Episcopalians, Compound Of Protestant-Catholic By LOUIS CASSELS United Press International Most Christians can give a quick, one-word answer when asked if they are Catholics or Protestants. Episcopalians have a one word answer too, but it usual ly calls for a lengthy explana tion. Their answer is "both." The Episcopal church is "catholic" in that it preserves the ancient Catholic creeds and sacraments and the litur gical form of worship. It main tains a three-fold ministry of bishops, priests and deacons, who, like the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox clergy, trace their line of ordination back to the apostles. . On the other hand it is a "reformed" or Protestant body in that it denies the authority of the Pope, and rejects many JACKSONVILLE ASSEMBLY OF GOD W. V. Bible study and pray er service We Give GREEN STAMPS CENTRAL REXALL DRUG Main and Central aspects of Roman Catholic doctrine and worship which it regards as contrary to the original faith and practice of the early Christian church. Like all Protestant bodies; it accepts the Bible, rather than any ecclesiastical authority, as the ultimate "testing ground" for beliefs. . Combine Both Traditions The attempt to combine both great Christian traditions in one body has led to in eviatable tensions between "high church" Episcopalians, who emphasized Catholic leanings, and "low church" Episcopalians, who are dis tinctly Protestant in orienta tion. But these tensions have been minimized in recent years by the rapid growth of a great middle group of Epis copalians who cherish both as pects of their heritage, and who welcome the opportunity to serve as a "bridge" between the divided branches of the Christian family. Their viewpoint is ex pressed by 'the noted Episco pal scholar, Dr. Chad Walsh: "If Christendom' is ever to be reunited into one great church, . that church will of necessity be one with suffi cient scope and flexibility to find room for what is best in both the Protestant and Catholic traditions. I believe the Episcopal church is a small-scale model of what such a church can be." Their commitment to the cause of Christian reunion has led Episcopalians to take a leading role, in ecumenical or ganizations such as the Na tional and World Councils of Churches. They have also moved to strengthen ties with their own . "immediate fami ly" - the worldwide Anglican communion. Common Rrayer Book The Anglican communion consists of some 40 million Christians on every continent whose self-governing national churches are, like the Episco pal Church in the United States, descended . from the parent church of England. One of their strong bonds is the fact that all use the 400-year-old "Book of Common Prayer." Anglican worship came to America with the original English colonists. The first church' was planted at James town, Va., in 1607, by a chap lain who accompanied Capt. John Smith's band. George Washington, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Patrick Henry and many other found ing fathers were Episcopali ans. With more than three' mil lion members, the Episcopal church today ranks as Am erica s sixth largest Christian body. Alexandria,' Va. Britain Stops Northwest Fruit Portland-(UPD-Great Britain has stopped entry on fruit im ports from the Northwest worth millions of dollars on objections of a chemical mold retardant widely used by the Northwest fruit packers. In a directive issued from London, British officials stopped entry of apples and winter pears treated with a spray known as stop-mold. Britain is the principal mar ket for certain small grades of fruit. The British said the chemi cal is harmful to health al though it has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug ad ministration. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and shippers and steamship companies have lodged protests with the Brit ish government. In Oregon, the Apple Grow ers association of Hood River has been hardest hit. Ship ments of Hood River pears have stopped and apple ship ments are reduced. J. A. Smith, president of the International Pacific Coast corporation, in Seattle, said the action by the British may virtually wipe out North west apple exports this year.
