Rogers signs papers settling last of 26,552 claims by Japanese Nisei who were moved from West Coast area- Slate Prolected Land Had 272 Fires A total of 272 fires occur red on state-protected land in the Southwest district of the state department of forestry during the 1958 fire season, District Warden Curt Nes heim reported Wednesday. The number is more than double the 118 recorded in 1957., Nesheim attributed the larger total this year to light ning and a longer siege of "fire weather." Summer and early fall were hot and ex tremely dry. Lightning caused 127 fires compared to nine in 1957. A total of 145 fires this year wers lifted as maa-caused. The number was 118 in the previous season. Fires during 1958 burned approximately 1,200 acres in the district. Acreage burned in 1957 was 714. Largest blaze of the past season swept over 396 acres on Sardine creek. It broke out on Aug. 19 and was listed as man-caused. Madden Honored at Lions Club Dinner Phoenix Ernest Marvin Madden, county clerk elect, was honored at a Lions club dinner here this week. Guests included Circuit Judge Edward Kelly, Sheriff Elect Joseph Walsh, Coroner Carlos Morris, State Sentor Elect Dr. Edwin Durno, State Representative Robert Duncan and William Deatherage, cam paign manager for Madden in the recent campaign. Madden's father, Ernest S. Madden, also was present.
