10 MAIL TRIBUNE, MedforJ, Oregon, Tuesday, November 18, 1958 Oregon Cities Delegates Hear Walter Pearson Eugene -CP&- A Democratic gtate senator said Monday the 1959 Legislature should not "go on a spending spree" be cause it would mean more taxes. State Sen. Walter Pearson of Portland, top candidate for president of the Senate, said the Legislature may have to change exemption provisions of the income tax structure to provide more money. 'But he said the income tax rate should not be increased. Pearson spoke to the League of Oregon Cities convention. He is chairman of the Legis lative Interim Tax Study Com mittee. Stand on Sales Tax Speaking on a sales tax which he has long opposed, Pearson said that if a sales tax ever were necessary in Oregon he would insist it be used to offset property taxes in amount of sales tax re turned to local government. Mayor Terry Schrunk of Portland told delegates that Oregon cities should work to gether to get more tax rev enue. He said cities have been losing the fight for tax money. Mayor George Christopher of San Francisco was to ad dress tonight's banquet. Gov. Robert D. Holmes cancelled bis appearance because of minor eye infection. Urges Participation One of the speakers Mon day was Gerry Frank, general manager of Salem's Meier and Frank Department . store and chairman of the city's Com mittee on Governmental Coop eration. He told the delegates all citizens should participate in government. Frank also outlined a "massive coopera tion plan" he said Marion and Polk counties had with the state, the city of Salem and the Salem schol district. SHADY COVE-TRAIL Smorgasbord Scheduled By EVALYN P. WATSON Shady Cove The Shady Cove-Trail Lions club is spon soring a smorgasbord Satur day, Nov. 22, from 7 p.m. un til midnight at the Rogue Riv er Lodge. Paul Bulkin, a lion member, will cook for the smorgasbord and on the menu will include roast turkey, beef, ham, cold cuts, salads, baked beans, pickled herring, cheese and relishes. Proceeds from the dinner go toward one of the Lion's main projects, helping to pro vide glasses for children in the community who could not otherwise afford them and to aid the blind. Last year the Lions club provided glasses for three children. Harry Hastings of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, has been vis iting his sister, Mrs. Zella Tul lis of Trail. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Goode and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Jant zer of Shady Cove are vaca tioning in Reno, Nev. The Saturday afternoon matinee movies sponsored by the Shady Cove PTA will start Nov. 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the school gym. The first mov ie will be "Little Nellie Kelly." Dulles Slates Talk; Five-Day Vacation Washington -UPD- Secretary of State John Foster Dulles flies to Cleveland today to make a speech and then take a five-day pre-Thanksgiving vacation. Dulles will speak this aft ernoon to the National Coun cil of Churches of Christ. The State Department said his talk would be a general re view of foreign policy questions. Ted Conway and Ed Stro ther of Shady Cove have op ened an office in Eagle Point and are representing W. A. Darling, Real Estate firm, and the Hamilton Investment fund here. Strother worked for a num ber of years for the internal revenue department in Wash ington, D.C., and was a li censed Certified Public Ac countant. Conway plans to continue his construction work in the Shady Cove-Trail-Eagle Point area and will assist as neces sary with otlrer office routine. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chubb and daughter, Suzi, of Shady Cove, went to Eugene Veter ans Day where they visited Phyllis Briggs at the Univer sity of Oregon. Cuban Rebels Kill Four, Wound Eight Havana -0JPD- Rebel tommy gunners killed four and wounded eight policemen here Monday night in a gang-style massacre apparently inspired by the police slaying of four insurgents 10 days ago, it was reported today. Gunmen poured a murder ous crossfire into the ranks of police going off duty at the 15th Precinct in suburban Marianao. Four were willed and seven wounded. , The eighth policeman was wounded a few blocks from the station, apparently as the gunmen fled from the scene. Although none of the kill ers was positively identified, police said there is no doubt they were rebels avenging the killing of insurgent leader Angel Machaco Almejeira and three of his band in suburban Vibora a week ago Saturday. DUAL FUNERAL RITES Shelby, N.C. (UPD Funeral services were held Monday for Oscar Peter Riviere, 92, and his wife, 72, who died within a three-hour period Sunday. They had been mar ried 55 years. Pettey, regional rep resentative, has announced. Class will meet once a month beginning on Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in room 252 at Medford High school. Orienting toward a practi cal approach, case presenta tions will be utilized to insti gate discussion, to formulate dynamics, and to explore problems of teacher-child re lationships. Dr. Edward M. Scott, con sultant psychologist of the Oregon state board of health, will teach the class. Meningitis Victim Said 'Doing Nicely' Pendleton -(UPD Dr. Walter P. Browne, Umatilla county health officer, said today that a Pendleton boy who came down with infectious menin gitis last week is "doing nice ly" and that no new cases have? been reported although a busload of other students had apparently been exposed. Other children were be lieved exposed on a school bus which the boy, a foyrth grader at Lincoln school here, was riding. Browne said most of the children had been treat ed as a preventative measure. Newcomers to Shady Cove who will live here while the work is being done on the Lake of the Woods road pro ject by the bureau of public roads are Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Briggs and 3-months-old son, John. Other news among the BPR people living in the Shady Cove-Trail area is the birth of a baby girl to Mr. and Mrs. Don Nogode of Shady Cove. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces. BortMt St., SPring 2-6101 Crescent City Logger Crushed To Death Gold Beach -(DPD A Cres cent City, Calif., logger was crushed to death by a log Monday in an accident 15 miles east of Brookings on Wheeler creek. The victim was identified as Jack 'Bier ward, 48. Bierward was employed as a rigging slinger for DeFoe Logging Co., a subcontractor for Brookings Plywood. FAMILY SIZE INCREASE Washington -(UPD- The baby boom of the 1940's has swol len the size of i the average American family. The Census Bureau reported Monday that from 1948 to 1958, the num ber of families with two or more children . under 18 liv ing at home rose from 11, 200,000 to 16,400,000. Salvage Timber in Grayback Is Sold Cave Junction-The S H and W Lumber company of Grants Pass was successful bidder Monday on a Siskiyou Nation al Forest salvage timber in the Grayback Creek area. Bids were opened at the Illi nois Valley Ranger station. The bid was $33.92 on the 1,640,000 board feet of doug las fir, S32 on the 85,000 board feet of sugar pine, and $20 on the 150,000 board feet Port Orford cedar and other species for a total value of $61,348.80. Four sealed bids were re ceived by the forest service, the second bidder was Rough and Ready. Other bidders were Southern Oregon Ply wood and Cabax Mills. Hatfield Says GOP Must Gel New Blood Corvallis (DPD - Governor elect Mark Hatfield, in his first major speech in Oregon since the election, told the Benton County Republican Women's club here Monday that the GOP party of Oregon as well as in other states must shed its anti-labor tag and draw new blood if it is to suc ceed in 1960. Hatfield said while there are a few "unsavory bosses" in the top echelons of labor, the rank and file of local lead ers have the same hopes and desires as other citizens. Hatfield said the right to work bills were the downfall of the Republican party in the last election. Boy's Body Recovered From Isthmus Slough , Coos Bay -(UPD- The body of a 13-year-old Millington boy, Philip Ray Morgan, was recovered Sunday from Isth mus Slough, the Coos county sheriff's office reported.
