Helicopters also were used to land troops during exercise. All City Music Groups Planned Two "all city music groups" will start rehearsals Saturday, Nov. 15, I. A. Mirick, super visor of instrumental music in Medford schools, has an nounced. The groups, the all-Medford elementary honor band and orchestra, are now being or ganized from sixth grade stu dents. The orchestra will meet at Hedrick Junior High school and the band will meet at Mc Loughlin Junior High, Mirick said. Purpose of the groups is to give talented and hard-working students an opportunity to play more advanced music, thereby accelerating the child's musical education, he pointed out. Students will be selected for the groups on rec ommendation of the elemen tary school band or orchestra teacher and principal, Mirick said. John Drysdale, Elmer Ayres 'and Audrey Bartlett will work with orchestra students, and Bon Bartlett, Al Huntemann and Mirick will work with band students. Mirick said the groups prob ably would present one or more concerts during the school year. Close Bidding on Highway Projects Seen in Openings Muscular Dystrophy Drive Starts Here The annual drive for funds for Muscular Dystrophy start ed Nov. 1 in this area, accord ing to Mayola J. Watson, pres ident of the Jackson county chapter. Muscular Dystrophy association. The March for Muscular Dystrophy will be Wednesday evening, Nov. 19, with the Medford letter carriers assist ing other volunteer workers. Reese Alexander of the Al exander and Brown Insurance agency, Medford, will be com merce and industry chairman for this year's drive, chapter officials announced. Salem-rtlPD-Extremely close bidding marked bid openings by the State Highway Depart ment here Wednesday with three bidders within $29 of each other in bids for con struction of some highway structures. State " Highway Engineer W. C. Williams said the bids were 13.1 per cent below en gineering estimates. Bids opened will be con sidered for awards at a meet ing of the Highway Commis sion here Dec. 11. There were only four bid ders on the largest project in the letting, involving paving of 2.97 miles on the south west 11th ave.-Tigard inter change of the Baldock free way in Portland. Peter Kie wit Sons' Company, Vancou ver, Wash., was the apparent low bidder with a bid of $1, 161,017. Other apparent low bids included: Museum Has 2,289 Visitors in October Jacksonville A total of 2,289 persons visited the Jacksonville museum last month, an increase of 709 over the number visiting it in October, 1957. A previous article reported the increase as 109. The total brought to 309,- 332 the number of visitors since the museum opened on July 10, 1950. Attendance last month was 2,289, compared to 1,580 in October, 1957. Old Newspapers To Be Displayed A collection of old news papers recalling many events of recent history will be dis played at the Chin Up club hobby carnival at the Girls Community club Friday and Saturday. The show will be open from noon until 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. Included in the newspaper collection are the Dempsey Carpentier fight, Bandon fire, Oregon state capitol fire, dirigible Hindenburg explo sion, plane crash death of Wiley Post and Will Rogers, both world Wars, assassina tion of Huey Long, mimeo graphed paper from Point Barrow, Alaska, announcing the Post - Rogers crash, a pa per printed on wrapping paper, during the newsprint shortage of World War II, and other interesting editions. Also included is a Hong Kong tele phone directory. Colleen Hope dancers will provide a half-hour show Fri day at 7 p.m., to be followed by the Shadows at 8 p.m. Saturday night Mrs. George Heide will entertain at the organ and her son, Bob, will play cornet solos at 7 p.m. At 8 p.m. Mrs. C. R. Alexander's Hawaiian band will be heard. Prizes will be given both nights, club officers said.
