Frank F. - I want to know the whole truth. Lillian F.-My husband and I have been married for four years and have two children. We could be very happy if it weren't for Frank's jealous suspicions about something that happened a lone time ago. It all started at the time we were going together was also going out with another man who had a very bad reputation in our com munity. I was really doing this to tease Frank. Then Frank made some accusations against me and I became so angry that I said yes he was right. It wasn t true and i later told him so, but he nev er really believed me. Now everytime something comes up that he can connect with this incident, Frank brings up the whole thing and makes the same old accu sations. I don't want to hear them anymore. Frank F. - I'm afraid that one reason Lillian doesn't want to hear these unpleasant things is because they hit much too close to home. I be lieved her at first when she told me she had been lying to tease me, but when I thought it over I realized that no woman would ever say a thing like that unless it was true. Lillian thinks she can pull the wool over my eyes by pre tending to be very honest and aboveboard. She tells me openly that she enjoys flirt ing with men, but that it doesn't amount to anything. How am I to take her word when she has admitted to lying once even though she claims the lie was in the other direction? I insist upon knowing the whole truth about what happened with that man. The Council: Frank appears to be the type who offers him helf up too readily as the vic tim to a tormenter like Lilli an. This woman frankly ac knowledges herself to be a tease. Men with a sense of self-preservation would avoid her, yet Frank married her after she played with his feel ings in the crudest way. Many of us are prone to look lightly on teasing. Chil dren tease one another and are often teased by adults. Pets are often teased. But this is really a playful form of cruelty. Society in general permits it as an outlet, but it takes someone who wants to get hurt to place himself in the position of getting hurt again and again. We can't offer a ready solu tion to this problem, but we would urge Lillian to look into her own conscience to find out whether her "open flirting" with men is to be condoned. If she is telling the truth when she says that "it doesn't amount to anything" it merely means she has found a way to tease other men and her own husband at the same time. If she'll sub stitute the word "hurt" or torture" for tease she'll come to understand her own ac tions more fully. We think that Frank should make up his mind to put the premarital incident behind him once and for all. The 'whole truth" won't hurt or help him anymore. He has been wounded by the incident whatever happened and if he keeps picking at the scab it will never heal. But he does have a right to object to Lilli an's present behavior and he should voice his objections firmly. Perhaps his wife will eventually grow into emo tional maturity or moral understanding.
