12 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford-, Wednesday, November 19, 1958 Rockefellers Close-Knit Clan; Differences in Temperament Editor's note: Thl U the last of three articles on Nelson Rocke feller, who recently defeated Av erell Rarrlman for the governor ship of New York. By JACK V- FOX UPI Correspondent NewYork - (CPU - On the 56th floor of the central sky scraper in the towers of Roc kefeller Center Is a door with the lettering: "Rockefeller, office of the messrs." Behind that door are the offices of the world's wealth iest clan John D. Jr., 84, and four of his five sons: John D. HI, 52; Nelson, 50; Laur ance, 48; and David, 43. If necessary, space can be found for Winthrop, 46, and for the one sister, Mrs. Abbe Mauze, 54. Nelson, governor-elect of New York and a 1960 Repub lican presidential possibility, Is now by far the best known of the Rockefellers. But this Is a close-knit family and sel dom does one take a major step without counceling the others. Nelson, for example, asked his father and brothers to meet with him in suite 5600 last winter before making the final decision to put a Rocke feller in the political arena. Tremendous Fortune Each of the grandchildren of the late John D. has a for tune of more than $100 mil lion. The father's wealth is estimated at more than $500 million. The family is estim ated to have given away $2 billion altogether ranging from the dimes John D. pass ed out to such vast projects as buying up a vast tract in the Grand Tetons and donat ing it as a nationl park. The brothers are consider ably different in temperament and ambition. John D. Ill calls himself "the shy one." His main occu pation is to administer the Rockefeller Foundation, the giant philantropic trust which has given away more than $565 million and still has nearly $600 million left. He is also interested in the arts and hopes to create in New York a Lincoln center for the performing arts, mak ing it the focal point for the finest talent in music, danc ing and drama. Mrs. Mauze, wife of a bank er, is the "silent partner" in the Rockefeller enterprises and also a reserved woman who had devoted her time to her family. Laurance Invests in Gadgets Nelson is the one with the greatest drive for public rec ognition. Laurance is looked upon as the most ambitious specula tor. After donating half the Island of St. John in the Vir gin Islands as a nationl park, he has built on remaining property a magnificent luxury housing colony. He has a fancy for invest ing in gadgets, electronic de vices and supersonic aircraft. One of his first and best in vestments was in Eastern Air lines. Winthrop lives apart from the family. He settled $6 mil lion on Bobo Rockefeller in their divorce and then moved to Arkansas where he created a huge model farm. He is now married to the former Mrs. Jeanette Edris. Winthrop is the only one of the boys to do hard work with his hands. A youth of six feet three and weighing 225 pounds, he dropped out of Yale and went to work as a hand in the Texas oil fields. He spent five years in the Army and was wounded off Okinawa. David, the youngest broth er, is "the serious one." He is vice chairman of the board of the Chase Manhattan bank. It is estimated that the family gives away $7 million a year exclusive of the myriad grants made by the Rockefeller Foun dation. They are active in about 200 philantropic causes. As a result, helicopters spray coffee trees in Brazil; low-cost houses are built in Baghdad; astronomers search the skies from Mt. Lions Club Makes Smorgasbord Plans Shady Cove-Final plans are being made this week by Shady Cove-Trail Lions club members for a smorgasbord which they will sponsor Sat urday, Nov. 22, at Rogue Ri ver lodge, near Trail. Serving hours will be from 7 p.m. to midnight. The public is invit ed. Live music is planned for entertainment. Tickets will be available at the door. Proceeds from the event will be used toward sight con servation work and eye glass es for needy persons, mainly school children in the area, Don Harmon, secretary-treasurer of the club, announced. Wendell Stalker, president, is in charge of all-over plans and Paul Bulkin heads the dinner committee. Committee members now working on the plans include Ray Chubb, Paul Davis, Wil liam Ducker," Athel Dudley, Frank Fagalde, Everett Elrod, Delbert Spain, Don Harmon, Erwin Howe, Harry Goode, Ted Jantzer, Floyd Kelley, Earl Shephard, Jack Silvers, O. L. (Pop) Williams, John Ainsley, Gus Olson and Garry Sullivan. Shady Cove-Trail Lions club also sponsor the street lighting in Shady Cove as well as participate in holiday proj ects and other benefits for their vicinity.
