The postal service does everything possible to see that your packages arrive in good shape on time . . . but you must do your part, too. Carols are usually either re ligious or convivial. The re ligious carols are often in cluded in church services, and hail the birth of the Holy Child. The convivial exalt the fun and festivities of the season. Just about the best known and best loved Christmas Carol, "Silent Night" is com paratively recent, having been composed in the early 19th Century by Franz Gru ber and Fr.
