16 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medfora, Or., Thursday, November 13, 1958 Investigators Seek Cause of Tanker Crash Savanah, Ga. - 1TD - Air Force investigators sought to day to determine what caused a loaded KC97 Stratotanker to crash in a residential area Wednesday, killing all 11 crewmen. The big craft, attached to the 308th Air Refueling Squadron at Hunter Air Force Base here, slammed into the only parking lot at a residen tial subdivision about 10 miles southeast of here. It had just taken off on a routine training mission. It was believed that one or more of the plane's four en gines failed. The plane was burning be fore it hit, witnesses said, and it blew up in several thunder ous explosions as it ground across the lot and into two empty houses. C. E. Williams, who was working in his gar den near the scene, was burned and at last report was in fair condition at a hos pital. One Resident Burned Another resident, Charles Wilson, was burned while try ing to put out the fire which had spread to his yard. His condition also was reported as fair. One witness, Lawrence Johnson, said that "fire was coming out (of the plane) be fore it hit." An unidentified telephone lineman said the plane barely missed the pole on which he was working, and that an ob ject that fell from the plane almost hit him. Wreckage was scattered over about five blocks, and one of the homes it struck was demolished. Identify Dead Lt. George Muelich, infor mation officer at Hunter, said the Stratotankers normally carry a crew of six, but that five observers were aboard on this flight The dead men were identi fied as Lt. Harold G. Laffen, 26, aircraft commander, of New York City; Lt. Freddie Levine, 25, navigator, Charles ton, S. C; M. Sgt. Warren E. Martin, 29, flight engineer, Yakima, Wash.; A-lc Malcolm Rogers, 22, Prattville, Ala.; M. Sgt. Curtis W. King, 37, Hatfield Confers Vith Californians Los Angeles 0.TD Gov.-i elect Mark Hatfield of Ore- gon conferred with southern ' California Republican leaders i Wednesday at an informal luncheon at the California club. The center at Redlands is a retreat house operated by the Presbyterian church. In his talk, Hatfield dwelt on the necessity for "true religious faith." He said any nation should pride itself "on the spiritual sinews of its people rather than on ma terial wealth " or military strength."
