! TCU Goes for Broke for Bowl Bid in Encounter With Rice SHOP EARLY for CHRISTMAS ... at SPECIAL SAVINGS 14 MAIL TRIBUNE. Medfors', Oreaon. Fruity, November 2T, 1938 , f MEDFORD 1 4. United Press International California and Texas Chris tian practically "go for broke" Saturday when they make their bowl bids in the final big week end of the 1958 college football cam paign. Victories by the West Coast's Golden Bears and TCU's Horned Frogs mean invita tions to the Rose Bowl and Cotton Bowl. ' The situation can become confused, however, should these teams drop their Satur day encounters. California (5-1) in the Pa cific Coast conference, has to beat hapless Stanford (2-7) to wrap up a .Tournament of Roses meeting with Iowa, Big Ten champion. However, Wisconsin Picked to End Second Chicago-UPD-Wisconsin was favored to finish the Big Ten football season in. second place by beating Minnesota Saturday, and Purdue looked like a good bet for third place. The Badgers, who have won four, lost one and tied one in the conference, were a 14 point choice to get by the Gophers and close with a 5-1-1 record, or only one tie worse than the championship 5-1-0 slate of Iowa. ' Purdue, the league's best defensive team, figured also to be the better offensive team in its battle with Indiana Saturday for the Old Oaken bucket. The oddsmakers have made the Boilermakers 15 point favorites for a victory that would give them a third place finish with a 4-1-1 rec ord. Em Picks Northwestern and Illinois were even picks in their bat tle at Champaign with a first division berth at stake. Each has an identical conference mark of three victories and three defeats. Ohio State was the favorite by two touchdowns in its fi nale with Michigan at Colum bus, Ohio. The Buckeyes will be seeking their fourth Big Ten success against one set back and two ties. The Wol verines will be out for their second victory over a confer ence rival. Iowa and Michigan State, who finished their seasons last Saturday on opposite ends of the standings meet non conference foes. " The Hawkeyes were six point favorites in their tradi tional tussle with Notre Dame and the Spartans, who failed to win a conference game in six starts, were 14-point selec tions over Kansas State. Elgin Baylor Shows Talents - United Press International Rookie Elgin Baylor took his AU-American talents to Minneapolis and now is mak ing his presence felt in the National Basketball associa tion. Baylor, the Laker fresh man from Seattle university, took over the NBA scoring lead Thursday night as he led Minneapolis to a 121-102 comeback victory over Syra cuse. Dropping in 37 points, Bay lor pushed Detroit's George Yardley out of the top spot by posting a 322 total for the sea son, 15 more than the Pis ton's 1957 - 58 NBA scoring king. To further confuse the issue, if all three lose and Southern California beats UCLA, the Trojans and Bears then will be tied for the loop lead. TCU can avoid similar con fusion in the Southwest con ference by beating Rice. An upset by the Owls will force a delay in naming the Cotton Bowl entry until the following Saturday. Bowl Prestige on Lin The Air Force Academy, West Virginia, Syracuse and Clemson put their bowl pres tige on the line as they try to cement New Year's Day berths. . The Air Force Falcons, whose tie with Iowa mars a perfect record, is reported re ceptive to a Sugar or Orange Bowl bid. A win over New Mexico may clinch one for the airmen. Syracuse and West 'Virginia are in a precarious situation as they meet Saturday. The Green Bay Packers' end, who is president of the NFL Players association, ac cused Bell of a "lot of conver sation" and no results on play er demands. He said owners have been disregarding pre vious promises to the associa tion. Howton specifically accus ed owner George Marshall of the Washington Redskins of being a "tightwad." Howton said Bell and three club owners last February promised the association the rights for selling players pic tures in packaged bubble gum would be turned over to the players. To Commissioner "It (the money) all goes to the commissioner now. They are our pictures and we think we should get the money. But all we have received from Bell's office is continuous in terference," Howton said. In referring to Marshall as a "tightwad," Howton said team owners last spring had agreed to pay players $50 per pre-season game above their regular contracts. Howton said members of the Redskins have not been paid yet for the games played before the Sept. 28 start of the season. He explained some Redskins waived the money in signing 1958 contracts for higher salaries, "but not all of them and they want their money." The Packer star said that last spring the owners were presented with proposals to include a pension plan and hospitalization and other ben efits in contracts, "but we haven't heard from them since." He said the owners also disregarded a proposal to form a player-owner commit tee to help resolve differences between them. price with any other gallon. Quick service everywhere.-.
