12 MAIL TRIBUNE, Mtdford, Oregon, Sunday, November 23. 195S Four Big Teams Get Berths Gn Various Bowl Events; HSU Roils Over Tulane 62-0 Louisiana State, California, Texas Christian and Syracuse all landed bowl berths Satur day but outsider Harvard wasn't the least bit envious because of grabbing off what it considered the biggest plum of all a victory over arch rival Yale. - Louisiana State, the na tion's No. 1 team, "bowled" a perfect season in a manner of speaking by crushing Tu lane, 62-0, to wind up the year with an untarnished 10-0 record and a New Year's day date in the Sugar Bowl. A crowd of 85,000, largest ever to see a regular season football game in the south, saw underdog Tulane hold mighty L.S.U. to a 6-0 margin for the first half, then watch ed the Tigers rip the Green Wave for eight touchdowns In the second half at New Orleans. Johnny Robinson scored four touchdowns and Billy Cannon three to lead L.S.U. to its first perfect season in 50 years. California clinched the Pa cific Coast conference cham pionship and Rose Bowl date with Iowa with a come-from-behind 16-15 triumph over Stanford at Berkeley, Calif. The Golden Bears trailed 9-8 at half-time, then went ahead to stay in the third period on Jack Hart's touch down plunge and a two-point pass play for Joe Kapp to Wayne Crow, Stanford scor ed again with a minute re maining in the game and might have tied the score with a placement kick. The Indians went for all-or-nothing, however, and their at tempt to run the ball for two points failed. TCU Gets Championship Texas Christian won the Southwest conference cham pionship and the Cotton bowl berth that goes with it by rolling over Rice, 21-0. Marv LaSater and Jack Spikes scored the only touchdowns, the Horned Frogs needed in the second period and a Larry Dawson-Jimmy Gilmore pass added another in the final per iod. Syracuse accepted an invi tation to play Oklahoma in the Orange bowl after fash lomng a 15-12 victory over West Virginia, which had crack at the same berth if it could score an upset. Chuck Zummerman tossed two touch down passes to end Dave Bak er in Syracuse's eighth victory of the season and seventh in a row. But Harvard nailed down the real "big one" of the day by pounding Yale, 28-0, in the traditional game they wait for, sing songs about and mull over for years. Sophomore quarter back Charlie Ravenel scored Har vard's first touchdown and directed the Crimson to two others in helping the winners atone for three straight losses to Yale, including a 54-0 hu miliation last year. Big Ten champion Iowa warmed up for its Rose bowl appearance with a 31-21 win over Notre Dame. Willie Fleming scored two of the Hawkeyes' five touchdowns as they scored their seventh victory in nine games this sea son. Oklahoma Gets Title Oklahoma, the fourth rated team in the country, wallop ed Nebraska, 40-7, to win its straight Big Eight conference title. The Sooners grabbed a 21-point lead in the first per iod and had things all their own way in reeling off their 71st consecutive league vic tory without a defeat. Dartmouth won the Ivy League championship by whipping Princeton, 21-12. A year ago, the same two teams came down to the wire for the title and Princeton won, 34-14. Quarterback Bill Gundy of Dartmouth scored one touchdown, passed for an other and set up a third. Duke ruined North Caro lina's Sugar bowl hopes with a 7-6 upset victory, with Wray Carlton scoring the Blue Devils' touchdown and then kicking the decisive point in the third period. Glen Shaw's 24-yard touch down run gave Kentucky a 6-2 win over Tennessee in one of the South's oldest and bit terest rivalries, while Indiana, a 15-point underdog, held Purdue to a 15-15 tie in an other traditional battle. In other leading games: Wisconsin nailed down sec ond place in the Big Ten con ference with a 27-12 victory Minnesota; Maryland mauled Virginia, 44-6; the Air Force academy kept rolling toward a possible Cotton bowl berth with a 45-7 triumph over New Mexico; Illinois defeated Northwestern, 27-20; South Carolina . conquered North Carolina State, 12-7; Florida humbled Florida State, 21-7; Georgia massacred the Cita del, 76-0; Auburn beat Wake Forest, 21-7; Clemson kept its bowl hopes alive with a 34-12 victory over Boston college, and Bill Austin scored 34 points while leading Rutgers to a 61-0 victory over Colum bia. . . Mt. Shasta Ski Opening Postponed Mt. Shasta, Calif., Calif. Official opening of the $2,000, 000 Mt. Shasta Ski Bowl, the biggest ski bowl in America, has been rescheduled for early December, it was an nounced yesterday. Mt. Shasta Ski officials had tentatively planned- to open on Thanksgiving Day, but de cided against it because of a lack of snow. The lack of snow in 1958 marks only the third time in the past 70 years that Mt. Shasta has not had enough snow to ski in mid- November. To Be Announced "We still might have skiable snow by Thanksgiving," said officials Elmer Kennedy and Chapman Wentworth, "but rather than take any chances, we've decided to reschedule the official opening fot early in December. The actual date will be announced later." They added, "When we do open our facilities, we want them to be as ready as possi ble for all skiers." As of Thursday, Nov. 20, there were from 8 to 12 inches of snow on the ground. Meanwhile, the mayors of Mt. Shasta, Dunsmuir, Weed, and other Siskiyou cdunty communities announced pre liminary plans for a Snow Festival sometime in December. NAIA PICKS FIELD Kansas City, Mo. (CPD Skelly Field in Tulsa, Okla., has been named by the Na tional Association of Intercol legiate Athletics as the site of one of the NAIA football playoff games on Dec. 6. Midgets To Be On Ring Affair At Grants Pass ' Grants Pass-Promoter Elton Owen will present his big gest card of the year this Tuesday night, Nov. 25 at Grants Pass. A group of the reknowned wrestling midgets headed by the best of them all, Little Beaver, will appear as a .special added attraction. Little Beaver, the little In dian with the Mohawk hair cut, will team up with Tiny Tim against Fuzzy Cupid and Irish Jackie in a tag team match. These little guys who are all under four feet tall and weigh around 90 pounds give the fans an evening of hilari ous entertainment. They take their lumps and they wow the crowd. Beaver never stops moving once he enters the ring and his antics are worth the price of admission. The main event will feature Luther Lindsey, recent win ner over Eric Pederson, against Kurt von Poppen heim, the proud Prussian, de feated Luigi Macera on the local card and says he is all set to work Lindsey over. Pederson defeated Ed Francis in Portland last week and an nexed the Pacific coast heavy weight title. Extra Importance Both Poppenheim and Lind sey would like to get a crack at Pederson for that title so it puts extra importance on this match. Poppenheim spe cializes in the deadly cross bow hold plus his usual rough tactics to gain him victory. Lindsey is a great wrestler and his head butts and full nelsons are vicious. Luigi Macera will tangle with Tony Ferraza in the opening match. Macera, who is popular here, will be favor ed to defeat his less experi enced opponent. Macera is a talented French-Italian who learned his wrestling around Montreal. Ringside tickets for this card will be on sale at "The Downtowner" in Grants Pass. Doors will open at 7 p.m. with matches scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Final Tribute Paid Mefl Otf, Home funding New Orleans -(DPD- The sports world paid final trib ute Saturday to Mel Ott, hall of fame baseball figure and National league home run king. Funeral services for the modern day hero of the New York Giants were held at 12 o'clock noon PST, Saturday at the McMahon Funeral home in New Orleans. Burial was in Metairie cemetery. Lutheran religious rites were held at the family home in Metairie, a New Orleans su burb. None of the host "of base ball greats who expressed a desire to pay their last re spects attended the simple services. The immediacy pf the funeral prevented others from attending, and a few paid their respects as the body lay in state Friday night. But the majority of base ball players who knew and loved the former player and manager of the New York Gi ants during 22 years with the National league team express ed their sympathy to the Ott family with telegrams 'and wired flowers. Ott's brother, Charles, said the messages from across the nation, "too numerous to try to count," had poured into the family's suburban New Or leans home since Ott's death. Banks of flowers lined the funeral home where the ser vices were held. Slightly more than' 100 persons attend ed the services. But in another part of New Orleans, more than, 81,000 football fans, at the Sugar Bowl to see the Louisiana State-Tulane football game, paused for a minute of silent tribute to the little man who swung such a big bat. Friday Has Kidney Infection Ott, 49, died after a desper ate attempt by doctors to ov ercome a kidney infection called uremia. Cycle Run Scheduled Motorcycle riders of Oregon and northern California will tour 62 miles of the Rogue valley today in the fifth an nual cross country turkey run of White's Cycle Center. Entrants are asked to sign in before 9:30 a.m. at the cycle shop, 3330 North Pacific highway. Riders will leave at one-minute intervals begin ning at 10 a.m. A check point system will be used to deter mine the winner and other top places. A turkey scramble will be held after the run is com pleted with all riders finish ing the cross country ride eli gible to participate. Transhooters In Event Today Trapshooters will gather at Medford Gun club today for the pre-Thanksgiving turkey shoot. Traps are to open at 10 a.m. with shooting in classes and in 16-yard and handicap rival ry. Events are planned for non-shooters. Curry, driver of the other car, and critically in jured 'Ott's wife, Mildred. Ott's condition took a sud den turn for the worse Thurs day. He was transferred to a New Orleans hospital, where he underwent surgery late Thursday night. He died as a team of eight doctors, who had worked around the clock to save him, prepared to connect a ma chine to aid his failing kid neys. The artificial kidney machine had been used suc cessfully while Ott's kidneys had been blocked off in the eight-hour operation Thurs day night. Ott is survived by his wi dow, two daughters, his moth er, a brother and sister, and a grandson, all from the New Orleans area, , His wife has not been in formed of her husband's death because physicians fear the shock would be too much for her condition to bear. ?v. - MEL OTT DIES Former New York Giants' star Mel Ott (here shown in 1937 file photo) lost his battle for life in New Orleans, La., where a team of eight doctors had worked around the clock in -an effort to save his life.
