t Myrtle Creek Man Fined in Court Ray O'Neal Falls, 30, Myr tle Creek, was lined $25 plus $5 court costs and placed on probation for three months by District Court Judge James M. Main Thursday morning. He also was ordered by the court to retrain from drinking al coholic beverages and to not own any firearms. Falls, who was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, entered a plea of guilty in dis trict court Wednesday after noon. He was arrested by Med ford city police late Tuesday at the Richfield Truck and Auto service, 2390 North Pa cific highway, after he had pulled a loaded .32 caliber automatic from his pocket when police ordered him out of the buliding. Group Speculates . On Agriculture Head Salem-fUPD- There was spec ulation here today at the Ore gon Farm Bureau Federation convention as to who would be Oregon's new agriculture director to replace Robert J. Steward. Steward has notified Gov.-elect Mark Hatfield he intends to resign. Medford Man Heads Weed Conference La Grande - (UPD - Ray Hub bell, Medford, has been elected president of the' Ore gon Weed Conference. The group will hold its next conference at Medford some time next year. Back Stairs: Threats of Assassination By MERRIMAN SMITH UPI Correspondent Washington-PD-Back stairs at the White House: The files of the United States Secret Service bulge with information, description and photographs of men and women who have made known their desire or inten tion kill President Eisenhow er. However, there hasn't been an overt attempt on Eisenhow er's life during his six years under the protection of the federal agents. Much of the credit for such a clean record must go to the taut protective techniques of the Secret Service, itself. But the absence of truly serious assassins is due in part to the very nature of the President. Apparently, he has not en gendered the hatred or been in office during such highly emotional times, as his two im mediate predecessors. Presi dent Roosevelt and Truman. Two in Hospitals Two men are in mental hos pitals now because they wrote the President rather stern threats, then followed up their letters by obtaining firearms. Both men, in the Washington area, were the objects of rou tine checkups by S. S. agents after the first letters arrived During the course of these investigations, it developed that one man went out and bought a gun after sending his letter. He was picked up and questioned. This man insisted that he was not kidding about his intention to kill Eisenhow er because of some imagined grivenance. He was promptly committed. The second man, after writ ing his letter, was rather open about his possession of a small caliber pistol, xnis was enough for the agents and they took him into custody. He, too, show evidence of such mental illness as to re quire court proceedings. Threats by Convicts It still puzzles veteran Se cret Service men why would three tough convicts add to their troubles by writing death letters to a president? This happened in this admin istration. Andrew Tully, Washington reporter for the Scripps-How-ard newspapers, tells in his current best-seller "Treasury Agent," how former President Hoover chafed under the con stant attendance of the Secret Service men. Calvin Coolidge, the presi dent before Hoover, set all sorts of records in attempting to get away from his protect ors. Coolidge was spending a long holiday one summer "at his favorable resort, Swamp scott, Mass. He was not much of a man for most sports, but he did like to take long walks on the beach alone. Naturally, the Secret Serv ice detail assigned to the sum mer White House permitted no such solitude. The agents were perfectly willing to walk at some distance from the President, but they had to be with him. Coolidge watched their maneuvers carefully, waiting for a break. One day, when he thought his agents were carefully concentrated in the kitchen around the coffee pot, Coolidge raced out the door of his cottage and ran as hard as he could down the beach to ward the resort's leading ho tel; the New Ocean House. The agents head the door slam and took a look. When they spied the President flee ing, his coattail's flapping in the ocean breeze, they set out in pursuit. They overtook Coolidge just before he reached the beach bordering the hotel property, the agents falling into a-trot beside him without saying a word. Abruptly, the President dug his heels into the sand and stopped. He looked around at the agents, his shoulders drooped in dejection. "Well, I tried," he said gloomily and trudged back to the house. Yosemite Climb Leader Tells of El Capitan Ascent Yosemite National Park -(UPD- The leader of the first party ever to climb the sheer face of El Capitan, the 3,604 foot monolith at the entrance to Yosemite Valley, said Thursday he was "pretty close to cracking" when he got to the top." "I'm sort of wobbly after hanging in slings for 13 days," said Warren Harding, 34, of West Sacramento, "but I feel great. "I'll admit I was pretty close to cracking when I got to the top. I was pent up." Difficult Climb Harding and two compan ions reached the top of the granite cliff early Wednesday after an incredibly difficult climb. The three worked 23 Vz hours in the final push, occa sionally dangling in space by their nylon ropes. 1 Capitan's peak is 7,649 feet above sea level. It has been approached from the rear by a relatively easy sev en mile hike, but the face has never been conquered up to now. With Harding were George Whitmore, 27, Fesno, and Wayne Merry, 27, San Jose. Asked why he did it. Mer ry said: "Some people play golf, some bridge, some tiddly winks. I climb rocks." Started Nov. 1 Harding and his two com panions had been on the face since Nov. 1, but the ascent was the climax of an effort that began on Labor Day of 1957. Eight men took part in it at one time or another. The climbers made their laborious ascent by driving metal spikes into the granite for footholds and to anchor their nylon ropes.
