I would also have my lymph nodes checked in my neck, my arm pits, my groins, and my chest cavity to make sure that I didnt have Hodgkin's disease. I would get well checked to see if there were any other disease that I was coming down with. If not, I might have to conclude that my itchiness was due to my nervousness and perhaps ten sion due to overwork. I remember a woman of 40 who had a wide-spread itch that was "driving her crazy." I finally drew from her the story that she was dissatis fied with her husband and couldn't make up her mind whether or not to divorce him. I helped her to decide not to divorce him and to ac cept him as he was. A few months later, I received a very grateful letter from her saying that her itching was gone, and she was happy. Many women complain bit terly of itching of the crotch. They often have some nervous problem that they cannot solve. They should, however, go to see a physician to make sure that they haven't per haps a trichomonas (tiny or ganism) or a mold growing in the vagina. Any discharge could help to produce the itching. They also should have their blood sugar checked for an excess of sugar. Old women sometimes have senescent changes in the tissues around the vagina. changes which are hard to treat. Sometimes the tissue even has to be trimmed off by a surgeon. When I worked in the Mayo Clinic, I always checked these women first from a general medical point of view; then I called m consultation a gyne cologist, a skin specialist, and sometimes a psychiatrist. Of ten it was the psychiatrist who could do most for them, es pecially when they were a bunch of nerves, or when they had a problem at home that they could not solve by themselves. Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to diag nose by mail. .
