Mother gets on our nerves. Matthew S. It is the daugh, teri responsibility to take care of her. Mildred M. I have been married less than a year. Shortly after my marriage my father died. My husband and I asked my mother to come and live with us at once. Mother kept saying she didn't want to interfere with our lives, but we insisted that she would be no trouble to us. Well, things haven't worked out as we had hoped. Mother does get on our nerves in many little ways. She seems to think she still has the right to tell me what to do and not to do. She gets hurt if we don't include her in all pur activities. I think that If she stayed with my brother and his fam ily, she would keep more to herself. My brother and his wife have three small chil dren and she could help them out. My sister-in-law is a very strong person and Mother wouldn't try to boss her as she does me. Matthew S. This is but one of the ways said to both of us that she was so happy she had a daughter, because it is much easier for an elderly woman to live with a daughter than a daughter-in-law. She said she would always feel un wanted, like a stranger in the house, if she had to live, with a daughter-in-law. Mother understands very well that my wife doesn't want her to live with us. If I were to ask her to make the change, she would immediate ly understand that Millie doesn't want her. It would be like kicking her out in the cold. Everyone knows that it is the girl's responsibility to take care of a widowed moth er. Millie shouldn't try to duck out. She must learn to cope with the problem. She should tell Mother off when she has to in order to insure her freedom. The Council: It Is import ant to note that Mother has been completely left out of these negotiations between brother and sister. It is very likely that Mother has been finding life with Mil dred and her husband to be quite a trial. This woman evi dently had a particular plan for her life as a widow, but like many women in this spot. she finds that things aren't working out according to her dream picture. Even with the best inten tions in the world, parents find it almost impossible to. refrain from interfering in their children's lives. Often, they claim that they are not "interfering" merely ex pressing an opinion. But the authority that the parent's word has always carried is a factor in taking away a child's own feeling of power and in dependence. The parent simi larly feels deprived of power, and hence, cast out, when a grown son or daughter flouts him. This mother made a mis take in accepting her daugh ter's hospitality before she had a chance to think seriously and calmly about her widow hood. In her sadness and lone liness, she accepted the appar ently easy solution. But the time has come for her to re evaluate her future. If she is in good health, she may very well be ready to consider liv ing alone or with another! woman. Some elderly persons I find that they can board much more happily with a family that is not their own. As long as this mother Is of sound body and mind, her children should allow and en courage her to decide her fate. (Copyright 1958. General Features' Corp.
