Those from Canada were Geraldine Frances McCalvey, Central Point; Christine Le on Therres, 2349 Highway 66, Ashland; Ruby May De Lisle, 611 West 10th st., Med ford; Valerie Ann Harrett and David Allen Harrett, 231 Ol well Way, Medford; Peter Thomas Trim, 716 West 14th st., Medford; Reginald Run dolp Sampson and Edith Eve lyn Sampson, 3653 South Pa cific highway, Medford; Pa tricia Ann Clough, 921 Mt. Pitt st., Medford; and Agnes Grace Irby, box 436, Jackson ville. Other newly naturalized county citizens and their for mer nationalities are: Otto Carl Pfahler,, Talent, Ger many; Ernest Richard Stamm, 1315 West Main st., Medford, Germany; Joan Woodhead, 1132V4 B-, Court st., Medford, England; and Tatsumi Hoser, 2988 Madrona lane, Medford, Japan. Mark S. - I don't want to see it. Louise S. I made a ter rible mistake and I want to put my life back in order as best I can. After a marriage of two years, I fell deeply in love with another man and got in volved in an affair with him. Now I am expecting a baby and there is doubt about the parentage of the "child. The man I was involved with in sists that the baby couldn't have been his and washes his hands of the whole thing. My husband said he doesn't ever want to see this child. He is willing to take me back and forgive me. My husband says the child should be given out for adop tion, but I don't want to part with my baby. In view of the fact that there is a good pos sibility that the child ' could be my husband's shouldn't he be more willing to at least see the child? Mark S. I don't care even if the baby is mine. I just don't want to see it. Maybe I'm being too hard about it, but I can't help myself. I know that every time I look at the child I'll wonder. I don't trust myself to be a proper father to the child. I feel that Louise and I can start all over again fresh. I still love her in spite of everything and I believe she has learned her lesson and is able to settle down and be a good wife. I realize that it is hard for a mother to give up her child, but after all, Louise can't ex pect to get away with murder. She should realize she has done a terrible thing and she'll have to suffer for it. It isn't easy for me either and I think Louise should appre ciate how decent I've been. The Council: Mark is right on at least one point. There is no easy way out of this mistake." But he overlooks the fact the solution he pro poses is also an easy way Right now, he believes it is the way that would be most painful to Louise and least painful to himself. However, time might change this. No body knows what the future will be and Mark fails to recognize that the child he now disowns could be a bless ing to him. We aren't suggesting that Mark should agree to keep the child while he is in his present frame of mind. We do suggest, how ever, that Mark explore his feelings and consider his po sition more deeply. Both Louise and Mark prob ably need some trained, com petent help in arriving at a decision. A clergyman . will help them to explore some of the moral aspects of their problem and a family agency social worker will help them to understand some of the problems they will have to face - whatever direction they choose as their-solution. It 'is entirely possible that, after a more thorough airing of the problem, Louise will be' the one who -favors adoption In any case, this couple should avoid making a de cision until they have con sidered every aspect of the problem and arrive at a point where each is in some mea sure satisfied with the solu tion. Then, whatever the fu ture brings, they should have no cause to blame one another or themselves. Long Gas Price War Predicted Portland -(UPD- The current Willamette valley gasoline price war may "last all win ter or indefinitely unless something happens soon," an official of the Oregon Gas Dealers Association predicted today. J. S. (Shell) Baker, busin ess manager of the Associa tion, said a long price war "would be disastrous for the 55,000 to 65,000 people in Oregon who are directly de pendent on the retail service station industry for their live lihood." Baker called upon major oil companies to make a "re alistic reduction" in whole sale gasoline prices. Prices were down to 25.9 and 26.9 cents a gallon for regular gasoline here. Chemical Matter In Female Muscles Resembles Eggs By DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor New York - (UPD - Certain radioactive substances and chemical compounds when put into fe male muscles or blood streams end up in. close proximity t o the eggs from which spring human lives. This new Deios smith sciemiiic una is basic in science's worries over the inherited make-ups of future generations because today's parents are subjected to radiation and chemical haz ards their own progenitors never had. Science already knew for facts that (1) radioactive sub stances and some .chemicals will cause germ cells to j "mu tate" or change and (2) those substances get into human bodies. But it didn't know for sure until now that they get to the reproductive chem istry even when they enter bodies in places remote from that chemistry. Provided Missing Link Drs. Kurt N. von Kaulla, Jerry K. Aikawa, and John D. Pettigrew of- the Univer sity of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver, provided this missing link in precise scientific knowledge through relatively simple and harm less experiments in 29 female bodies. These women were under going hysterectomies for com pelling medical reasons, which meant their reproductive tracts were exposed surgical ly. .Before surgery, one o r more of the following sub stances was put into their bodies, either by injection into a vein or muscle or mouth: The radioactive isotope, io-dine-131; (human gamma glo bulin) "tagged" with iodine 131; surgical medications "tag ged" with the radioactive iso topes, carbon-14 or mercury 203. Medications included the tranquilizing drug, meproba mate, and penicillin. Substances Were Present During surgery, samples were taken of the fluid of the cells which surround the egg producing organs and through which eggs pass. In all cases, the injected and mouth-taken substances were present. In deed, there was some suggest ed that they were "concen trated." There w a s no suggestion that either meprobamate or for seasoning that's sweetening.. 5 White Satin SUGAR penicillin is capable of caus ing germ cells to mutate. Nei ther have that power. But some chemical compounds do have that power, and there is no doubt of radiation either from x-rays or the "fallout" from atomic explosions, hav ing that power. The scientists reported to the international technical journal, "Nature," that their studies "suggested" the hu man egg is "exposed to ther apeutic agents introduced in to the general circulation." They said they did not know whether drugs present with the ovarian fluid could do harm to the egg. " But they're going to find out. They said they were cur rently trying to show whether the substances conveyed to the fluid "actually penetrate into the egg proper."
