NO OTHER VODKA IN THE WORLD LIKE IT f swing 'Tt i 1 o VODK& - Oregon Products Build Oregon's Economy rsr fTTTi 22 1 Plywood Study To Result in More Jobs in Oregon Lebanon- it'PI -Two Oregon plywood firms announced Wednesday the results of a $46,000 study which may mean more jobs and income to the people of Oregon through greater use of logs formerly left in the woods. The study consists" of a re port evaluating the strength and performance of Douglas fir plywood with white-pocket-infected veneers in in terior plys. Officials of Western Veneer and Plywood Co., of Lebanon and Plywood Products Corp., of Corvallis said they expect the move to help resolve the controversy in the plywood in dustry over proposed changes in playwood grading stand ards. Reasonable Basis Many plywood companies which do not have the service of a quality control agency will be able to have their products certified on a reason able basis. Company officials said that now the white-speck-infected logs will be able to be re covered and used as market able material. The study will be made available to other industry firms through the Timber En gineering Co., of Washington. D. C, research organization of the forest industries. BRITISH STEEL DOWN London -IUPD- British steel production is continuing to drop, the Iron and Steel board reported today. Air Service Planned In Northern Calif. Yreka, Calif. - The Siski you county board of supervis ors this week approved a re quest from Northern Skyways Inc., for space to construct hangar facilities at the county airport at Hontague. Michael T. Hennessy, at torney and secretary for the corporation, said maintenance and storage hangars are plan ned immediately, and that other hangars will be con structed later. Hennessy indicated that Ft. Jones, Dunsmuir, Mt. Shasta, and Happy Camp may be in cluded in daily flights along with Montague. He said he felt the ending of service at Montague by Pacific Airways, Inc., has worked a hardship on residents of northern Cali fornia. O. J. LeBaron of Yreka, president of the corporation which was formed recently, said there is a need for con tact with Redding to accqm mcdate persons traveling to the Mt. Shasta Ski bowl. The new corporation lso would restore air mail service to the area, he noted. LeBaron said the firm plans to start construction immed iately, and expressed hope the scheduled flights may begin within sc to eight months. Medford SP 3-5348 Moon Volcano Photographed Moscow - (UPI - Soviet as tronomer Nikolai Kozyrev recently photographed a vol cano erupting on the moon, the official Soviet Tass news agency said Wednesday night. Kozyrev took the photo graph at about 4 a.m. Mos cow time Nov. 3 with the 50 inch reflector of the Crimea Astrophysical L a b o r a tory, Tass said. Kozyrev described the eruption as a reddish glow that grew in intensity after two hours. "There was every reason to believe that it was a nor mal delevopment of a vol canic process on the surface of the moon," he said. Alexander Mikhailov, chairman of the astronomical council of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, said spectograms left no doubt that Kozyrev had seen a volcano. "We can now regard as entirely wrong the view on the . origin of the main fea tures of the lunar landscape as -being due to the impact of meteorites," he said. "This volcanic eruption shows that the processes re sponsible for the formation of the surface relief apply both to the earth and the moon-." Dick Cottingham Gets Portland Job R. S. (Dick Cottingham, claims representative in the Medford district office of the Social Security administration for the past two years, has been promoted and trans ferred to the Portland district office, W. V. Nusbaum, district manager, has announced. Cottingham will work as a field representative out of the Portland office, and will re port to that office Monday, Nov. 17. Mann's To Hold Party for Employees The annual Mann's Depart ment store party, given by the firm's president, John P. Mof fat, will be held at the Rogue Valley Country club tonight. The party is in observance of Mann's 48th anniversary. During the anniversary month October, two teams of em ployees were organized. The team which made the smaller sales increase during the month is in charge of party ar rangements and entertain ment. R. E. Culbertson is in charge of music. Awards will be presented to top salespeo ple for October as well as the department head who had the greatest increase in sales. Nixon Speaks During Sleep Miami - (CPD - Vice Presi dent Richard M. Nixon, a hard-hitting political cam paigner when awake, makes non-political speeches in his sleep, a dentist reported to day. Nixon was given a drug called "nerval," described as a form of so-called "truth serum," Wednesday as an estehetic for the extraction of an infected wisdom tooth. The two dentists in atten dance reported that Nixon made a speech after the ex traction, while the anesthetic was wearing off. They said he told the au dience the two dentists and three nurses about the American way of life, discuss ed a variety of general topics and praised his wife for bravery in Venezuela, where Nixon was attacked by a stone-throwing mob earlier this year. The dentists said he made no partisan political remarks. After the speech, they said, he asked when they planned to remove the tooth. The den tists said they had to show him the extracted tooth to prove the job had already been done. Kelso Youth Object Of Extensive Hunt Kelso, Wash - (UPD -A search party today continued looking for Leon Raglin, 18, Kelso, who has been missing since Tuesday morning. Lonny Rodgers and Leland Freund, both 17 of Kelso, told sheriffs officers that they lost contact with Raglin while on a hunting trip in the Big Bull mountain area in Weyerhaeu ser Timber Company woods. State patrolmen, loggers, members of the Jeep club and the . Kelso Police Auxiliary have all joined in the search. Dan Steiner, chief deputy in charge of the search, said that it must be assumed that Raglin is hurt since he has not found his way to a road be cause he is familiar with the country. Oxygen Leak Delays Testing of Atlas Cape Canaveral-IUPB-Liquid oxygen poured intermittently for several hours from an in tencontinental Atlas missile early today, but a scheduled 3,100-mile flight finally was postponed. The Air Force did not ex plain why it "scrubbed" the 80-foot missile which would be the 14th fired since flight testing began in June of 1957. It was the first Atlas firing attempt since Sept. 18, when a try at sending' the 100-ton missile the full 6,325-mile in tercontinental distance ended in an explosion only 80 sec onds after launching. - The sea urchin walks the tip of its teeth. - on Seal Hunting Contract Signed Portland -(UPD- The Oregon Fish Commission said today it has signed a contract with a Springfield man to hunt seals on the Columbia river. The Commission said Wil liam F. Puustinen would start work Feb. 1 and would con tinue on the contract through next September. He will be paid $40 a day.
